Words: Tim Gibson

Issue 105: Oct 2022 www.thelandy.co.uk BuyersAdventure WorkshopProducts VehiclesNews

IT’S TIME, THEN, FOR THE ANNUAL GIBSON SUMMER HOLIDAY. Ten days of blissful nothingness on a caravan site in deepest Dorset. No work, apart from the odd column to file. But mainly just a load of not doing very much while the kids alternate between bickering and mutual affection and my wife and I argue about the escalating price of Texas BBQ Pringles (as in: ‘Are they really worth the money?’ – to which the answer is yes, obviously). We play a game, the boy and me, as we career around the lanes. Helps the time pass, what with all the holiday traffic slowing things down. Indeed, nowadays, we have quite a few games in our repertoire. The list grows each year. It started with a game of my invention, called ‘Can You Discover the Truth?’, which is now so advanced as to have its own jingle and everything. It involves me inventing a murder or similar grisly misdemeanour, giving various sceneof-crime clues, and the kids and Mrs G gradually working out whodunnit. It’s a lot more fun than it sounds, actually. But the latest game we’ve come up with is a variation on something we’ve done for years. The name isn’t locked in, but let’s call it ‘Dream Car Configurator’ for now. You can probably guess what’s involved: we take it in turns to specify a feature of our dream car, gradually building it in our imagination as we Typically,go. we start with the tyres and work our way up, via suspension and axles, into the diffs and general underbelly area, via the transmission and engine, pop out the front and back for winches and reinforced bumpers, along the sills for rock sliders or similar, quick detour through the interior, then up to the roof. Much the method I used to deploy in the early 2000s when interviewing hairy-arsed off-roaders about their modified trucks, in fact. Which just goes to show that the skills you learn in your 20s stay with you for life. Anyway, you’d be surprised at how regularly the specification changes. Every time we play, in fact, which is often more than once in a day. And when the wife and daughter get involved, there’s even more room for variation. Though, to be fair, the main thing they bring to the discussion is recommendations on colour and seat comfort. Unreconstructed, us? So we’re en route to Studland Bay and my son and I give it some welly with a retro off-road build on a 90. You know the drill: BFG Mud Terrains on steel eight-spokes, three-inch Scorpion lift, ARB Air-Lockers front and rear, Warn winches and bumpers, Safari snorkel, bash plates – the whole malarkey. An Exmoor Trim interior for comfort (maybe brown leather, suggests little sister through a face full of Pringles). Roof rack, roof-mounted lights. Et cetera, et cetera. Then, would you believe it? We only park up next to pretty much the vehicle we’ve just been describing. In the beach car park. In Dorset. For a weird moment, it’s as if God has rewarded us, a bit like those stories you hear about nuns who pray that they’re struggling to fund their orphanages then find a suitcase full of money on the doorstop. But slightly more self-serving in our case, obvs. We pause to take it all in, ogling the off-road hero beside us. And, through teary eyes, my son tells me that he’s not sad because the Defender isn’t ours. He’s just glad that such a vehicle should even exist. Which makes me think: we’re going to be OK, our species, after all. Our man in the West Country enjoys a mystical moment in a Dorset car park while holidaying with the family

Working at a John Deere dealership is bigger than just a job. It’s a passion. It’s constant growth and development. And it’s pride - pride in your community, from the first customer you serve. It’s knowing that what you do helps to feed, clothe, and shelter the world. It all starts with you.

You can’t help but have noticed that electric conversions for old Land Rovers are cropping up all over the place. Some of them are very high-end, some (like one you’ll find in a few pages’ time) aim to be down to earth – but what they all have in common is that they represent the modern world muscling in on something which a lot of us thought would always remain reassuringly old-fashioned. There’s a huge amount of Land Rover people, and car people in general, who think electric propulsion is the devil. You may well have seen the pictures on social media of that funny looking thing that smashed the hillclimb record at this year’s Festival of Speed. It was faster than any rally car, F1 car or anything else has ever been, which is surely the definition of good motorsport – but every time those pictures are shared, they’re greeted with a storm of pure hate. I’m in the minority in that I’ve actually driven an electric car. And you know what? It’s a bit like towing, or driving a left-hooker. (Or, if you haven’t done it for a while, a Defender.) To start with, it feels so unnatural that you think you’ll never get used to it. But then suddenly it’s the new normal and you forget the thing you’re driving is electric at all. It’s also a bit like the way Land Rover dragged itself into the modern world with the first Freelander. The traditionalists, and I was one, were deeply unsure, however much we wanted it to be okay. But the public loved it. So much so that whereas everything Land Rover had built up to then was basically a variation on the Series I, everything it has built since has, more or less, been a variation on the Freelander. So, the modern world is coming and it’s relentless. Just as we couldn’t hold back the tide of change that’s seen live axles and analogue engineering fall by the wayside, we can’t stop electric power from taking over. And the sooner we get used to that fact, the better. You may feel that putting a Nissan Leaf motor in an old 90 or Range Rover is basically murdert. But as time goes on, that may turn out to be the way not to kill it but to save it.

