FROM THE EDITOR

FROM THE ARCHIVES Celebrating AH&L’s 40th anniversary year

wheels up WHEN YOU ENVISION YOUR dream vacation, where do you go? Personally, I’m on a boat on the coast of Italy, sun kissing my skin, the Mediterranean Sea gently rocking me into a brief afternoon snooze after I spent the morning wandering in and out of the local boutiques. I’m on my second Aperol spritz of the day, but I’ve probably earned it thanks to the hike it takes to get from my luxurious hotel with the best view of the tiny coastal city I’m staying in. We all have one—a bucket-list destination that keeps our daydreams occupied. Perhaps yours is trying sushi in Japan, or getting up close and personal to the majestic wildlife in Africa. Maybe it’s hiking Angels Landing in Zion National Park, or it could even be closer to home, spending an afternoon in the garden indulging in your own personal oasis. This month, we travel to three of Atlanta’s second-home markets

Designer Courtney Giles Decker serves a modern take on mountain living inside an elegant Cashiers, North Carolina retreat. See more at “Fresh Perspective” on atlantahomesmag.com

where the sun shines bright and the air breathes easy. Along 30A, a standout design-build team led by designer Melanie Turner gives “coastal chic” a whole new definition in AH&L’s latest showhouse concept (page 62). Nearby, designer Beth Webb and architect Tim Adams find a healthy balance between classic and contemporary style in a Seaside, Florida, abode (page 86). Up north, designer AnnaWooten Loggins fashions a cozy and collected second home in the mountains of Cashiers, North Carolina (page 106). For those planning their upcoming travel, we share three destinations the way across the pond (page 121). And should you be indulging in a staycation this summer, we hope as you sit down with this issue that you’ll feel a sense of tranquility with every turn of the page.

ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: Your tabletop exudes summertime elegance. What was the inspiration behind the design? NINA LONG: We lean toward classic design, and with this being outdoors, it needed to feel less formal. We like blueand-white porcelain—there’s a lot of it in the house—so we thought it would be fun to incorporate that. That was our starting point, and then we thought it would be pretty to do a palette with touches of green, blues, creams and a little bit of purple. Nature is always an inspiration and we didn’t want to compete with the lush landscape. AH&L: Having multiple hangout spots for guests is both

charming and efficient. Tell us more about your various entertaining zones. DON EASTERLING: What’s great about the outdoor area is how well it all flows—whether it’s six people or 60. The best part is you can open the doors and seamlessly go from the keeping room and kitchen area to the porch, and from the open-air porch you feel connected to the pool area below, then around the pool area you have the pavilion. There’s a lot of spaces for movement with either a larger group or when relaxing in a more intimate setting. AH&L: Your tabletop is a mix of fun prints in a classic color scheme. their own summer tabletops? DE: Using various textures, like woven placemats, and colors and patterns on the textiles will definitely add depth and interest. Fresh florals are a must and elevate any tabletop; take cues from what’s seasonal and it will always look right. Colored or etched glassware is a favorite of ours as well. AH&L: Summers in Georgia are a scorcher. What items—sips or bites—are on your party menu to keep guests feeling cool? NL: Always Don’s famous margaritas! You don’t want anything too heavy when it’s super hot outside. Small, easy bites like homemade guacamole and chips with grilled corn salsa, crudités, prosciutto and melon skewers, mini pulledpork sliders, antipasto bites with olives, mozzarella and tomato. And it’s not the South unless some pimento cheese is thrown in there somewhere too! AH&L: You both have worked together for years, creating elegant interiors with a playful twist on tradition. Tell us more about your dynamic and why your design partnership works so well? NL: From the start, our chemistry was really great. It’s hard to explain and definitely a unique and special relationship. We get along so well and really respect and admire each other so much. Also, good communication, honesty and hard work has been a foundation for us, and the rest comes naturally. It’s funny, after over 15 years, we could spend 10 hours a day together and still call each other as soon as 16

