So many great things are happening in Atlanta right now, especially within the design community. A number of shops and showrooms reported a surge in traffic over the past few months, which is good news considering summer is usually slower for design-related businesses. Architects, interior designers and builders have also been busier than in years past, and now that school is back in session, I predict even more people will be focused on improving their homes this fall. At the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center, a flurry of new showroom openings and key additions indicate a positive outlook from small business owners. All of these things add up to being a win-win for you and me, the consumers. Inspired by the boldness of decorating doyenne Dorothy Draper and the handiwork of William Morris, an Arts and Crafts leader, Fisher’s hand-blocked designs—created in her Atlanta studio—are anything but

average. Think large-scale Georgia O’Keefe-style rose hand-painted on a cotton canvas (“Dorothy Rose”), or hand-blocked whimsical fish (“Matsya”) and Easterninfluenced eye (“Shiva”) on 100 percent linen printed in the time-honored method of water-based fabric ink. ATLANTA RESTAUR ATEUR FORD FRY’S latest addition to his culinary empire, King + Duke, now holds court in the former Nava space on Peachtree Road. Named after cunning characters in Mark Twain’s American classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the King + Duke concept revolves around the restaurant’s central workhorse: a 24-foot wood-burning hearth. While Fry and King + Duke Executive Chef Joseph Schafer return to the primordial instincts of wood and fi re with the cuisine, the interiors—designed by New York design fi rm Meyer Davis Studio, Inc., of Southhampton’s Nobu and Miami’s The Dutch fame and architect Tim Nichols—are far from basic. Think clean

and contemporary, with a bank of floor-to-ceiling windows shedding light on whitewashed oak floors, a butternut wood-topped marble bar (a nod to the restaurant’s main source of flavor) and a hostess stand of the same material playing off a black built-in bookcase. A series of curved banquettes help foster a sense of intimacy in the 7,900-square-foot restaurant, as do details like leather-panel screens delineating spaces and wood-paneled walls peppered with artwork displayed salon style. Naomi von Habersham Decades ago, a well-appointed office meant dark brown reproduction furniture—and lots of it. Think mahogany kneehole desks fitted with brass hardware, Chippendale bookcases fi lled with leather-bound books and framed family photos and green leather swivel desk chairs. It wasn’t unattractive, but it sure was serious looking. No wonder it took a three-martini lunch to get the creative juices flowing. Thankfully, contemporary design made real inroads in office decor during the 1960s, right about the time I was hired as a girl Friday. The fi rst office in which I worked was kitted out with Herman Miller’s legendary Action Office System II—in other words, cubicles. How revolutionary! No doors to stand in the way of productivity! In reality, not much work was accomplished if you were stuck next to a loudmouth colleague. On the other hand, the lack of doors certainly came in handy when organizing after-work outings to Harrison’s and Clarence Foster’s, two of Atlanta’s hottest happy hour spots during the 1970s. Nothing, however, has changed both the way we do business and decorate our offices more than the computer. Thirty years ago, personal computers were behemoths, so big they often required their own desks. Today, you can conduct most of your business in the palm of your hand. And the fax machine, once de rigueur in every office, is nearly déclassé now. Perhaps we should also add the water cooler to the list of office relics, especially considering the ubiquity of bottled water. But for all the cool, sleek furniture that graces today’s corporate interiors—not to mention those smart phones and tablets that do everything for us—what I miss most are the elegant, luxurious and erudite office accessories of yesteryear. Think Tiffany & Co. sterling silver perpetual calendars, Mark Cross leather blotters, Mont Blanc pens and those mammoth Oxford English dictionaries. Even the more mundane items like “While You Were Out” message pads now have nostalgic flair, reminding me of a time when we conducted business by phone, marked appointments in desk calendars and spent happy hour with coworkers at Harrison’s!

Inspired by the lore of the southern kitchen, chef Brian Jones of Atlanta Grill is passionate about perfecting classic regional foods such as pimento cheese.

Referred to as the pâté of the South, pimento cheese enjoys a rich culinary history. Yet you’d be hardpressed to find the original recipe in any cookbook; favorites are passed down in the oral tradition. It’s a familiar subject for Brian Jones, chef de cuisine at Atlanta Grill and chief Pimentologist, whose passion for southern cooking began as a child working alongside his aunts in their family gardens. The Pimentologist ritual is popular among The Ritz-Carlton, Atlanta visitors, many of whom gather in the lobby on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 5 for complimentary tastings. Here, Chef Jones chats with us about one of the region's culinary mainstays.