lenty of Series Land Rovers have been converted to power steering down the years. But most times, it’s happened while they’ve been getting chopped up and turned The heyday of the hybrid era is long in the past, of course, but PAS is still as desirable as ever. And now that people have come back round to the idea of keeping a Series a Series rather than plopping it on top of a Range Rover chassis that’s had a good seeing to by a grinder, adding it to otherwise standard trucks is becoming more and Dorset-based AL Services, for example, recently developed a conversion using a P38 box and Defender column – and it has just fitted its second of the year so far. Not that anyone at the company was expecting it when a customer came in asking if they could do such a thing to his truck – but as the company’s Jay Bowman says, ‘we love a challenge!’Withaneye to future maintenance and parts availability, the company used all Land Rover items wherever possible. There was just the one exception to this: ‘instead of trying to source a power steering pump, pulleys and belt,’ says Jay, ‘we are using a readily available Vauxhall electric power steering pump to keep things simple and minimal.’ The system is fitted using mounting plates which were laser-cut to AL Services’ own measurements.

AL Services’ new PAS conversion finds favour with Series owners

Having made a success of the first order, the company has since completed its second, this time on a Series III Lightweight. Here, however, the Defender column is too long, so new lower brackets needed to be fabricated in order for the steering wheel to remain in its original position – a must, as most people would agree.

Land Rover has introduced a range of luxury home charging points for owners of its plug-in hybrid models. These premium wall boxes include a hidden compartment for the cable and plug and come in a choice of no less than 96 colour and finish combinations including metal and sustainably sourced wood. Prices, when bought directly from Andersen EV, start at around £1500.

Still, it’s always nice to see a Series I showing up to steal the show. We spotted this one in the camp site early on in the day, then later on it had snuck in to an actual display – directly opposite the Show’n’Shine, which seemed cheekily appropriate. Interestingly, there’s a public byway that runs right through the middle of Santa Pod. Called Forty Foot Lane, it enters the complex from the village of Souldrop to the north-east and runs parallel to the strip itself – which is a kind of Run What Ya Brung they prob ably weren’t thinking of back in 1966 when they decided to repurpose RAF Podington for drag racing. Either way, we don’t think the Land Rover’s owner would have thought about giving it a go on the famous quarter mile. When they talk about running in the tens, after all, they mean seconds rather than minutes.

10

Dagstalgia is not normally the sort of event you would go to to see historic Land Rovers. Organised by the National Street Rod Association and held at Santa Pod Raceway, it’s a festival of all things vintage in the world of drag racing and general fourwheeled Americana. As they say, however, no man with a good car needs to be justified. And if you’re a petrolhead (or diesel, no-one’s judging) you’d certainly appreciate some of the outrgeous drag racers and street machines on display around the Pod over the weekend of the event.

IF YOU’RE READY TO TAKE THE PLUNGE and convert your Land Rover to electric power, this divorced output coupler from the ever-innovative Syncro Gearboxes allows you to do so using the EM57 motor from a Nissan Leaf. There are those whose jaws will drop at the suggestion. But with similar torque to a Tdi the moment you touch the pedal this is not to be sniffed at. Syncro Gearboxes’ adaptor is CNC machined from billet aluminium and fitted with a high speed bearing, and the chromoly flange is retained in the adapter to ensure it can’t come off. It allows you to bolt the motor’s output to a driveshaft, coupling it to an axle – or, assuming you still want four-wheel drive, your Land Rover’s transfer box.

‘WHEN YOU UST CAN’T FIND A STRONG ENOUGH TOOL to do a job on the modern Land Rover range,’ says Design and Development Engineering, ‘we will just have to make one!’ Hence this driveshaft removal for the Freelander 2, Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque. People have been known to bend hydraulic presses trying to budge these things. ‘We had some where we ended up changing the whole upright assembly, hub and shafts because they won’t come out,’ says the company. So it made the prototype which you see here during tests –which yielded excellent results. Design and Development Engineering says it reckons there must be plenty of independent Land Rover specialists that could make use of this product. Pricing remains TBA… but if you too are replacing upright assemblies because a shaft won’t budge, it won’t be long before it’s paid for itself.

