Nepal Photos and text by: Johannes Oppewal, CEO TravelTelly Arriving in Nepal feels like you are entering the roof of the world: while flying into Katmandu Airport you can see the Himalayas through your window from the airplane. A magical view which brings you closer to one of the most mysterious countries on earth. I was there to film for 2 organizations.

known by tourists. With its small streets it is a lively scene of tourists, school kids and many other locals. The highlights of filming in Kathmandu were the Boudha Stupa, Monkey temple, Durbar Square, and the Thamel district. On Buddha’s birthday I was in Kathmandu, where I visited the Budha Stupa in the evening. Next to the beautiful sight of the Stupa at night I felt a special atmosphere around the Stupa, together with so many people. I always love the sight and sensation of monks. They always have something spiritual and an inner piece around them.

A way of transport in Nepal
For the second week I filmed for Himalayan Encounters. Together with Kushahari, my local guide, I made a trip through Nepal. We started in Nuwakot: a small village between the mountains. The ride to this place was already a lot of fun, just looking at how many people can get on a car to share a transport. We stayed in a cozy house with a nice view. The local staf f laughing when seeing my age at passport
The local people were lovely and the staff was funny. In every country you visit the first questions are always 1) Where are you from 2) How old are you and 3) Are you married? When answering the question how old I am, they didn’t believe me. They thought I was younger. Showing them my passport made them smile and believe me. I think traveling and doing what you love to do, keeps you young. It was a funny and special moment with the local staff. In Nuwakot I filmed some local school and I did an interview with deaf children. This was a very special and new moment for me. It is possible for you to volunteer at this school. After the first stop we filmed wild water rafting at the The Trisuli River. This is not only fun because of the rafting, but the staff of Himalayan Encounters made it the most fun. Definitely a trip worth taking when you are ever in Nepal. After this exciting experience we went to the Bandipur Nepal where we stayed in the Old Inn. Bandipur is a small mountain village that has become more and more popular for tourism. In the morning I took some amazing shots from the sun rising over the Himalayan mountain range. In Pokhara we went hiking and saw how people live in the mountains. We stayed at a home stay and our guest family made some amazing food in just a small kitchen of wood and fire. During the days we were there, it was very cloudy and raining a bit. Filming in the mountains can be a big challenge because the weather can change quickly. The next day I could make some nice time-lapse shots from Mount Fishtail.

After Pokhara we went to Chitwan National Park. Chitwan National Park is the first national park in Nepal. We did some filming while doing a jungle tour on the back of an elephant. This was my first and last time. I don’t like the way we people use the animals for this tourism attraction. You can see different animals, including rhinos, but for me Chitwan National Park was not the way I like to see wildlife. It is always hard to form an opinion on things like this, because on one hand the local people get a job through the tourism, but on the other hand I don’t like to see animals like elephants in captivity or just becoming a tourism attraction or form of transportation. I know this is my Western way of looking at things. However, it is up to you what you think about this matter and whether you consider it’ll stop you from visiting Chitwan National Park.

The second day we filmed a local tour and I made one of my favorite shots that day. It was taken from an older lady in Nepal. She had a beautiful face and expression, just filled with life. The next day we had to catch the flight back to Kathmandu but there was a problem. It is only a few kilometers from Chitwan to the Bharatpur airport. But there was a strike in Nepal so there weren’t any taxis driving. The only way to go to Bharatpur airport was by horse and carriage. This was one of the most fun ways to go to an airport. 10

When we arrived in Katmandu we went to must-have-been Bhaktapur. Bhaktapur is the home of traditional art and architecture, historical monuments and craft works. It is a pleasure to film this place and to walk around the small historical streets with a different local scene in every house. From pottery to a butcher that was selling cow meat at the street in front of his house with the cow head just lying next to him. It was an amazing journey through this special country. Even making my way through customs was fun. The people are friendly even when they are checking your bag. Of course a large camera asks for more attention but a nice chat with the officer made me smile. At so many places I meet lovely people and this was the same in Nepal. I always get the question of when I’ll be coming back. It is hard to answer this because there are still so many places I like to return to. But Nepal is definitely a country I hope to visit again some day! Namaste Nepal!

Cas de Zeeuw and Jesper Buijvoets
Cas de Zeeuw and Jesper Buijvoets went to Cambodia to travel. “The capital felt like one big trip,” Cas explains. “Traffic was chaos with an average of seven deaths each day, everybody was corrupt, there was child prostitution, drugs everywhere. People sold eggs with baby chickens inside.” Jesper laughs at the memory. “When an accident occured, people would look at their car before checking if the victim was okay. The history was very tangible: people didn’t smile, until we smiled at them.” Though their first thought was to get

They met a motodop (tuk-tuk driver), named Dara. “He was awesome, he showed us around and we bought him fertilizer for his rice plant.” Cas explains that Dara was the one who inspired them to make a documentary. “We wanted to come back for more.” 18

So one year later they returned, with a Sony XM2 Handy-cam. Through their grandmother they found a translator who was also their car driver. “It was ridiculous, we wanted to do so much,” Jesper says. “Our idea was to follow a few motodops on the street, reporting their daily lives. We visited Dara, went to the prison for more insight in the history of Cambodia. We interviewed Ou Virak, who later became a front man for human rights. It was everything all in one. Looking back it was more research than a real documentary.” Ou Virak

nominated at ArtOlive, the largest art gallery in The Netherlands. Another year later, Cas and Jesper went back East once more. Inspired by their previous documentary they decided to make one about Ou Virak. They still carried no more than a handy-cam. ‘No

“That wasn’t what we liked best though,” Cas emphasizes. “We also did a short repo on Dara, whom we also visited the second time. His wife had left him and we followed him in his search to find her. It turned out to be a crazy trip. We found his wife; she told us Dara had been beating her and gambling away her money. It is those shorter films, which are created while you are there, that we love.”
Not surprisingly, Cas and Jesper are still filming, but now they are shooting original video clips with live music on creative location. Short indeed. SENSU is the name of their company and recently their shifting more towards marketing strategies, supported by film. The handy-cam made way for a Canon DSLR 5D.

