WELCOME

FROM THE EDITOR

Editor’s Eye What I’m loving this month

sunny side up YELLOW HAD ALWAYS been one of my favorite colors. It

brought sunshine to any of my dreary days, and if I focused hard enough, I could almost trick my brain into feeling a radiating warmth all around. Though, when I moved to Atlanta, this once-happy hue became associated with something much more threatening: allergy season. Those of you who live in the South know what I’m talking about: the layer of pollen that covers everything in the city at this time of year, from cars to sidewalks, furniture, and—if you let them bask in the breezy afternoon sun long enough—likely pets too. Now, I’ve battled my fair share of pollen-related problems, though when

it’s 70-degrees and sunny in Atlanta and our neighborhoods are starting to bloom, nothing will stop me from stepping outside to breathe in the fresh spring air—not even the yellow dusting that comes with it. Our March issue leans into this seasonal excitement with homes that celebrate the great outdoors. With no detail spared, Jessica Bradley Interiors and Frank G Neely Design Associates seamlessly blend indoors and out in a Buckhead home that seriously wows (page 74), and a talented team of professionals craft a grandiose estate in Tuxedo Park, matching the grace of its now-restored historic garden (page 94). Designer Doug Weiss invites us inside his personality-filled personal home (page 112), and we reveal the Also inside are two exciting events to mark on your calendar: AH&L’s Tour of Kitchens March 16–17 and the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction March 21–23. We hope to see you there!

Though originally beginning as an addition to the main home, it didn’t take long for architect Amanda Orr, landscape architect Missy Madden, interior designer Alissa Portman, and builder David Childers to realize this sprawling property’s potential. With an acre of open green space in the backyard, the design-build team created the ultimate oasis with several entertaining zones for the young family with three active children. A new pool house is a relaxing retreat, offering a shady respite from the otherwise sunny open yard and serving as a multiuse space for child’s play, alfresco dining, and pool storage. Orr mimicked the materials of the main house to form a connection between the two structures, but because of its location to the side of the home, the pool house is a site still to be discovered by guests. “In large estate properties, having the pool as a destination and allowing only glimpses of the space encourages you to be drawn through the outdoor spaces at a slower pace,” says Madden. “The mystery allows the area to form its own identity—linked to the home, but also able to stand on its own.” The large lawn is both tailored and architectural, yet fun and functional, says Madden. Hornbeam trees and holly were used to enforce structure and help define the landscape’s various areas, while the green hedging gave the perennials and flowering shrubs an elegant and textured backdrop. And the finishing touch? Says Madden, “Every good Southern garden needs a boxwood—or 10.”

STYLE NEWS

Set on the outskirts of the city on an expansive wooded lot, this Buckhead home—and its dramatic city views— are a rarity in Atlanta. “Buckhead is a heavily forested neighborhood with lush mature trees providing a high level of privacy from neighbors, giving the feel of living in a rural setting, rather than in the midst of the big city,” says builder Jon Berndsen, who collaborated with architect Stan Dixon, landscape architect John Howard, and interior designer Teri Duffy. “This home is perched high on a south-facing ridge that provides a unique, unobstructed view of the entire Downtown skyline.” In the backyard, a sculptural lap pool is sited on an axis with the house’s rear facade and includes an infinity edge to take advantage of the property’s sloping terrain—an aspect of the landscape that was an exciting challenge for the team. The surrounding garden took its cues from the home’s architecture, with globe-shaped American boxwoods in pots placed at the column lines. Nearby, hydrangea, azalea, and autumn ferns create a foreground of seasonal interest. “The whole design was imagined as a structured landscape with tailored plantings near the house to support the strong architecture, then looser waves of plantings as you get further away and into the woodland beyond,” says Howard. And regardless of if you’re gazing from the covered limestone porch, the private garden off the primary bedroom, or the poolside firepit—from this vantage point, Atlanta has never looked better.