WHAT'S THE LOCAL HISTORY BEHIND PIMENTO CHEESE? Southern states

began growing sweet pimentos in the 1920s. Working families needed a low-cost sandwich that could be easily packed for later, so the spread went from tea rooms to lunchboxes. In many homes in the South, pimento cheese was always in the refrigerator.

I recommend one red pepper (roasted, peeled, seeded and diced); one pound of grated sharp Cheddar cheese; one cup of homemade mayonnaise (or a good southern-style mayo); and a pinch of cayenne, salt and pepper. Just mix together until it’s well blended! Always use the best ingredients— no pimentos from a jar. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PIMENTO CHEESE DISHES? I’ve just

Who else loves fall as much as I do? It’s a wonderful— and extremely busy—time of year, especially in the South with college football, tailgating, holidays and, of course, traveling. But I still can’t believe summer is over already and the kids are back to school … sigh. As the temperatures cool and I reflect on those longgone lazy days of summer, I hope you’ll join me for our third issue of Healthy Travel. We’ll head out West to the most divine spas in Sedona and the coolest ranch in Montana, with plenty of horseback riding, fly-fishing, rafting, hot air ballooning and sleeping in a “luxury” tent. It was late afternoon

as the horses were being led to a corral in front of the Wilderness Outpost, or the WO (pronounced “whoa”), the central hub from which guests at the 37,000-acre Resort at Paws Up ventured out on countless outdoor adventures. From here, rolling hills and monochromatic swards of green stretched out in every direction, an animated sea of ponderosa pines and graygreen sage bushes popping and flickering across a breezy landscape, while the snow-capped Swan Mountains peaked in the distance. I had come to this luxury Western-style ranch in Greenough, Montana, to escape mundane fitness rituals and the burdens of “working out” in lieu of something more inspired. With 100 miles of trails and activities from flyfishing and kayaking to rappelling and ATV tours, Paws Up had delivered in magical doses. In the middle of the corral, I spotted Cherokee, a tall quarter-horse painted with large patches of black and white 29

and the same horse I had ridden during the morning cattle drive. Only moments after I’d hopped on his back, Cherokee and I had been put to the test. He a little stubborn and me perhaps too eager, we set off on the three-hour drive in the company of our ranch hands and five other riders to gather, trail and corral Corriente cattle, a spritely rodeo breed distinguished by long horns. This was not easy work. The cows often escaped, which meant one of us had to chase after the cow without chasing the cow away, while the other riders tried to keep the rest of the herd together. Still, we managed to keep these escape artists in a group as we moved across pastures and through stands of trees to a working corral. There, we sorted the boys from the girls in mock rodeo competitions. Never mind the sweat, I was herding cattle from atop a horse and the sky was as big and as blue as they say it is in Montana. I could do this all day long. Cherokee swished his tail from the middle of the corral and barely glanced my way. No hurt feelings on my part; he was off the clock and, technically, so was I. I’d recognized that feeling most on a float down the legendary Blackfoot River, of which some 10 miles weave through Paws Up country. This same river, made famous by Lewis & Clark and Norman Maclean and Brad Pitt in A River Runs Through It, 31

had swept away the burdens of email, errands and work, and left a simpler demand in its place: Look ahead and paddle. The flowing river turned occasionally to rapids, which required a more primitive response: Pay attention or get tossed. Some two-and-a-half hours later (and 625-plus calories unwittingly burned), our guide landed our raft on a small beach for a gourmet picnic. I found myself always eager for more at Paws Up, where I also took on the thrill of sporting clays, a target game that simulates field hunting against a sweeping valley. The gun was heavy and my arms shook at first, but adrenaline kicked in and, with four out of six shots nailed, I was hooked. In the morning, a friend joined me for runs on rocky trails that traversed open plans, sparse forests and the banks of the Blackfoot. What’s next, I wondered wishfully. Later that night, while lying in a plush bed inside of my luxurious safari-style “glamping” tent at the new Cliffside Camp, I listened to the rushing river as it thrashed through

the small gorge below. It was a tremendous sound—loud yet calming, powerful yet peaceful. Cherokee disappeared into the herd as the last of the horses entered the corral. Some sipped water from the trough while others rolled around in the dirt, scratching and shaking off the day’s work. Two horses played tug of war with a plastic bowl. One proud gelding trotted around neighing and snorting. I was so enthralled by the horses that I hardly noticed that the ranch hands had been lining up a string of gates across the main road. They were creating a safe passage for the horses to cross over to an endless pasture, where they typically spent the night. This seemed so foreign and free to me (no barn?!). The horses had worked, fed on hay, cavorted in the corral and now waited, ears perked up and restless for the gate to open. As the plane glides down over the rugged Arizona landscape, I think to myself, “We’ll leave the camping trips to the guys, thank you very much.” Our surroundings may look rustic at first glance, but I know soon my daughter, Leigh, and I will be sinking into cloudlike beds in Phoenix and Scottsdale—not plumping our sleeping bags for a night on the hard dirt. This is our idea of roughing it. Let the mother-daughter weekend begin!