Don’s Famous Margarita “This margarita recipe tastes clean and expensive, when in fact, it’s a super simple take on a classic margarita. It’s actually a bit of a joke because we serve it in fancy English-etched lowball glasses, but it’s so easy and only a few ingredients.” (serves 4) 1 cup Blanco Tequila of your choice 2 cups frozen limeade 1 lime Mint sprigs Combine ingredients in a pretty pitcher and serve over good crushed ice, salted rim optional. Garnish each glass with a lime wedge or mint sprig. Enjoy!

we get in our own cars to discuss what just went on! AH&L: What is your number one piece of advice for making a summer gathering memorable for your guests? DE: Keep the drinks flowing! Hydration

is key, right? Also, a really upbeat, fun playlist. There are hidden speakers all around the pool and on the porches at my house, so no matter where you are, you can hear the music. Those things are really all you need! mathewsfurniture.com 17

luxury environment The developer behind the expanding Star Metals District, Coral Gables-based ALLEN MORRIS COMPANY, is embarking on the third phase of the West Midtown development—a 21-story luxury rental apartment building known as STELLA AT STAR METALS. Joining the district’s already completed 15-story Star Metals Offices, which is purported to be the tallest office building in West Midtown, and the residential building Sentral West Midtown at Star Metals, Stella will be comprised of 327 studios and one- and two-bedroom luxury apartments. Breaking ground this year and expected to open in 2025, Stella at Star Metals is also slated to have 25,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, including Michelin26

awarded restaurants. Other high-end amenities will include a rooftop lounge, a movie theater and an unobstructed skyline view. What will likely turn heads is Stella’s unique appearance, which is the work of Miami-based OPPENHEIM ARCHITECTURE, the design architect for all Star Metal buildings. According to the firm’s founding principal, CHAD OPPENHEIM, Stella’s design reflects the firm’s signature “spirit of place” philosophy. “We wanted to capture the neighborhood’s distinct identity and honor its history,” an approach that inspired the building’s signature copper-like banding, which is intended to mimic the old railroad tracks and warehouses that once populated the area. Oppenheim is equally proud of the design’s prominent green architectural element, a series of rolling green roofs. “Although it’s a mixed-use building in a major city, ensuring that we preserved the local environment was always at the forefront. We feel that our efforts to bring a high level of landscape to our project will set a precedent for future developments in the area.”

An annual summer tradition, the 26th CASHIERS DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE opens this month in a mountain-style house designed and built by Jim Robinson of Design South Builders. Located at Chimney Top at High Hampton, the Showhouse runs August 25 to September 2.

Having introduced its first luxury private travel terminal at Los Angeles’ LAX airport in 2017, PS (formerly The Private Suite) has set its sights on catering to those traveling to, from and through Atlanta. With its second location scheduled to open at Hartsfield-Jackson airport this month, the company’s CEO, AMINA BELOUIZDAD PORTER, says that it made sense to bring the concept to Atlanta. “With Hartsfield-Jackson Airport being the nation’s busiest airport, Atlanta was the natural next step in our expansion plan. A lot of our existing

members already consistently travel to Atlanta for work, leisure or as a connection point.” Accessible to fee-paying members, the PS ATL outpost—a luxurious retreat where travelers can relax in the facility’s Salon lounge or in private suites—will be located adjacent to Signature’s private aviation terminal, a particularly advantageous location for those members traveling by private aircraft. But even for those flying commercial, accessing the PS ATL terminal will be made easy, thanks to chauffeured transportation to and from the aircraft door. Once inside the terminal, PS members can avail themselves of a long list of amenities, including an extensive menu of cocktails and chef-prepared meals, massages, manicures and more. PS ATL will also provide private TSA screening, customs and immigration services, meaning members can skip long lines inside the airport, particularly during peak travel times.