LANDSCAPE DESIGNER CECILIA DE GRELLE, LANDSCAPE VISION LLC LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT CARRIE STEINBAUM, LANDSCAPE VISION LLC ARCHITECT GIL SCHAFER, SCHAFER BUCCELLATO ARCHITECTS

Built on a site that had been in the homeowner’s family for generations, a new Florida home by architect Gil Schafer and landscape designer Cecilia de Grelle had a lot of programming to accommodate. The project required careful attention, needing to preserve the original home’s sense of memory and place while also rethinking the property’s layout to introduce a more relaxed way of living. To maximize interaction with the surrounding landscape, Schafer’s “H” floor plan allowed for windows on three walls in all of the home’s corner rooms. Views that may have normally highlighted utilitarian exterior spaces—such as a garage, AC units, or garbage bins— were protected thanks to the team’s creative relocation and implementation of gardens, walled courtyards, and on the west side of the house, a dramatic allée of palm trees that especially wows when the family entertains below the towering leaves. In the rear, the elegant pool adds to the air of sophistication provided by the house’s classic, Anglo-Caribbean style. And lush landscaping is abundant, with clipped hedges of ficus contrasted by a more natural assortment of plantings that relate nicely to the classicism of the house, says Schafer. “Cecilia and I made a point to rely on plants that felt very much of the place—to give the garden a loose and jungly character balanced by a certain formality and structure.” Mission accomplished. 13

Make Way During the restoration of this historic home in Marietta, architect Frances Zook and designer Beth Meyer wanted the backyard to match the grandeur of the property it sat on. “The priority of the new homeowners was to have more space for their growing number of grandchildren,” says Meyer. “We wanted the pool house to be unique and make a statement against the newly designed pool area.” To enhance the pool house’s existing structure, Zook incorporated character-rich details and a mix of materials—including a granite entry arch, board-and-batten siding, a custom steel railing, steel doors to mimic the new arch of the stone, and copper lanterns—that blend seamlessly with the original facade. Space was borrowed from a seldom-used working kitchen to make room for alfresco dining and relaxation areas in the open breeze. Various plantings completed by the previous homeowner help usher the home into its new lease on life. Says Meyer, “The family now thoroughly enjoys the space. Their grandchildren bring all their friends for playdates filled with swimming and picnic lunches.” 16

Blooming Beauty Landscape architect Lucinda Bray collaborated with late architect Frank Neely and builder Jim Sculac on a full renovation of this charming estate in the heart of Atlanta, where stately hedges and a reclaimed limestone planter filled with greenery greet guests as they arrive. In the backyard, entertaining is easy thanks to a variety of spaces—including a newly designed pool, an outdoor dining area, flower and vegetable gardens, and a firepit. “A bluestone terrace area and retaining wall were added to enlarge the space surrounding the pool,” says Bray. “A cutting garden fills the space below the pool wall and provides season-long blooms, including a mixture of boxwood evergreens, iris, lamb’s ears, foxglove, and more.” Utilizing wood beams salvaged from the existing home’s structure, raised plant beds with a pea gravel garden surround provide fresh vegetables for the homeowners. Complete with a white deer fence that mingles seamlessly with the architecture of the home, the garden is just as much a design accent as it is a functional growing space.

largest ground-up hotel development in 40 years, recently made its splashy debut. Built on the repurposed foundation of the Georgia Dome, the property boasts a superb location, connected by a pedestrian walkway to the Georgia World Congress Center and situated next to Mercedes-Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena. But the hotel’s generous event space and luxury amenities, such as an entire floor dedicated to wellness, should prove equally appealing to business and leisure travelers alike. “With over 100,000 square feet of meeting space, including Georgia’s largest hotel ballroom, Signia by Hilton Atlanta caters extensively to corporate events, multiday

celebrations, and weddings and parties,” says hotel general manager TERI AGOSTA. “Event organizers will also have access to more than 30,000 square feet of outdoor space.” Agosta also notes that the hotel has eight food and beverage options, including signature restaurant Capolinea, which serves Italian and contemporary American cuisine. Currently the tallest building on the Westside, the 42-story hotel also stands out for its bold contemporary design. Enveloped in glass, the building is notable for its soaring openconcept lobby as well as the panoramic views of the Downtown skyline that can be seen from within each guest room, some which directly overlook Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Winning Streak