There’s just something about breathing in mountain air, and that’s exactly how we start the afternoon following high tea at the ARIZONA BILTMORE. Hiking Squaw Peak is a bit strenuous, and we’re in awe of the locals who are sprinting up the steep hills ahead of us. But when we reach the top and ask our guide from the hotel to snap a photo, a wave of pride crashes over me. We did it, together: I high-five Leigh. Bonding moment one, check. We’re definitely work hard, play hard kind of gals, so after the hike we slip away to the ARIZONA BILTMORE’S SPA . I instantly dip into vacation stupor during the Dream Catcher Aromatherapy Massage, where

essential oils and hot stones are placed on my spine before a full body massage, starting with my feet. When Leigh is finished with her mani/pedi, we meet up for dinner at ST. FRANCIS . Staying on top of our eating habits is easy with a menu that’s heavy on local vegetables. We decide on mostly gluten- and dairy-free dishes like the Kale Caesar, Beets (with avocado, red onion and citrus vinaigrette), Roasted Salmon Superfood with quinoa, and Market Vegetable Flatbread as we excitedly discuss the next day’s itinerary. The sparkle in Leigh’s eyes is contagious. Bonding moment two, check. The second day finds us on our

way to the SONORAN DESERT AT USERY for yoga. The view is breathtaking as we pose and stretch through an all-level class that focuses on breathing technique and balance. I glance over at Leigh and smile serenely as the teacher proclaims my daughter a natural. Next up: kayaking with Arizona Outback Adventures. I’m excited to experience the city’s water recreation scene with these great guides, and they don’t disappoint! We take the floating path down the Lower Salt River, where we catch glimpses of wild horses. As the sun sets on another day, we’re happy and tired. Bonding moments three and four, check.

Our last day proves the most challenging and exciting yet— we head to the WESTIN KIERLAND RESORT & SPA and quickly change in anticipation of an hour-long FlowRider Flowboarding session. I’m nervous; Leigh’s determined. We’ll be combining the tricks of surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding and wakeboarding as we balance ourselves on simulated rapids. It’s exhilarating … and not easy! I wipe out again and again—maybe it’s lack of experience, or maybe it’s just because we’re laughing so hard, wiping water from our eyes and having the time of our lives. Leigh, of course, manages to conquer the board. I’m one proud mom. Bonding moment five, check.

To relax after flowboarding we book treatments at Agave, the Westin’s spa, where we indulge in motherdaughter massages. I opt for the Rollerssage, a treatment that pairs Swedish techniques with radiant heat from semiprecious stones. The result: instant soothing of my tight muscles. Leigh tries the new FlowRider Massage, an athletic treatment that incorporates stretching and flexibility and a welldeserved reward for hanging ten. Blissed-out bonding moment six, check. I think we can get used to this. It’s our last night in Arizona, and I have to admit, I’m a little sad. I’ve grown accustomed to hanging out with my girl, trying new activities,

experiencing fabulous spas and eating amazing local foods. Determined to go out with a bang, we enjoy a fresh seafood dinner at DESEO —a true find at the Westin Kierland—that includes lobster and tuna tacos, a trio of ceviche and crab-and-sausage paella. Leigh treats herself to a non-alcoholic raspberry mojito with a stick of fresh sugarcane, and I sneak in a cocktail. (Psst: We hear the best spots are around the islet of Pain de Sucre, off Gustavia Harbor, and near Coco Islet off Colombier Bay.) Don’t miss Grande Saline Beach, where you’ll find very few people and no buildings or hotels. Bold vacationers should definitely give wind surfing, kite boarding or paddle boarding a chance. Like Utah’s Arches, Bryce and Zion, Sedona is crisscrossed by exhilarating hiking trails and ethereal, majestic red-rock formations. But it also boasts an attribute those national parks don’t: spa resorts. Sedona, a two-hour drive from both Phoenix and the Grand Canyon, has become wildly popular, largely for its subdued resorts that focus on wellness, fitness and unique spa treatments. With my wife, I spent four blissful days hiking the trails, unwinding in the spas and relishing the four most notable resorts. I heartily recommend you do the same. Here are some of our favorites.