The Electrogenic kit comes equipped as standard for 7.5kW AC overnight charging via a Type 2 connector, however a faster set-up can be specified as an optional extra.

ingbell-hous-ingtheisTheualoriginalretainwithequippedDefendersforunusuallyHighlyanEV,thiskittheirman-gearbox.motorboltedtoexist-clutchsoall five gears remain, as of course does reverse – as well as the full-time fourwheel drive and high and low range provided by the transfer case behind it. ‘Off-road ability is improved by the fitment of the electric motor,’ says Electrogenic. ‘With readily accessible torque and linear power delivery, it is effortless to drive even in demanding off-road scenarios. Dual-stage regenerative braking enables ultra-controlled, brake-free off-road descents. ‘Towing capability is also enhanced by the electric motor’s instant and abundant torque.’

The powertrain is also designed to be 100% maintenance-free, meaning further savings on servicing costs (as well as the associated down-time) – so with a target price of £24,000 plus VAT, the conversion can pay for itself in less than four years.

As this suggests, the kit is aimed at a very different kind of Land Rover to the millionaires’ machines often associated with electric conversions. Electrogenic says it is intended for the agricultural sector, with 18 months of testing having recently been completed at Worthy Farm, home of the famous Glastonbury Festival – where, coincidentally, Greta Thunberg recently made a surprise appearance in her ongoing campaign for sustainable living.

Following its year and a half of testing about a number of 90s and 110s at Worthy Farm, Electrogenic estimates that the conversion can be worth ‘at least £6000 in fuel costs over the course of an average year of on-farm use.’

Electric Defenders are big news – and they normally come with even bigger prices. But Oxfordshire company Electrogenic says its new drop-in conversion kit can pay for itself in four years of typical use – then play its part in keeping the vehicle healthy well into the future. The conversion, which was developed in partnership with automotive experts at Cardiff University, comes as a kit designed to be installed by a qualified mechanic. It includes an electric motor developing 120bhp and 173lbf.ft – roughly comparable figures to the Tdi and Td5 engines in most Defenders whose age now might make them suitable candidates for the work. A 52kWh battery pack is installed under the bonnet, which Electrogenic says will allow ‘100-plus miles of range on-road and considerably more when driving off-road or around a farm.’

‘The electric powertrain is designed to operate happily for decades,’ continues Electrogenic, ‘while the batteries are similarly robust: good for 200,000 miles or more, giving owners total peace of mind.’ The company’s co-founder Steve Drummond also points out the hidden benefits of instant heat on cold mornings and time saved on regular trips to fill up with fuel – and that removing diesel from a farm’s fleet can help it meet its sustainability targets. ‘This new electric conversion kit is a really exciting development for us,’ said Drummond. ‘We do high-specification conversions for road-warriors, but this kit is all about giving landowners an economic, sustainable option. It’s easy to install and uses Electrogenic’s proprietary technology.

‘It gives Land Rover Defenders an affordable new lease of life, reducing running costs while enhancing performance and drivability around the estate. It future-proofs the traditional Defender, readying it for decades of reliable, sustainable service as we enter the age of low-carbon agriculture.’

This Range Rover In Vogue is something very special. Not only is it from the first run of 1000 vehicles, it’s just been restored to factory-fresh condition – and it even has the finishing touch that’s so often disappeared…

The Range Rover In Vogue is a rare beast. But the original first thousand examples from 1981 are especially rare, with their Vogue Blue paintwork and manual gearboxes marking them out as a classic among classics. That’s what you’re looking at here. It was first registered in August 1981, six months after the In Vogue first went on sale, and it’s on sale now having spend the last four years undergoing a complete restoration. This covered the bodywork and the mechanicals alike. Starting with the former, the panels were stripped back to bare metal before being resprayed in the correct Vogue Blue – complete, of course, with the correct twin coachlines in two-tone grey. Underneath, the chassis, axles and suspension components were all stripped back to bare metal and treated with epoxy primer before being finished in epoxy satin black. The axles were rebuilt with new wheel bearings are refurbished swivels up front, while the braking system gained new calipers, discs and lines as well as a new master cylinder. When the rolling chassis was built back up, it was with new springs, shocks and bushes. The fuel tank is new too, as are the pump and sender. And under the bonnet, the high-compression V8 engine was completely rebuilt with renewed bearings, piston rings, camshaft and followers, water pump and starter motor. Inside, as well as out, the vehicle has remained exactly as it should be. Like those coachlines, the steel wheels are correct, as are the polished wooden door cappings and the plush carpeting covering the rear inner arches, boot floor, spare wheel and tool roll shroud. The In Vogue was one of the first vehicles to have air-conditioning, and this remains in place too – it even says so beneath the controls on the heater panel, just in case whoever owned it back then couldn’t believe such a thing existed. Something that doesn’t exist, normally, which set the seal on the In Vogue’s country lifestyle image, is the Brexton picnic hamper that came as part of the vehicle’s specification. Stored in the boot behind the offside rear wheelarch, it was finished to match the light brown upholstery – but four decades on, it’s all too common for fate to have separated this treasured item from the vehicle it onceGoodgraced.news, then, is that this particular In Vogue is an uncommon one. The hamper remains with it – and its contents look like they’ve hardly ever seen a polo club meet or grousebagging excursion. The cup is missing from one of the Thermos flasks, if you want to be ultra-picky – but if that’s the only thing you can find to carp about in a vehicle, you know it’s a good one. And this shows every sign of being a good one. One of the best, in fact, with a top-notch resto behind it and a Heritage certificate to verify its identity. That’ll be why it’s priced at £ 9,995; you needn’t expect the best to come cheap, and even at that money this In Vogue has investment written all over it. If this In Vogue sounds like an investment you’d like to make, drop us a line at en uiries@assignmentmedia.co.uk and we’ll forward it on