The U.S. SOCCER FEDERATION recently announced plans to build its new National Training Center in Fayette County. Encompassing over 200 acres of land near the Town at Trilith, the center will serve as the organization’s headquarters and feature over a dozen soccer fields, indoor courts, and more than 200,000 square feet of high-performance facilities to be used by all 26 national soccer teams. Citing the area’s proximity to HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport and its diverse, vibrant community as having influenced their decision, U.S. Soccer also credits Coca-Cola, a founding partner of the National Training Center, for their choice of location. A coup for Fayette County and the Metro Atlanta area, the new training center is expected to create around 440 new jobs through a $228-million investment. It will also likely burnish Atlanta’s reputation as a sports town, one which was already boosted when the city was selected to cohost FIFA World Cup 2026. “This training center and headquarters will create a new center of gravity for American soccer, right here in Metro Atlanta’s Fayette County,” says KATIE KIRKPATRICK, president and CEO of the Metro Atlanta Chamber. “There is no place better suited to boost U.S. Soccer’s nationwide effort to increase sports access for all communities.”

I love driving around town this time of year. It puts me in such a joyous mood to see the azaleas beginning to bloom and the jonquils poking their heads out of the ground. But the springtime flower show isn’t my first of the year, because I’ve been enjoying spring blossoms and summertime produce for months now, all from the comfort of my home. You see, it all started last fall when I placed the winning bid on some porcelain veggies at auction. When they arrived at my home and I put them on display, I decided that they needed a more naturallooking environment, so I re-covered a few nearby chairs and stools in Lee Jofa’s Althea floral-print fabric. Porcelain peapods and endive partnered with a floral fabric turned out to be a winning combination, so much so that it got me hooked on all manner of floral and produce-bedecked furnishings. Now, my home is a veritable indoor botanical garden and potager rolled into one. In no way did I need another set of china, but I couldn’t resist Herend’s Market Garden pattern. The design is so pretty (pears, mushrooms, and radishes galore!) that I would prefer never to obscure it by serving food on it. Produce is also now a theme in my kitchen pantry, which just received a vibrant new finish: Twigs Haymarket wallpaper, a profusion of cabbage, cauliflower, beans, and blackberries. If only I could find a nearby greengrocer with such tempting produce. Elsewhere in my home, I’ve succumbed to the charm of antique botanical prints as well as fruit- and vegetableshaped Limoges boxes, which are displayed abundantly alongside the original porcelain pieces that got me into trouble in the first place. Incidentally, the cabinet that holds all that porcelain has begun to look very much like a victory garden planted in my living room. Unlike real fruits and vegetables, I just can’t seem to get enough of the decorative variety, but I’m starting to discover that there really can be too much of a good thing. 29

ATLANTANS WERE overjoyed to hear that James Beard-nominated chef Jason Liang and business partner John Chen were relocating their Japanese-style concept, Brush Sushi, to Buckhead Village District. Complete with two private omakase rooms, doors to the new location opened this past September. The updated menu highlights starter dishes like their Spicy Tuna Tartare, a variety of sushi à la carte options (both Temaki and Maki), as well as a selection of signature nigiri, hot dishes, and tableside services. “Our foundation is established using traditional techniques and flavors, while creating new and ambitious ingredient combinations based off of stories and personal experiences,” says Liang. Brush

30

Sushi is also one of the first Japanese restaurants in Atlanta to offer dry-aged fish. The process of dry-aging enhances the fish’s natural flavors and results in a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Guests participating in an omakase experience learn more in-depth about this particular technique and take part in a dry-aging versus fresh sashimi tasting. Designed to showcase unique Japanese ingredients and complement Liang’s cuisine, the new beverage program is curated by beverage director Mona McAllen. “My approach to the cocktail menu is to craft imaginative and delicious drinks, like our signature Umami cocktail,” says McAllen. “I strive to showcase my personal favorites, such as sake,

while also presenting a product to our guests that is enticing and approachable.” Collaborating with architect John Moore, Clara Liang, chef Liang’s wife, took the restaurant’s design to new heights. About the Kitchen A significant opening and reorientation of this kitchen into the new combined living space was the primary design goal for Matthew and interior designer Monika Thiels for the life she wanted for her family. That was not as easy in practice as the original historic house and its additions had load bearing points in the walls that needed removing. However, the design incorporated those points and unified the space, creating the feeling of a closed-in sunroom that opens to the rest of single living space. A clean white simple handle-free SieMatic kitchen with sleek Gaggenau appliances makes the kitchen timeless and the perfect complement to the contemporary yet eclectic materials of the house and the interior design elements.