ENCHANTMENT RESORT Boynton Canyon, boxed on three sides by cliff walls, is still considered sacred by the Yavapai tribe, but the resort that’s there now is not a case of paradise lost. All buildings match the surrounding burnt orange cliffs. Sunlight streams into the casitas, casas and haciendas from windows, even above the showers. The enchantment begins with airy restaurants and bars; pools, a tennis center and a putting course; and about 15 free daily activities that always include a sunrise stretch, fitness walk, red-rocks hike, yoga class and guided meditation. Most activities commence at Mii Amo, the resort’s renowned destination spa, which includes a meditation room, Watsu pool, spa cafe and juice bar. Sedona’s natural beauty is still pervasive, with the formation called Snoopy high above and a path below the pool leading 50 feet to Oak Creek. You’re a three-minute walk to the restaurants and shops of uptown Sedona, where trolley and jeep tours depart hourly, yet it’s quiet here, especially on our guestroom balcony above the creek (all rooms have balconies and spa tubs). L’AUBERGE DE SEDONA Whether you stay in one of the cabins on stilts in view of the red rocks above or in a garden or creekside cottage, you’ll enjoy amenities such as cedar outdoor showers, spa tubs, fireplaces and down bedding. L’Auberge is an unabashedly romantic refuge, as the only sounds are the purr of Oak Creek and wind-rustled sycamores. Even if you don’t stay there, brunch or dinner at the fine dining restaurant is worth the expense, as the outdoor tables are nestled among the trees and so close to the creek you could fall in. HILTON SEDONA RESORT This leisure-focused Hilton is unlike the understated, low-rise inns that inhabit the rest of Sedona, but it’s the best match for families and fitness-minded travelers. The former will love the hotel’s affordability, large rooms and four pools. The latter can choose between playing at the adjacent Sedona Golf Resort course or at the on-property fitness complex. Inside the complex are a lap pool, fitness center, yoga studio and spa. In the spa, a therapist slathered me with fragrant, mineral-rich clay, swathed me in towels and then rinsed me with a Vichy shower. TERRIFIC TRAILS

Sedona’s back roads and Coconino National Forest trails make it a mecca for road biking, mountain biking and running, but hiking is the high king of outdoor options. The abundance and variety of well-marked trails is stupefying: 400 miles of interconnected trails lace out from starting points just minutes from Sedona’s resorts. Most trails bring you up close and personal with the beloved red rocks—which sport colorful names like Snoopy, Camel’s Head and Giant’s Thumb—as you hike to, from, beneath, above, over or around them. Pine nut-bearing pinon pines, wind-twisted junipers and countless cactus species line the paths. We hiked Teacup Trail (curiously close to Coffee Pot Rock), Courthouse Loop Trail (which circumnavigates massive Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock on a desert where old Westerns were filmed), Wilson Canyon Trail (a creekhugging path through low forest) and Red Rock Crossing Trail (where creekside stone cairns are stacked dozens high at “Buddha Beach”). The locavore—or “farm-to-table”—movement has created a seismic change in how Georgians think about eating and dining. Farmers markets are bustling, and everyone wants to eat locally. Now, that all-things-local ethos has extended to floral design, and Keith Robinson of Gloriosa is a garden/floral/event designer who has long celebrated the beauty of locally grown plants and flowers. “Some of the most beautiful floral designs are those that have the appearance of having just come from the garden and created the composition based on what was growing,” says Robinson. “Commercial florists moved away from that for some time, but the trend now is to honor the ‘back to the garden’ look and feel in the arranging.” For Robinson, flower foraging has always played a part in his designs. At his personal home outside of Atlanta, he grows more than 12 varieties of hydrangeas and has more than 700 shrubs that often make their way into his designs. While there is an effortless look to the arrangements he creates using found materials, often the most casual ones are the most difficult to make. “There is a simplicity to them, but at the same time, there is a great deal of complexity in the color and juxtaposition of different flowers.” top row, left to right Smilax is loosely wrapped around a stylized beaker that contains green hydrangea and haricot vert. THE WORKSPACES OF THREE OF THE CITY’S MOST RESPECTED DESIGN FIRMS ARE AS CHIC AND COMFORTABLE AS THE HOMES THEY CREATE