2024 KITCHEN of the YEAR CONTEST Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham MOST PEOPLE TREAT SECOND homes as opportunities to get away and enjoy a landscape that is entirely different from that of their primary homes. Some prefer a beach retreat, perhaps one located in a laid-back beach community or, as is trending of late, a tony resort town such as Palm Beach, where half of Atlanta seems to be spending its time these days. Others like the cool air and rusticity of being in the mountains. Then there are some of us—actually, it might only be a few of us—who don’t really care where the second home is located. It’s the opportunity to indulge in more decorating that is of primary importance to us. You see, although I live in a decent-size condo, it’s already fully decorated. I like my choices in color, fabrics and furnishings, so decoratingwise, there is very little left to do. And yet, there are so many different design styles that I would love to live with. I sometimes dream of having an ultracontemporary residence furnished with very little other than early American antiques. On the other hand, there is that Dorothy Draper, 1940s film-set style of decorating that I’m also drawn to. How much fun would that be? So, unless I completely make over my condo, which I’m not prepared to do, I have no other way of enjoying an entirely new decorating project than to buy or rent a second home elsewhere. And yet, the very last thing I want to do at the end of a long week is to get into the car and drive to some rest and relaxation, even if it is only an hour or two away. My solution? I’m thinking of getting a second home down the street from where I currently live. It sounds crazy, I know, but it means that whenever I’m hankering for Dorothy Draper stripes and plaster light fixtures, or possibly those early American antiques that I’m always talking about, all I have to do is walk a block up the street. Now that’s what I call relaxing!

Persian-Mediterranean restaurant YALDA introduces Atlantans to a new genre of family fare in Sandy Springs Written by EVAN EDWARDS Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN

THE IRANIAN WINTER solstice celebration, Yalda Night, serves as the eponym for chef Ashkan Famili’s newest restaurant, Yalda, located in Sandy Springs. After working under the expertise of renowned Atlanta chef Pano Karatassos, Famili went on to develop his own concepts in Buckhead, Marietta and Memphis, Tennessee. Yalda, however, is a true testament of his love for family and food. “The idea for Yalda sparked from celebrating time with loved ones, sharing food, reading poetry and reminiscing,” says Famili, who opened the restaurant with longtime friend and business partner Farhan Kheraj. “We were inspired to create a setting for our guests 30

to make memories with their loved ones.” As guests enter through the large wooden door, bright hues in both the interiors and dishes make a grand appearance. Staying loyal to the restaurant’s roots, dishes are made to share and prepared with traditional Persian techniques. “The dishes on our menu represent true Persian food that is made fresh daily with the highest quality of local ingredients,” says Famili. “Chef Raymon Beltran has been a key player in putting a great culinary team together.” Begin your meal with a selection of spreads like the Kashk Bademjoon spread (fried eggplant, cream of whey, crispy onions, garlic and mint) served with fresh naan and pair it with a small dish or mezze. The menu also boasts savory entrées like a salmon kabob, veggie stew and the lamb shank. To sip, pair the fare with one of Yalda’s vivid cocktails or choose from their extensive wine list. Designed in partnership with Cy Bickers from Restaurants Consulting Group, the interior design of Yalda employs a mix of colors and patterns that enhance the entire meal experience. ATLANTA INTERIOR DESIGNER Melanie Turner is no stranger to decorator showhouses. In fact, she thinks she has participated in no less than 12 over the years. The experience is often a win-win for the participating designers, who get to flex their design chops, as well the visitors who come to be inspired and the local charities that benefit from a portion of the proceeds. Along with developer Stan Benecki, builder Chase Green and residential designer Lew Oliver, Turner was the design visionary behind Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ latest concept—the 30A Showhouse—in Florida’s Panhandle region. As a longtime gathering spot for Atlantans to retreat to second homes along the Gulf Coast, “30A,” of course, is a reference to the storied highway that links a number of coastal communities in the area, including Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, Seaside, Watercolor and Inlet Beach, home to this year’s showhouse. 65