About the Designer Matthew D. Rao, CKD founded RAO Design Studio in 2003. He began his kitchen career in 1988 and has had a long association with the SieMatic and Gaggenau brands. The idea of the kitchen as the central social space of the home has been a main theme in his work. Through communication and his passion for cooking, Rao has helped hundreds of clients have an experience of a design for living that unifies form, function, and a love for shared stories.

About the Kitchen

BUILDER Fitzgerald Construction

This colorful kitchen underwent a big transformation from a small undersized space to the vibrant, open area that it is now. The homeowners purchased a new home and lived there as-is for a short time before realizing the kitchen was undersized for their needs. They decided to renovate the kitchen area, allocating more of the existing space to the kitchen. The layout and placement of appliances and task zones were reworked, two islands were added, and a coffee room was created to the side of the kitchen. A bourbon and wine room with a backlit countertop and backsplash was also added as a key feature adjacent to this space. The homeowners’ love of color and texture drove the design with the use of deep blue and gray. These colors were used on portions of the cabinetry as well as on rift oak panels for built-in refrigeration and sliding barn doors leading into the beverage room. Zinc metal accents and banding were added to the island ends and the oak doors and panels to complement the new stainless zinc hood. The range area is surrounded by a dark blue tile to bring in the colors from the rest of the kitchen and the natural quartzite countertop pulled in amazing tones of blue, gray, and taupe to unite all elements of the color scheme.

About the Kitchen The pièce de résistance of this modern design is unmistakably the “floating” island. Built on a sleek raised steel frame is a spectacular, gray-stained white oak island in the center of the kitchen. The striking charcoal perimeter cabinetry is asymmetrical and to the ceiling with perfectly integrated appliances. The natural light and view of the private backyard with pool never gets old. As you exit the kitchen area, you will feel how complete the full entertainment space is with a view of the 10’ bar wall. This tall, captivating cabinet wall serves as an inviting beverage area with a wine refrigerator on the lounge side and beautifully lit bookshelves on the living side.

About the Kitchen

COUNTERTOPS Construction Resources, Inc.

This kitchen and house as a whole was the epitome of traditional design when the clients moved in. The goal was to maintain the classic bones of the home while integrating sleek design elements and finishes that fit with the homeowner’s more transitional taste. A symmetrical design layout alongside inset cabinetry, a plaster hood, unlacquered brass hardware, and a linear light fixture created a visually calm and clean aesthetic. Meanwhile, a walnut island with Taj Mahal Quartzite countertops and backsplash grounded the kitchen in its traditional roots.

PROFESSIONAL BUILDER Ladisic Fine Homes

This iconic English Manor estate from the 1920s has undergone a meticulous transformation in collaboration between Studio Entourage and Wolf Design Group The original kitchen has been expanded and seamlessly integrated with the family room to create an ideal workflow. Our vision was to craft a modern and functional kitchen that harmoniously blends with the vintage charm of the 1920s home. Stained wood panels conceal the refrigerator and access to the “back of house” area, while the original brick and plaster structures are retained, providing a fitting backdrop for the authentic Ilve brass and ivory range. A new steel window at the working sink introduces natural light and offers expansive views of the front yard. The addition of a herringbone wood floor seamlessly connects with the original bowtie joint hardwoods. The use of brass fixtures, neutral tones, and beautiful Calacatta marble create a calming space to nurture culinary creativity.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE 2024 BENEFACTOR CO-CHAIRS Each year, we invite new and old friends to savor wine and food while supporting our beloved High Museum of Art. For over thirty years, the High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction has brought the best wineries to Atlanta to share their wonderful wines with our benefactors. Our mission to support the High along with our love for delicious wine is the perfect reason to join us in March to “party with a purpose.” Since 1993, our generous Benefactors and long-time vintner friends have helped the Wine Auction raise $37 million to support the High Museum of Art and we are counting on our community to pull together once more to continue our time-honored tradition. Becoming a Benefactor is the only way to ensure you will be part of this fantastic event. The Wine Auction’s exclusive events consistently sell out so becoming a Benefactor ensures you have access to all the top wineries and standout chefs we invite every year. Your support allows the High Museum to continue serving diverse audiences and engaging the community with world-class exhibitions and dynamic programs. 2024 SPECIAL GUEST OF HONOR CRISTIAN VALLEJO