Documentaries
are still on their list,
but with a different approach. The difference? “Preparation. More research. Better sound. Edit on the scene. Shorter movies.” They can go on and on about their experience and a sniggering sounds as their very first documentary plays on YouTube. “I would do it again, right now, if someone asked me to.” Cas says. “Filming a documentary makes you part of something, gives you a peek into someone’s life. I would like to do some repos in the city, shoot short portraits of people, food stalls. In fact, we’re going to London. This inspired us. We’ve decided to shoot some short films there.”

3. Tokyo Tower (based on the Eiffel Tower) is a communications and observation tower located in Shiba Park, Minato. At 333 metres (1,093 ft), it is the second-tallest artificial structure in Japan. We made a time lapse from Tokyo Tower at afterglow when they turn 24

4. Tokyo Imperial Palace is the main residence of the Emperor of Japan. It is a large park-like area located in the Chiyoda area of Tokyo, close to Tokyo Station, and contains several buildings. Including the main palace, the private residences of the imperial family, an archive, museum and administrative offices. The buildings are beautiful to capture, especially the typical roofs make the architecture amazing. From the outside around the canals you’ve also got some good views.

HamaRikyu gardens is a traditional Japanese garden, with a modern skyline in
the background. It’s a nice place to visit and while you’re there take some shots from the garden with the contrasting skyscrapers in the background. You have to pay an entrance fee and the garden is bound to opening and closing hours: 9:00am until 5:00pm. We were confronted with those hours when we tried to make a sunset time lapse video. Don’t forget to visit Nikko: a beautiful traditional Japanese village with national park covered in waterfalls, lakes and mountains. Nikko is easy to reach from Tokyo by train and definitely worth a visit to capture some beautiful Shinto Shrines. It is perfect for a day trip to walk around and to see, experience and capture some amazing Japanese culture. Eco project of the
Month The Ocean Cleanup Millions of tons of plastic debris are polluting world’s oceans eternally. Plastic reaches the oceans mostly from land through rivers and waterways, and then accumulates in 5 areas of high concentration, called gyres.Not only does it directly kill hundred-thousands or even millions of aquatic animals annually, its fouling may spread harmful algae and other invasive species, and furthermore serves as a transport medium for pollutants (including PCB and DDT), accumulating in the food chain. Plastic pollution costs governments, companies and individuals millions of dollars in damages per year, due to loss in tourism, vessel damages and (inefficient) beach clean-ups. The ultimate solution to plastic pollution is clear; we need to close the tap, by ending our reliance on disposable plastic items/packaging, we need proper waste management globally, and we need to become aware of the problems our garbage is creating.It will require drastic changes on legislative, industrial and individual levels of society. However, even if we close the tap, we need to get out what’s already in the oceans. We’ll need a combination of both worlds, and we’ll need them soon.

The city has a relaxed atmosphere and if you have little time Helsinki is a nice city trip destination. Maybe you can’t compare it with cities like London, Barcelona, Amsterdam or Prague but in combination with Tallinn you got a lovely city trip destination. Inside Helsinki cathedral
Walking through the city center and around Helsinki Harbor you get to experience the city with its massive cruise ships, arriving and leaving. From our hotel downtown Helsinki we could just walk to the ferry terminal. Everything is close by. The city has some nice parks and beautiful old historical building and houses. Along the harbor you can get to higher set areas to take some good shots from the harbor.
Helsinki cathedral (the Lutheran Cathedral) is definitely one of the highlights to visit and to capture. This scenic white church with its tall, green dome surrounded by four smaller domes, the building is in neoclassical style. From the Senate Square in front of the Helsinki cathedral you can get a good view. This square is filled with tourists most of the time.

T Another beautiful cathedral is the Uspensky Cathedral. The Cathedral is set upon a hillside on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking the city. This stunning building is very captivating. We made an amazing time lapse from the top of the Cathedral with clouds moving by in the sky above. Helsinki is a surprisingly interesting city. Just walk around and you see so much more to capture. We had too little time to spend there.
From Helsinki we took the ferry to Tallinn. It is just a short cross over, that takes about two hours. When you arrive in the harbor of Tallinn you see plenty of historical buildings.

TA L L I N N Tallinn is the oldest capital city in
Northern Europe Next to a modern part of the city you’ll find the old town, which is truly amazing to walk around in and capture. Tallinn’s Old Town is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the old town you’ll find many spots to capture the historical buildings, like the St. Nicholas’ Church, St. Olaf ’s Church, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Kiek in de Kök and many more. The funny thing is that while you take photos or shoot in the old town you will spot local people wearing clothes from the back in the days, to entertain the tourists.

The Indian Pacific
Dream Journey The Indian Pacific – from Sydney to Perth Traveling from one side of Australia to the other by train, while discovering the country’s most popular cities and lesser known villages, makes a great dream journey and one that TravelTelly