For Turner, the project presented an opportunity to call upon some familiar decorating ideas, yet give them a twist. As with many homes near the beach, blueand-white schemes are commonplace— and why not? After all, with the emeraldand-cerulean sea and ebullient sky surrounding you, the colors seem to be a natural fit to bring indoors. Turner, however, wanted to use blue to connect all of the inside spaces, but didn’t want the scheme to be just another expected pairing of the two colors. “Even though the house started out with blue as the primary color, it became a happy house with the incorporation of the yellow,” says Turner of the dynamic hue she added to the mix. “It has a big impact.” Although the yellow is formidable, it never overpowers or dominates; Turner knows when to dial it up (in more intimate spaces), and when to dial it down (in larger, open spaces where it could overwhelm). Also important to the designer was

bringing in organic forms and natural materials—such as plaster walls—to ground the rooms and give them a contemporary verve. They work in tandem with the exterior facade that subtly incorporates Art Deco influences, similar to the clean-lined structures found in Miami’s South Beach. “We took a lot of inspiration from Old Florida motifs,” says Turner, “such as lemons, flamingos and palms.” But in her hands, the forms become of-the-moment, such as wallpaper patterns with an exaggerated scale, or colorful fabrics with unexpected

applications—no coastal clichés here. Beyond the home’s design inspiration, practical considerations were at the forefront of Turner’s plan. For decades, homes in the Panhandle area near the Gulf have been popular spots for large family gatherings, particularly at the peak of summer. “When you have multigenerational families come and stay,” says Turner, “or multiple families come and stay, people all want to gather in one room at some point. Whereas some are just thinking about how many people the beds can sleep, I’m very conscious of how 71

many people you can sit for dinner and how many people can sit in the living room at once.” Hence, Turner devised flexible seating areas in the living and dining areas— including a serpentine sofa and curvaceous dining banquette—that work well for large groups, yet also retain a scale of intimacy if there’s only one or two people at home.

Indoors or out, the ethos of the showhouse project was to design something that would respect and reflect the special place where the house resides, as well as be representative of the family who might call it home. “They can come down here and enjoy this vision of beauty,” says Turner. “The water and the sand are like no place else on Earth.” See Resources, Back of Book

AFTER VISITING SEASIDE, FLORIDA, for decades, a Buckhead couple with three adult children purchased one of the last empty oceanfront lots on 30A. They asked architect Tim Adams and interior designer Beth Webb to create a relaxed yet refined gathering place for family and friends. “He’s more contemporary in style and she’s more conservative,” says Adams of the homeowners. “We found the balance between the two.” An arched doorway opens to the front foyer, which Adams adorned with the sort of classically inspired millwork that flows throughout the interior. windows that frame the ocean vistas. “On a piece of property like that, you wonder how you’ll compete with the view, the colors and the changing light,” he says. “Our goal was to frame the view and add to it as best we can.” Involved from the onset, Webb collaborated closely with Adams on the plans, tweaking key details to better suit the overall design. They agreed, for example, to punctuate the dining room’s custom built-in white cabinetry by Kingdom Woodworks with black steel-framed

glass cabinets. “It’s very graphic, and that tension creates interest,” says Webb. “It’s always about the juxtaposition— light against dark, the smooth against the rough.” An antique chest with a scalloped front, she points out, adds a touch of history to the front foyer, where she incorporated a marble tile floor with a wood inlay that coexists easily with the bespoke black metal and brass stairway railing that Adams says “pulls your eye up into the space.” 93

And a stone console table creates a sense of separation between the living and dining areas, which are rendered in a neutral palette enlivened with texture, pattern and artwork. “[The wife] wanted the focus to be on the water, the sand and the sky,” says Webb. “She’s quiet in a beautiful way, and the house reflects that.” In contrast to the light and airy palette in the main living areas and guest suites, the husband’s study is painted in a moody dark blue. And the upper-level family room is clad with river reclaimed cypress with a bluish hue that is echoed in the custom billiard table’s lapis felted rack and the bar

countertop, complete with a waterfall edge on one side. “It’s such a stunning piece,” says Adams. As is the dramatic catwalk that spans the lofty space to a patio with a bird’s-eye view of the ocean. At the culmination of the nearly four-year-long project, Webb and her crew worked with the house manager to get the house ready for the big reveal, placing furniture, hanging drapery and even completely organizing their kitchen and bathrooms. Then, “It’s showtime,” says Webb. “The wife cried happy tears, and that’s always what we want the end result to be.” See Resources, Back of Book