6

HMWA 2024.indd 6

1/25/24 12:17 PM

Cristian Vallejo has spent 24 years in the wine industry thus far—all filled with inspiration, amazing experiences and worthwhile stories that have led him to who he is today. For Vallejo, wine has been a way to express his thoughts, feelings and personality, a way to share a deeper connection with others. Some people say that it’s an art, but for Vallejo, it’s the only form of art where there are two composers: nature and the winemaker. Cristian’s story as a winemaker began at the Undurraga Winery in 1996 as a cellar hand and assistant winemaker. He used his time there to learn about the wine creation process from start to finish. In 1997, he worked at Portifica Universidad Católica de Chilé. While there, Cristian worked in viticulture with students and got involved in other wineries’ projects, such as the “Pueblo Antiguo winery,” where he and his students used ampelography to identify the different varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Merlot) in the vineyards. Vallejo then worked as an assistant winemaker at Valdivieso in Maule Valley in 1998 where they made a variety of whites including Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. After the 1998 vintage, Cristian began working at TerraMater. While there (until 2007), Vallejo worked with consultants like David Morrison, Nick Butler and Patrick Valette. He created two ranges of fine wines: “Unusual” and “Mater” blends. The first was created in 2003 and was a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Shiraz and Zinfandel. The second, “Mater,” had those same varieties with Sangiovese. During this time, Vallejo was the first Chilean winemaker to produce high-end Zinfandel. In between, Vallejo spent time in United States at Franciscan Estate. Quintessa wine was crafted there and Vallejo made it a priority to learn more about one wine in particular—the Mighty Zin. Cristian also worked in Spain in 2001 and became an assistant winemaker at Clos Montblanc in the Barberà del la Conca region. His next journey led him to Château Margaux in 2003 where he worked with Paul Pontallier and Philippe Bascaules. This experience taught him how to create elegant, fine wine while learning French and making great friends that remain close today. Vallejo fell in love with France and decided to go back in 2004 to work at Léoville Poyferré with Didier Cuvelier and his family. Two years later, he joined them to work at Château Le Crock in Saint-Estèphe. In 2005, Vallejo felt called to Saint-Émilion and worked at Château Berliquet.

During that year, he also went to Italy to learn about Pinot Grigio at Cantina Toblino with Lorenzo Tomazzoli. He returned in 2006 to help with their viticultural management. The next challenge began in November 2007 when he met Alex and Carrie Vik. At the time they had 30 hectares planted and 400 people working; that is when Vallejo saw so much potential. When Alex and Carrie invited him to be part of the team, he was confident there was enormous growth slated for the terroir with its different valleys, varying solar exposures, diversity of altitude and soils. All of this added up to one thing: complexity. He knew at that time a great wine would be crafted there. Now that he and his fantastic team have planted the whole vineyard (323 hectares), and have built the winery and hotel, VIK is on its way to becoming one of the world’s finest wineries. At VIK, three amazing wines are offered, each with its own artistic complexity that intersect at one common point, elegant and well-balanced tannins. Vallejo, Alex and Carrie Vik pioneered the region and were the first to develop the DO Millahue. Now, they are working on two new projects: “Amphoir and Barroir.” These are both intended to showcase their terroir in the purest way possible. The word “Amphoir” comes from amphoras and terroir because they are making the amphoras using the clay on their property. The name “Barroir” is derived from barrel and terroir because they toast the French oak barrels using their own oak from the property. Vallejo’s robust experiences around the globe have made him a well-rounded winemaker who is enthusiastic about networking, innovating, and fostering his passion for wine.

CATHY RHODES

CARLI REIS

Cathy is honored and excited to co-chair the 2024 High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction. She and her husband, Scott, have enjoyed collecting wine and traveling to wine regions around the world for the last 30 years. She looks forward to bringing top wineries and chefs to the Wine Auction which will aid in raising money for High Museum programs that are near and dear to her heart.

Carli is honored to be co-chairing the 2024 High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction. She is thrilled to see the events unfold and have another incredible year to “party with a purpose.”