‘I have no proof to corroborate this story but mine is by far the earliest known by any Land Rover club, with number 72501. I believe there is no Land Rover Dormobile in existence with a lower number than this.’

22 Issue 105: Oct 2022 www.thelandy.co.uk BuyersAdventure WorkshopProducts VehiclesNews

There’s probably also no other Land Rover Dormobile in existence in such a time-warp condition. Not ‘time-warp’ in the usual sense used by a dodgy car dealer trying to flog you a clocked shed; it’s understood that the vehicle last turned a wheel in anger in 1989, when it was parked up in the barn that was to be its home for the next quarter of a century, and even then it was like a throwback inside.

t’s not every day that you come across a genuine, honest to good ness piece of Land Rover history. But this 1960 Series II is more than just that –it’s also a genuine piece of Dormobile history. As you can see from the pictures, it’s not in a particularly great state. And the pictures don’t show the condition of the chassis and bulkhead. But if you’re not scared of taking on a full restoration project, you could be looking at abso lute treasure here – because its owner, Duncn Ross, has decided that after almost a decade of not getting round to it, the time has come to accept that he never will. ‘I bought it with a view to restoring it as a family camper,’ he explains. ‘But as my wife keeps telling me, the kids will grow up and not want to go camp ing any more before this will happen. So facing this dilemma and a lack of time, I decided to buy a camper that has already been done.’ Whether you’d want to use it as a family camper is very much down to how you view your classics. Either way, the story behind it (which is un substantiated but certainly believable) comes via Duncan from the guy he bought it from. ‘The story I was told by the previous owner was that his father worked at the Land Rover factory,’ he explains. ‘Having heard that Martin Walter of Folkestone was about to commence building 109 Dormobile conversions, he placed an order for the very first one. The numbers reportedly started from 72500, which was for the first demo vehicle.

Stood since 1989, this 109” Series II is like a time capsule from half a decade

I

‘It certainly has been used well and clearly enjoyed by the family who owned it,’ continues Duncan. ‘The cupboards are full of period accesso ries, medicine, supplies and so on. It’s as if it was transported from the 1970s to ‘Itnow.has all the correct Dormobile bits: all the seat frames, bunk beds, cupboard, cooker, sink and tap, table and so on. The very rare original spotlights and correct roof rack are also present – along with all the right Dormobile badges.’ Make no mistake, this is a serious proposition for a restorer to take on. But the restorer in question will need to be pretty serious too.

‘The chassis is not in a good state and has been patched up many times over the years’ is Duncan’s assess ment. ‘It’s definitely salvageablebut I personally wouldn’t use it. The bulk head has been molested and patched, too, and will require significant work.’ The engine is better (although, classic vehicle purists beware, it’s a later Series III unit) and ‘the gearbox actually feels good.’ The Land Rover will come with a collection of panels to help with the job, and Duncan also has a new Richards galvanised chassis and spare bulkhead –he intends to sell these separately, but we wouldn’t imagine he’s going to object if you want to make an offer for the whole lot. To do so, think sixteen grand and a trip to Milton Keynes. ‘I have lots of things to make this project a success but time is unfortunately not one of them,’ is Duncan’s slightly rueful conclusion: to take it on and make his vision yours, turn to page 28 and you’ll find it advertised for sale.

The Series III wasn’t too dissimilar to the Series IIA in mechanical terms, keeping the same 2.25-litre engines throughout the length of its production run. In 1980, the engines switched to a more durable five-bearing crank rather than the old threebearing setup. The transmission also received syncromesh on all forward gears to make it easier to live with. They still carry the simplicity of earlier Land Rovers, but can be obtained for a fraction of the price... for now.