ON A LEISURELY DRIVE FROM Atlanta to Cashiers, North Carolina, a lot can happen— specifically a change in elevation. The city’s skyline minimizes, the approaching Blue Ridge mountains grow larger, and for vacationers headed that way, heart rates slow and relaxation begins. As was true for an Atlanta couple who decided to make this favorite mountain destination a true second home, seeking out a place that would be large enough for family and entertaining. They found it in a four-bedroom, two-story house built in a community that enjoys a championship Tom

Fazio golf course, mesmerizing vistas of three distinctive mountain peaks and generous forested lots brimming with rhododendron, mountain laurel and fern. “It’s tucked away in a super private location,” says interior designer Anna-Wooten Loggins, owner and lead designer of A. Wooten Interiors. “You feel all alone in the woods and it’s very serene.” To bring that feeling of tranquility inside, Loggins, a North Carolina native who had designed for these clients before, worked with Stewart Construction on a renovation refresh. “We didn’t

add square footage,” says Loggins, “we just updated what was there.” They replaced the front door with a custom glass-paneled door to usher in more sunlight, while the pass-through from the great room to the narrow kitchen was opened up and framed with reclaimed beams. Hardwood floors were restained in dark walnut, and the baths and kitchen were improved with new fixtures and finishes. Loggins painted the shiplap walls Dove Wing by Benjamin Moore—a favorite neutral that would serve as a backdrop to the new softer color palette. “When my clients purchased the home, it was filled with red fabrics,” says Loggins. “We decided to rid the house of red and use calming colors found in nature—hence the brown, green and hints of blue.” But, because the house was sold furnished, the owners asked her to keep any items that would translate well to the elevated cottage style. Loggins tallied 111

up the pieces that she could reuse or upcycle, rounding them out with upholstery, antiques, botanical print fabrics and artwork. “We mixed and matched the old pieces with new items to freshen things up,” says Loggins. In the dining room, for example, Loggins repurposed a console, covering it in a tailored skirt. “The old console wasn’t in keeping with the new look, but its size, especially the height and width, was perfect for the space,” she says. In the entry hall, Loggins embraced another item—a rustic, North Carolina-made twig table and topped it with the horn and bone Pierson mirror. Elsewhere, she had beds and chests painted, and added white porcelain knobs to give more interest to dressers and bedside tables. Now, when Loggins’ clients head out of the city, they know a more permanent place awaits them. As the mountains come into view, they can roll down the windows, enjoy the 10-degree drop in temperature and just breathe. See Resources, Back of Book.

Montana’s adults-only ranch-resort THE GREEN O blends serenity with adrenaline Written by ELIZABETH RALLS

The resort overlooks 10 miles of the legendary Blackfoot River, offering unlimited outdoor adventures, from rappelling down this cliff memorialized by Lewis and Clark to fly-fishing (below left).

CAN A NATURAL PLAYGROUND and built-in sanctuary coexist among the stillness of Montana’s majestic mountains and lush forests? The answer is yes—if you’re fortunate enough to be one of 24 guests staying at The Green O, The Resort at Paws Up’s new adults-only hideaway. The resort-within-a-resort, nestled into the densely timbered southern edge of the 37,000-acre Paws Up, is home to just 12 ultramodern “Haus” accommodations—each of which is designed for two and blends seamlessly into the luxury ranch’s largely untouched wilderness. Floor-to-ceiling windows, double-sided fireplaces, generous decks with hammock chairs, and indoor and outdoor tubs peering directly out to the big Montana sky maximize that life-inthe-woods feeling. The Green O—a play on the name of the town where Paws Up is located and its founder, Paul Greenough, who would brand his sheep with a green “o”—opened in 2021 and has gained notoriety for both its treehouse-like accommodations and Michelin star-worthy restaurant, Social Haus. Feel like you’re floating in the clouds—from 23 feet in the air—from The Green O’s two-story Tree Haus as you soak in 122