In addition to the Wine Auction, Cathy has been involved with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as former chair of the Hope and Will Ball and she served as Chair of the Brookhaven Friends of CHOA. Other organizations that she volunteers with include the National Charity League, City of Refuge, and Agape. Her love of the arts led her to leadership roles for the Trinity School Spotlight on Art for several years and The Lovett School Fine Arts program. Cathy and Scott enjoy visiting their three adult children, as well as hiking, biking, and skiing. Cathy is the founder of Cathy Rhodes Interiors, a residential design firm based in Atlanta.

Carli has two school-aged daughters with her husband, Steve, and stays busy with the girls’ various sports and activities. She’s trying to make the most of this fun stage where her children are old enough to be somewhat independent and yet young enough to still want to hang out with their parents. Professionally, Carli is a licensed psychologist and splits time between her private practice and serving as the consulting psychologist at the Trinity School. Given her research knowledge and clinical experience with children, Carli is inspired by the High’s incredible community engagement to help provide children with access to the arts. In addition to supporting the High Museum, Carli also serves on Odyssey Atlanta’s Mental Health Committee, the PaulUnited Committee (a local group that helps fundraise targeted research for Pediatric Cancer treatment) and is supporting the 2024 Cathedral Giving By Design event. In her free time, Carli enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, playing Mahjong, attending live music, cooking, and of course, learning about and enjoying delicious wine.

HIGH MUSEUM OF ART HIGHLIGHTS HEAR ME NOW: THE BLACK POTTERS OF OLD EDGEFIELD, SOUTH CAROLINA

.

FEBRUARY 16 —MAY 12, 2024 The High will be the exclusive Southeast venue for this landmark exhibition featuring nearly sixty ceramic objects created by enslaved African Americans in Edgefield, South Carolina, in the decades before the Civil War. Considered through the lens of current scholarship in the fields of history, literature, anthropology, material culture, diaspora, and African American studies, these nineteenth-century vessels testify to the lived experiences, artistic agency, and material knowledge of those who created them. The works include monumental storage jars by literate potter and poet Dave (later recorded as David Drake, ca. 1801-1870s) and rare examples of utilitarian wares and face vessels by unrecorded makers, including a ca. 1840 water cooler jug from the High’s collection. Hear Me Now will also link the past to the present with work by leading contemporary Black artists who have responded to or whose practice connects with the Edgefield story, including Theaster Gates, Simone Leigh, and Woody De Othello. This exhibition is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

TRUTH TOLD SLANT: CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY MARCH 22—AUGUST 11, 2024 This exhibition will feature the work of Rose Marie Cromwell, Jill Frank, Tommy Kha, Zora J. Murff, and Kristine Potter, five photographers who take unique approaches to documentary photography that challenge the principles of observing the contemporary world. The more than 75 works in the exhibition, including several from the High’s collection, exemplify a recent shift in how photographers have taken up the challenge of making meaningful images from the world around them in a lyrical way, rather than utilizing the traditional approach of the dispassionate observer. These artists consider issues that documentary photographers have grappled with for decades and that remain pertinent to contemporary American life: race and inequality; identity and sexual orientation; immigration and globalization; youth and coming of age; climate change and environmental justice; and the uncanny pervasiveness of violence. There are overlaps and intersections of these topics within each body of work as the artists address the pulse of the moment while self-consciously skirting the direct and detached methods of traditional documentary photography. This exhibition is organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

DUTCH ART IN A GLOBAL AGE: MASTERPIECE THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON APRIL 19—JULY 14, 2024 This exhibition brings together more than 100 paintings—still lifes, portraits, seascapes, landscapes, architectural views, and genre scenes – as well as prints, maps, and decorative arts spanning the seventeenth and the first half of the eighteenth century by the period’s leading Dutch artists including Rembrandt, Jacob van Ruisdael, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, Willem Kalf, and Rachel Ruysch. Representing the highest artistic achievement, these works are considered in the context of global exchange and colonialism. The display explores how Dutch preeminence in international maritime trade and the influx of new goods and information transformed life in the Netherlands and led to a remarkable cultural flowering. The art of this period reflects how the Dutch wished to represent themselves, their ideals, and their concerns. Few artists addressed the human toll of colonialism headon, but many paintings reveal the influence of international expansion on Dutch art and society. The exhibition addresses these complex histories through up-to-date scholarship, contextualizing 17th and 18th-century Dutch art in a fresh, compelling way.

