San Blas Islands, Panama

Dear traveler, I am writing this introduction of the already 4th TravelTelly magazine at a magical and beautiful place in our world, the San Blas Islands in Panama. I hope that our readers are also at some amazing place or planning a new journey, to capture some incredible moments and cultures which will make you appreciate life and the world we are living in even more! Saying this, I realized after seeing this video, that it is so important to treat this world the best way we can! Our consuming culture and all the rubbish we leave behind is a huge problem, and we can only enjoy this world if we take care of it. Together with the TravelTelly team we decided to start a new recurring section in our magazine. The topic will be about eco projects and initiatives around the world, which all try to make a better and cleaner planet. This way we hope you all get inspired to do your own small part of making this a cleaner world! Are you a travel photographer/videographer and would you like to be interviewed by TravelTelly? Contact us and maybe we will promote you and your work in one of our future magazine issues. Safe, clean and happy travels to you! Johannes Oppewal CEO TravelTelly

A three hour drive from san JosÊ will bring you to Jaco, a little surftown on the Atlantic side of Costa Rica. You can take the local busses or shuttle busses, like we did. The shuttle busses go to many different place close by a hotel near the airport. Jaco is a nice place to relax and to do some surfing. It was great to start at the beach, before heading to our first real stop to do some wildlife filming. Of course we made some shots in Jaco, but because there were no big waves at that time, we couldn’t make any surfing shots.

Manual Antonio National Park We stayed in Quepos, which is a small town near Manual Antonio National Park. Along the road from Quepos to Manual Antonio NP, you find many different places to stay at. With the local bus (which is the cheapest way of traveling. it is less than half a dollar one way), you can easily get to the national park. The entrance fee is $10,-. Don’t expect a huge park, but there is still enough to see. Be on time, so that you can visit the park before the large groups come in and make lots of noise. Having said this, many animals don’t mind people and are used to seeing them around. Often the sloths are just sleeping. But for us video/photographers we like to have the best place to film/photograph from and we like to stay there for a while, to get the best shot possible. Animals that you might see in Manuel Antonio

include capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, different kind of birds, sloths and last but not least raccoons. Next to seeing wildlife, the national park has some beautiful beaches to offer, where you can enjoy a relaxed day in the sun, ...or can’t you?!

Be aware of pick pocketing!! When visiting Manuel Antonio NP, be aware of pick pocketing. It’s not your money that will get stolen, but your food. The raccoons are often found on the beach searching for food, and they don’t mind getting into your bag to look for it! We enjoyed this experience because it felt like we were in nature and people just have to make sure that their bags are closed and that they know where their belongings are. Please don’t feed the raccoons. Watch the video we made, when raccoons are on the move to find some local food vimeo.com/59880245

Bike tour In Quepos we met Marcelo Figueroa, who started his cycling around the world tour in El Salvador and now he was heading to South America. From there he will travel to Africa or Europe. If he makes it to Amsterdam, we will try and do an interview with him. TravelTelly likes these kind of brave hearts, who like to explore the world in their own ways. Maybe Marcelo will come across your country and you can help him with whatever he might need! This is one of the slogans we found on his website “Many dreams could come true if only you believe in them.” And TravelTelly really believes this to be true, so we wish Marcelo all the best and we hope to see him again. If you want to know more about him and his journey, check out his website: www.5cub.blogspot.com.

Bocas del Toro For a couple of days we visited the islands of Bocas del Toro. This laid back island group is another good place to relax at and to do some diving, snorkeling an making some tropical shots. We flew with Air Panama from Bocas del Toro to Panama City. This is a one hour flight and the easiest way to quickly get to Panama City. Take care of your camera bag because the hand luggage boot is way too small. Let the staff know you are carrying a camera and they will take care of it. View skyline Place: taken from the old town Month: February 2013 Sunset: 6:30 PM It was hard for us to get a good spot to film the skyline, because of all the work they are doing around the boulevard. But if you take your time you can find a place in the old town and you can still have an awesome view of the Panama skyline.

Panama City

Panama is one of the biggest metropolitan cities in Central America. It has a beautiful skyline and when they finish all the work around the boulevard, it will give you a great view of the skyline as well. Panama can be divided into 2 areas. The area with high skyscrapers which is more modern and the area around the old centre with its historic buildings. To discover both areas of the city, you can walk along the shore over the boulevard and walk from the modern city centre to the historic centre. The boulevard itself is also a must visit, as people are doing sports, relax and enjoy each other’s company. It’s a lovely place to walk around and to experience the city life. When the boulevard is finished, we definitely want to come back to see and experience the Panama City life again. In the old town you can immerse yourself into the authentic city life, with small markets where you can buy your souvenirs.

Unfortunately, there are some things you just can’t control. First of all, the weather. The great thing was that we did have more then enough deep powder like snow. Great for off piste! Travel Apps Every month, we will describe a couple of useful apps in this section.

Tripomatic Free (in the App Store and Google Play) – Trip planning you’ll love. Tripomatic is a great App to have when you’re going places, but don’t know what to go see and do yet. Just type in the city you’re visiting and the amount of days that you will spend there, and the App will automatically make a list of attractions and places that you should visit within these days. You won’t have to go to a tourist centre or buy a travel guide, when you already know what the highlights and tourist attractions of that city are, within just a couple of seconds. Another great feature of this App is the fact that you can look on the map of the city and see photos of all kinds of attractions and add them to your own list. Add them by day, category or save your plan by transportation. Many options available and when you’re done you can even print it out. Planning your trip has never been so much fun! tripomatic.com

Vine Free (in the App Store and later Google Play) – Twitter’s newest way to gain interest and put a different spin on Tweeting. The Instagram of video, allows users to create a six second video loop and post it to Twitter or Facebook. We think this app could be very useful for all kinds of companies, but we will discuss Vine for the travel industry and for travel photo/ videographers, and give tips about the way they can use it. So take a look at our site TravelTelly.com Find the Vine app here Vine.co

1. Times Square The most famous hotspot in NYC is of course Times Square. This busy and crowded place is great to film, from many directions. If you start filming at the end of the day, you have the best light and you can also get some evening shots with all the neon lights.