the views of the Garnet Mountain Range. At Round Haus, curved walls in this meandering single-story residence offer 180-degree window views, immersing couples in the midst of the forest with roaming white-tailed deer as next of kin. The third accommodation style, Green Haus, features pitched ceilings, a glass-encased living room and a skylight above the bed for stargazing to continue the sense of wonder long after the sun has fallen. While seclusion at The Green O is a given, thrill-seeking adventures beckon from beyond this working cattle ranch and its picturesque backdrop of ponderosa pines. Explore more than 100 miles of trails through hikes, climbs, equestrian experiences, ATVs or electric mountain bikes. Experience fly-fishing, and hook brown, cutthroat or rainbow trout on the resort’s neighboring 10 miles of the snow- and

spring-fed Blackfoot River. Wintertime excursions include dogsledding, snowmobiling or snowshoeing. The Green O’s luxe gathering spot, Social Haus, provides all-inclusive access to chef Brandon Cunningham’s delightfully original but individually probing dishes. Designed in the round, the Social Haus dining room features a circular fireplace surrounded by banquette seating, but the real theater happens in the kitchen, where Cunningham and his team craft elaborate, eight-course dinners that are more akin to a nightly performance thanks to artful plating and surprising flourishes like stones pulled from the Blackfoot River to sear your Wagyu beef, or honeycomb drips and floral garnishes plucked fresh from the property. An authentic blend of the rustic and luxe, the natural and the intentional, this is one resort where living and loving the land is one and the same. thegreeno.com

The AmaMagna is twice the width of traditional European river ships, offering cruise guests plenty of space and comfort.

FAIRYTALE VOYAGE

In the South, the holidays can’t come soon enough—plan now for a magical Christmas market river cruise along Europe’s treasured DANUBE RIVER Written by ANGELA CARAWAY-CARLTON ANGELIC VOICES HERALDING the joy of the holiday season waft through the air, mingling with the aromatic smells of roasting chestnuts and mulling spices. Christmas regalia drapes every landscape high and low, as crowds wander the rows of stalls trimmed with ornaments and handmade trinkets. It’s all part of the magic that you’ll experience on a Christmas market river cruise in Europe. Last December, my family boarded AmaWaterways’ flagship AmaMagna—the widest river boat in Europe with some of the largest staterooms on the river—to be whisked away on a seasonal cruise to fabled cities that pepper Europe’s treasured Danube river. With every inch of the luxury boat decked out

in festive finery, it was easy to sink into holiday bliss. Each day during the seven-night cruise that weaved through Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany, we joined everything from cushy bus tours to leisurely walks and vigorous hiking tours (which are all included for guests) that sprinkle in a mix of treasured Christmas markets with other incredible sights. In Budapest, we breathlessly climbed the steep stairs of Fisherman’s Bastion—renowned for its ornate turrets and spires that resemble a fairytale castle—to soak up panoramic views from its incredible terraces. We perused the popular St. Stephen’s Basilica market that dazzled with twinkling lights, as families swarmed the skating rink encircling a giant Christmas tree.

Another day, we followed our guide through the pristine streets of Vienna, digging into its classical music legacy and gawking at its rich architecture and grand buildings like Schönbrunn Palace, and then broke off on our own to indulge in the city’s famous dessert, a Sachertorte (chocolate cake). At night, we were awed by Vienna’s famous Christkindlmarkt on the Rathausplatz that’s filled with over-the-top holiday surprises, and then soaked up a classical music concert. We zipped off on a daylong bus tour to Mozart’s birthplace of Salzburg, perusing one of the most beautiful and oldest Advent markets, and made stops at movie locations featured in The Sound of Music. With a final stop in Vilshofen, Germany, we shopped a floating Christmas market to pick up last-minute gifts, then wandered the storybook village with a stein in hand. While we joined every tour offered, those who choose to stay onboard the AmaMagna can escape to the spa, take daily fitness classes or tuck away in the serene library to read by the faux fireplace. Our zealous cruise manager injected holiday magic into nightly programming, from regaling us with the holiday traditions of each destination, to decorating Christmas trees and singing carols. Elegant dinners at four different restaurants offered the chance to sample the authentic foods of our ports, and after listening to the live music in the bar, we’d slip into our comfy beds dreaming of the day’s fantastical sights. amawaterways.com

HISTORY REDEFINED

Whether it’s the historic charm or booming cultural and culinary scene, there’s a reason people are flocking to CHARLESTON Written by LAUREN IVERSON