A SOFT, SOOTHING palette puts a present-day spin on this traditionally inspired home full of exquisite details. While imagining their forever family home, a couple found themselves drawn to a Tudor Revival residence in Buckhead. They reached out to the home’s architect, Frank Neely, to design an equally grand home on their plot of land just outside of Atlanta, but with a caveat: to make it light, bright, and approachable. “Traditional Tudor Revival houses tend to have a dark and heavy nature to them,

JessicaBradley.indd 77

however, these clients wanted a strong connection to the outdoors, so amid the classic elements we incorporated lots of windows and just a general sense of openness,” explains Todd Pullen, who alongside Christian Reed served as associate architects of the project before Neely’s passing last year. The home’s great room best exemplifies this marriage of styles. Spanning nearly 36 feet, a series of steel window doors floods the room with natural light while grand trusses gracing the vaulted ceiling add a

sense of history. Custom doors with charming Tudor arches flanking the fireplace have a similar effect. It’s the woodwork’s lighter finish—a careful choice by the team of architects and interior designer Jessica Bradley— though that keeps the look fresh. “Before we even tackled the interior furnishings, we really started off with the finishes of the house,” recalls Bradley. “One of the biggest decisions was deciding on the stain of the wood so that the house, even with its grand architectural details, feels cozy rather than formal.” The client’s desire for a more relaxed, family-centric home had them questioning their need for a traditional dining room. “I was up for the challenge of convincing them that it didn’t need to be an intimidating space used just twice a year,” says Bradley. A round table ensures conversations flow easily while leather chairs and an elegant fireplace offer a warm library-like aesthetic. Pocket doors add the final

The pool house was designed as far more than just a place to dry off. It’s a convivial sanctuary complete with an outdoor kitchen and multiple gathering spaces. SERENDIPITY—THAT’S THE only way to describe the evolution of this verdant property and the stately home that sits on it. That’s not to say it came without challenges, though, and thanks to a like-minded group of talents that included residential designer Rick Hatch of Harrison Design, interior designer Tish Mills, landscape architect John Howard, and residential builders McGarrity-Garcia, the new home blends seamlessly with the grandeur and grace of its Tuxedo Park neighbors. “This project was so incredibly collaborative,” says Mills. “We all knew that the new exterior of house had to look like it had always been there, but inside, the owners asked for more of an up-to-date look.” Two items that would remain top of mind throughout the project: applying tried-and-true materials to an interior design that lived for today, and preserving and enhancing the long-neglected garden designed by 20th-century classicist architect Philip Trammell Shutze. From the approach, the house is European in style. Thanks to its limestone exterior, slate roof, stalwart chimneys, and bifurcated stair, the facade relates well to its Georgian, Tudor, and Italian and Greek Revival neighbors. An additional wing

In Reflection “I never use a mirror unless it has a purpose,” says designer Tish Mills of the convex silvered mirror above the limestone fireplace. “This one brings more light into the room, and it also reflects the art on the opposite wall.”

keeps the front scale intact, but it allowed freedom to vary the architectural vocabulary. “The wing appears newer than the main part of the house,” says Hatch. “This gives it the look of a generational home that has been added to over time.” Hatch designed the main house with traditional rooms including the double-height foyer with floating staircase. “The stairs and custom railing were shaped from the bottom up so it would curve as one contiguous piece,” says Hatch of the stair’s sculptural effect. Just beyond through a cased opening, the living room ushers the homeowners into views of the resurrected garden framed by floor-to-ceiling iron windows inset with French doors. A French chandelier with plentiful flourishes contrasts the streamlined furnishings and accessories to create a finely balanced tension. “There are not many antiques in this house,” says Mills. “It’s much more transitional. New furnishings and contemporary art allow it to be elegant, but grounded.” Behind the fireplace wall, the design takes a turn as it moves into the wine room, a niche that offers a pause

before segueing into the kitchen. Here, an inset framed in glass looks into the back side of the living room fireplace. The minimalist look foreshadows the modification in architecture, where the kitchen serves as an L-bracket connecting a wing of living spaces to the back of the house. In this wing, the look is more agrarian than manor house. Open spaces unite beneath vaulted, beamed ceilings. Floorto-ceiling iron windows maintain the line of vision to the gardens and covered outdoor porch. “It was important to the owners that we maintain visual and physical flow to the outside, so we designed interiors that segued well with an indoor-outdoor lifestyle,” says Mills. In addition to a consistent use of materials and textureheavy neutrals in both the main house and the wing, the home’s other great unifier is the garden—a view enjoyed by nearly every room. “Siting the new house to relate to the garden was the trick,” says Howard. “We lowered the grade of the lot to minimize the slope. That allowed us to connect a new pool and terraced garden to the existing garden.” See Resources, Back of Book. 101