JUDY BENTLEY When Judy Bentley was in search of a new office a year ago, she knew she wanted a completely different look than her primary residence, a Georgian-style townhome that is classically decorated in fresh blue and white (a signature of Bentley’s). Her new, airy office at the tony decorative arts and antiques enclave at 2300 Peachtree Road is graced with architectural and design elements that create a bright, open space. “Natural light is imperative in our line of work,” she says. “The openness, lighting and Asian influence in the furnishings create a calm environment for creativity to flow,” says Bentley. 120

“One of my main reasons for choosing this space was the view of the arched window as you come around the reception wall with the sculptures.” In addition to being stylish and aesthetically pleasing, the new office is also a functioning workspace that offers a blank canvas for Bentley and her team as they create palettes and schemes for the various projects they’re working on around the country. Simplicity is also key. “I feel like my office is in New York, with its high ceilings and loft-like layout, which is one reason that I kept the space simple,” explains Bentley. “We deal with so many details in my line of work—it is nice to work in a unique environment.”

AMY MORRIS When Amy Morris entered the two-story, light-filled space in Peachtree Hills, she knew her quest to find an office for her design business, Amy D. Morris Interiors, had ended. Morris considers natural light a must for her office. The space also meets her second stipulation—location. “We are in the heart of the design community near ADAC,” Morris says. Visitors may think they are entering a living room when they walk through the oversize front doors into an octagon-shaped room with 20-foot ceilings, velvet-tufted banquettes and a working fireplace. The room, however, is Morris’ interpretation of a 122

conference room. The cast-concrete conference table sits on a custom wool zebra rug under a 6-foot-tall rope-and-iron chandelier. The 750-square-foot area that’s now a studio was gutted to create an open workspace that fosters collaboration. White walls and work surfaces allow color schemes to be the main focus. In its previous lives, the office was first an antiques store and later a lingerie shop. A few retail businesses surround Morris’s office. Inside her space, Morris f loated two desks in front of a large window that faces Peachtree Hills Avenue. “We love watching all the activity on our quaint little corner,” she says.

SPITZMILLER & NORRIS For 25 years, the residential design firm of Spitzmiller & Norris was housed in a traditionally designed office. But since owners R ick Spitzmiller and Robert Norris moved to their new ADAC West location a few years ago, work doesn’t seem like work, even when it surrounds them all day. Both men believe atmosphere has everything to do with creativity and productivity, and they were adamant about finding a space with an abundance of natural light. “We spend long stretches of time at drawing tables and desks, and the connection we now enjoy with the outdoors keeps us from feeling isolated 124

from the world,” explains Spitzmiller. The 1,800-square-foot office is almost half the size of their old one, but doesn’t seem so. “Thanks to technology, we need less space for file cabinets and storage now,” Norris says. Defining this sophisticated yet relaxed environment is a soothing, warm white-and-stone palette, and 13-foot-high ceilings that allow light and air to f low unimpeded. However, with less square footage, all furnishings—a mix of classical and contemporary pieces—have to serve a real purpose. “Everything in this office is functional and aesthetically pleasing,” notes Norris.

here are almost as many fads in Atlanta interior design as there are in fashion. Sure, we love the classics, but we can’t let a good trend slip past. In the world of fabrics, ikats and suzanis continue to show up on throw pillows, duvet covers and even window treatments. No doubt we adore a good pattern. Yet one of the trends that fades in and out in local design is toile (also called toile de jouy by design professionals). The fabric depicts charming pastoral scenes and floral designs, and gives solid silks and wools a run for their money. There’s no question this humble printed cotton is here to stay; we use it everywhere, and elegant homes are awash in toile. Toile upholstery? Check. Toile curtains? Check. Toile table skirts? Check. Toile upholstered walls? Check. Toile bedding? Check. Walking into a toile bedroom is like walking into a toile cocoon. It’s elegant and simple yet complex. Even with busier designs, the overall effect is harmonious and pleasing. Who among us wouldn’t love a blue-and-cream toileladen master suite?

Toile’s most recent resurgence can be contributed to a number of old patterns and colorways that have been recalibrated for today’s times. Manuel Canovas and Pierre Frey piqued our interest with toiles in lavender and acid green and bright ruby reds and pinks. Large-scale prints and bolder patterns have moved from bedrooms and living rooms to handbags and even dinnerware. While in Paris earlier this year, I was surprised to see soigné French women in toilepatterned jeans. I purchased a couple pairs for myself and tossed in a pair for my daughter’s birthday. As we gear up to redecorate her bedroom in— what else?—toile, now she can wear it, too.