DEFINED BY ITS PROTECTED historic homes, cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and ethereal charm, visiting Charleston feels like entering a time warp, granting the luxuries of modern-day living in the setting of a period piece. Perhaps it’s the city’s focus on cultural preservation, often referred to as the “living museum,” that continues to draw visitors from near and far, or maybe it’s the bustling culinary scene and array of outdoor activity that entices. No matter the reason, Charleston has earned its spot at the top of our travel list. While there is no shortage of places to stay, The Mills House Hotel, located on the corner of Queen and Meeting Streets in the heart of Charleston’s historic downtown, is an iconic landmark with a storied history. Originally established in 1853 by local grain merchant Otis Mills before it was reconstructed in the late 1960s, today, the 218-room hotel—now part of the Curio Collection by Hilton—is fresh off of a multimillion-dollar renovation that solidifies its significance to the city.

And thanks to the hotel’s central location, exciting adventure awaits in every direction. Head to the Charleston City Market to pick up local goods or walk to King Street for a vibrant day of shopping. Houseloving travelers will keep their heads on a swivel while perusing the mansions near Battery Park, and don’t forget to stop at the Nathaniel Russell House on your way back to the hotel to get an inside look at how the high class lived in the 1800s. If you have a couple of hours to spare, Captain Jim runs a tight ship on the Secret Strolls Walking Tour, where he guides guests through Charleston’s tucked-away alleyways and secret gardens while sharing historic knowledge you won’t find in the textbooks. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, culinary excellence abounds throughout the city. my must-haves BEHIND THE SCENES

Designer AMBER GUYTON of Blessed Little Bungalow shares a few of her favorite things Produced by CLINTON SMITH

in full bloom

“Hydrangeas are my favorite flower. They grew around my grandparents’ house that I lived next door to growing up in South Carolina. A bouquet of them in hues of blue, white or pink always makes me smile.”

self-care

“I love the Buffy body butter bar by Lush to moisturize at the conclusion of every shower. I follow that with the brown sugar Body Butter by Kate Lynn & Adwoa. A few years ago, I gifted a jar to all of my clients during the holidays.” Pictured: Buffy body butter; lushusa.com, katelynnandadwoa.com

page-turners

“I’m currently reading A Renaissance of Our Own: A Memoir & Manifesto on Reimagining by Rachel E. Cargle, and Why Am I Like This?: How to Break Cycles, Heal from Trauma, and Restore Your Faith by Kobe Campbell.”

map quest “Traveling is a passion of mine. After visiting

about 30 countries, my favorite destinations so far are Cinque Terre, Italy, and Maasai Mara, Kenya.”

preferred palette “I’m a jewel tone and moody color

kind of girl. My current favorites are Sherwin-Williams’ Carnelian and Cascades.” Pictured: Cascades; sherwin-williams.com

in the air

“I’ve always been obsessed with the Capri Blue Volcano candle from Anthropologie. Its freshness and fruitiness never gets old. I also love Thieves essential oil by Young Living in my diffuser.” Pictured: Capri Blue Volcano candle; anthropologie. com, youngliving.com

an eye for inspiration

“I visit ZuCot Gallery in Castleberry Hill to look for pieces for client projects and to get inspired. I am also a member of the High Museum of Art. Long walks through there and down the Atlanta BeltLine make me happy. Living in the city, all of these attractions are within a few miles or minutes.” Pictured: The High Museum of Art; high.org, zucotgallery.com, beltline.org

in good taste

“My favorite local restaurant is Papi’s Cuban Grill on Ponce de Leon. I’ve been eating the same meal there for 14 years: jerk chicken breast with yellow rice, black beans, salad, extra plantains and a fresh loaf of tostada bread. The servings are large enough for you to eat it for lunch and dinner, and you get all of this for about 12 bucks!” papisgrill.com

Adair Park neighborhood. I love its history and the quaintness of my neighborhood, as well as its close proximity to everything. I’m looking forward to attending our annual Porches & Pies Festival this fall.” adairpark.com, porchesandpies.com