AFTER PURCHASING A second home in Highlands, North Carolina, interior designer Doug Weiss and his husband felt it was time to simplify their life in Atlanta and trade in their Inman Park house for a lower-maintenance condominium. “Everything we looked at was the same look; even if it was in an old building, everything was white and gray and any character had been erased,” shares Weiss. Eventually, they found their perfect match in a circa-1910 Druid Hills condo, one of five units housed in what was originally a sprawling estate. “We bought it right on the spot. It was really kismet,” says Weiss. “I love working on old homes. It’s so incredibly important to listen to the architecture because it will give you all the information you need.”

Though the couple was in love with the unit’s historic charm, bringing their new home into the 21st century—and making it feel personal—required significant renovations and thoughtful updates. In addition to gutting the kitchen and bathrooms, Weiss also added touches of symmetry throughout. In the living room, for instance, he added a new bookcase to match the room’s existing shelving and create a frame around the mahogany pocket doors. He also added a second doorway from the dining room into the kitchen to create symmetry with the double doors leading from the sunroom into the living room. “That opened up the home and still makes it feel very classical and proper for a home of this era,” says the designer. Weiss balanced old and new by layering the home with a mix of antiques, modern

artwork, and rich, bold colors—particularly teal, terracotta, and green. “I like to pick up a color from one room and take it to the next,” explains Weiss, who used the sunroom’s drapery fabric—Jim Thompson’s Central Park—as his inspiration for the home’s color scheme. Weiss enveloped the kitchen in his favorite color, green, by painting the cabinetry Farrow & Ball’s Bancha, a deep mossy hue. “Moving from the blues in the sunroom to the terracotta dining room to the green in the kitchen continues the evolution of color in the home,” says Weiss.

While strategically placed seating and dining areas lend themselves to the couple’s love of entertaining, Weiss paid equal attention to the home’s more personal spaces. The bedrooms and connecting hallway are swathed in moodier hues and textures, including a green velvet wallpaper in the hall. “I’ve come to a place where I really know what I like, and I’m not afraid. This home evolved very organically,” says Weiss. “It really represents what I love in design.” See Resources, Back of Book.

local luxury

“When it comes to finding unique vases, accessories, and more in Atlanta, I often explore local vintage stores for their character, but my personal favorite local artisans include Charlotte Smith Studios for her handcrafted pottery with a traditional minimalist approach, Benzur Wood Turnings for specialty wood vases, and Bella Cucina for the perfect no-fuss tabletop pieces.” charlottesmithstudios.com; benzur.wixsite.com/ benz; bellacucina.com

My most recent acquisition is one of my new favorite Southern artists, Michael James Cisarik.” michaeljamescisarik.com

on the nose

“While I’m generally not one to keep many candles in my home, the intriguing scents of D.S. & Durga’s Pasta Water Candle caught my attention, likely influenced 128

by being the son of an Italian woman. Around the same time, I received a gift of Flamingo Estate’s Roma Heirloom Tomato Candle. The natural pairing of these two when lit evokes a sense of warmth and culinary nostalgia.” dsanddurga.com; flamingoestate.com

in bloom

“Every floral arrangement looks better with some sort of fruit. The Dutch masters were onto something when they adorned their still lifes with cut fruit, fish, and butterflies, but one thing that remains consistent throughout time is designing with fruit. Light pink strawberries on the vine with geranium and feverfew, currants and grapes with clematis, or something as simple as apples on the branch with basil and similarly colored tulips—fruit adds interest to the eye and often helps ground the arrangement.”

“One of these days I’m going to throw an Octave, drawing inspiration from the historical Octaves hosted by Sir Henry Thompson, Professor of Surgery at University College, London. The concept indulges in eight courses, each thoughtfully paired with eight wines, served at 8 o’clock to eight guests. The dream is to recreate the refined and harmonious ambience of those distinguished gatherings.”