2. Brooklyn Bridge One of the most famous bridges in the world, the Brooklyn Bridge. Take some shots from the East River Piers. You can find the piers behind the Manhattan Heliport. (If you want some amazing shots from above Manhattan, you can take the helicopter sightseeing tour, something we would really like to do next time).

3. Downtown Manhattan Walk through Manhattan. There are so many places from where you can shoot some nice videos, like the Financial District or Central Park. Just buy a metro ticket and walk around.

4.

Statue of Liberty The city’s highlight that you cannot miss, is the Statue of

Liberty. You can take a ferry to Liberty Island, but because of hurricane Sandy they are still busy restoring it. Read more about the restorations here: www.nps.gov/stli/afterhurricane-sandy.htm They also closed down Ellis Island. We made some nice shots from Government’s Island, a good alternative.

Eco project of the

Month

Not far from Cancun, Sowa began constructing his first island in 1998. Collecting empty plastic bottles, plywood and bamboo he’d find on the beach, he built up the island until a two story house and three beaches arose, with sand from a build up near the shore that was otherwise dredged to let boats through. Through an ambitious Kickstarter campaign, Sowa hopes to expand the island, and launch it out into the lagoon. Further, Sowa hopes to sail Joysxee around the world, and teach visitors that trash can be treasure and even become paradise.

Exploring

SHANGHAI through our

camera lenses

Feeling safe with all you camera gear in a large and crowded metropolitan city like Shanghai, is always an adventure. When you first arrive you never really know what to expect, this is also part of traveling. But for us and many others with us, it feels really good when you finally find that safe place from where you can take amazing photos/videos freely. Next to feeling safe, Shanghai has everything you are looking for when you want to film the Chinese urban city life, like the classic buildings in Yuyuan Garden. It is a real tourist hotspot, so it will be crowded, but you can take some nice shots from old Shanghai with in the background the new modern skyscrapers. And people told us that you can get the best dumplings there, the perfect way to celebrate a good shoot. You can easily find your way via the good metro system that Shanghai offers and it isn’t expensive. It is the easiest way to find your way in this huge city.

One of the best places to go and film in Shanghai is Nanjing Road in the evening and walk to the Bund. Nanjing Road is a modern street, which in the evening turns into a street full of neon lights. Such a lovely place to take some photo/videos at during

Nanjing Road

the day as well as in the evening. Next to this street, we found some more typical Chinese streets, close to Nanjing Road, with some old Chinese street signs. So try to look for other places than the main street as well. Often you will find the best shots away from the beaten track. ☺

Side street Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road and the Bund are easy to combine because they’re found in the same direction. The Bund is a large and lively boulevard, where many tourists and locals go to get a view of the impressive skyline. Because it’s such a crowded place, it can be hard to find a spot for you to film from, as you don’t want people touching your tripod when you’re filming. If someone knows another good place to film the Skyline from, please share it with us!

The Bund TravelTelly.com

Even though it was so crowded, we still made some really cool (time lapse) skyline shots. Notice: when it gets dark, it takes some time before all the lights of the buildings are on. But it is pretty awesome to see this change happening in the city, especially when the lights of the Oriental Pearl Tower (TV tower) are on when taking a time lapse video. Watch our shot here. The Jing‘an Temple is one of the most famous temples in Shanghai. It is located on the West Nanjing Highway, the hustle and bustle area of the city. This beautiful Buddhist temple is located between the modern skyscrapers. A nice place to go and see many (normally busy) Chinese people praying and burning incense. Opening Hours: 7:30am - 5:00pm.

Incense jing’an temple

The Lujiazui Shanghai area is the perfect spot to shoot photos/videos of the Lujiazui Circular Pedestrian Bridge. Traffic and people come together on this bridge, which can make a nice time lapse. From here you also have a nice view of Shanghai’s many skyscrapers and of the Oriental Pearl Tower. Filming during the morning at the Zhongshan Park was definitely one of our highlights when filming in Shanghai. The local staff with whom we were working, told us to visit Zhongshan Park in the early morning.

Travel Book of the month

‘100 Countries 5000 Ideas’ is one of our personal favorites, when it comes to must have travel books. This is the perfect book to have when trying to decide where to go for your next trip. The book describes 100 countries and their highlights. There are over 250 images and maps found in this book and as always, National Geographic only shows us incredible photos. Next to that, it gives expert advice (pros, cons, safety, etc.), traveler’s notebooks (climate, language, currency, etc.) and several charts (weather, costs, lifestyle, etc.). ‘100 Countries 5000 Ideas’ helps you to decide which country to visit next. It gives all the basic information needed, including the country’s most popular cities, landscapes, festivals, coasts, excursions, wildlife and cultural heritage. When you decide which country you want to visit, you still need to buy a normal travel guide though, as this book only gives you ideas. The charts are really handy, as you can easily find out what kind of weather you can expect, and search for destinations to match your money, lifestyle or interests. The only ‘negative’ thing about this book is that it is focused on the United States of America and the United Kingdom. This means that ‘time to destination’ for example, is described from the UK/ USA to destination. Where to go. When to go. What to see. What to do. Hurtigruten (Norway)

Dream Journey The Hurtigruten is probably well known by European residents, but not as much by the rest of the world. It is a cruise along the coastline of Norway and takes about 7 days, starting in Bergen and ending in Kirkenes (or the other way around). During