Pros: Master of the road. Lovely E sees one loves it Cons: Monumental running E , 101 (1972-1978) £7500-£26,000

Pros: E limitless potential and character Cons: U S had a colourful life 127 (1985-1990) £7500-£25,000

Forward Control Land Rovers are a cult within a cult. They’re a real rarity – with all the cachet, pride and immense awkwardness that comes with this status. By ‘rare’, we’re talking about less than 2500 Series IIA FCs in total. And they tended to have a very hard life, so not many have survived to tell the tale. Forward-Control models dif fered from everyday Series IIs by having heavy-duty ENV axles, but engine-wise they had the familiar 2.25 petrol and diesel lumps. So, don’t expect performance – but do expect to be given an ‘interesting’ time in the workshop…

Pros: A Land Rover like no , ’ Cons: E , Series IIA/IIB FC (1962-1971) £2500-£15,000

Only ever sold to the Army, the 101 became a cult vehicle when the time came for demob. They were flogged off at very low prices and turned into off-road toys –not something you’d do with one today, given the rarity and classic value they’ve taken on. Compared to the IIA IIB FC, the 101 is more fun thanks to its V8 engine. It’s still a military tool, though – some still have fixtures and fittings from their Army life, which adds interest. This is a vehicle for enthusiasts, though, with costs that are sky-high even by Land Rover standards.

Lightweight (1968-1984) £3500-£22,000

This is Land Rover at its best: a no nonsense workhorse that can also take you just about anywhere in the Earlyworld.90s and 110s are starting to be a real collector’s item. But you’ll likely be searching far and wide for a pristine example. These Land Rovers had coilsprung suspension, new engines and a world-beating level of rugged off-road capability.

A very early 2.25 petrol 90 is a rare thing, and a beautiful one too. But perhaps try for a 2.5 natasp diesel: they’re robust and as simple as they come.

Pros: Heritage, charm, a true classic, the original Land Rover Cons: Availability of parts, price tag on early 80s Series I (1948-1958) £5000-£75,000

Landy

The 127 was built on a special production line in Solihull which took 110 chassis and stretched them. It was designed for military and commercial users and came as a high-capacity double-cab. These days, it’s very rare to find a 127 that hasn’t been hammered, restored and/or converted, or all three. People looking for a work truck tend to go for a later 130, so the 127 is more of an enthusiast’s motor. It’s popular for homebrewed overland conversions, too. Almost all 127s have had an engine conversion by now, too. Lots to be wary of, then – but it’s a hell of a lot for your money.

The Series II/IIA has a wider stance than its predecessor and adds an extra (thin) layer of refinement. While the engines have excellent longevity, they need to have been maintained properly. Be thorough in your checks, both under the bonnet and underneath the body.

Pros: A sound investment to restore. Some now MOT exempt Cons: Bulkheads and chassis rot, springs prone to seizing Series II/IIA (1958-1971) £2500-£40,000

Pros: E E U potential for mods and restos Cons: Puny engines (V8 apart) Not many left in good condition 90/110 (1983-1990) £3000-£26,000

Pros: Not like all the other Land Rovers out there. Military background. Lovely 2.25 petrol Cons: A ’ ’ E over regular models means they command a price premium

Blast from the past

All the information you need – in one place – to buy your perfect Landy These days, a Lightweight is a precious classic Land Rover. But there was a time when the world was awash with the things, and no-one thought twice about cutting one up to create a hybrid. These home made creations used to be a common sight at off-road events, and they still come up for sale today. As is always the case when you buy someone’s second-hand off-roader, it’s a big risk with the potential for unexpected horrors to be lurking behind every corner. But some of the hybrids from back in the day were superbly made – and for whatever reason, some of the best of those were Lightweights. So were some right headbager trucks, though… The variety of build specs is just as wide, too. You’ll find them mashed on to Range Rovers, Discos and Defenders, even coiled on their own chassis. And you’ll find Tdis, V8s, Ford V6s, Perkins 4203s and who knows what else under the bonnet. If you’re brave, and good with the spanners, an old Lightweight can be like digging up buried treasure – just so long as you don’t hit a landmine first. Insure

These military vehicles can easily be distinguished from regular Land Rovers. To mimic the civvy Series machines, the Series III model built from 1972 onwards, also had its headlights switched out to the Lightweightswings.add an extra dimension to owning a Land Rover. Their military history and details mean you get a truck with more stories to tell – and that stands out from the crowd. They’re a rare breed, though – so if you find one, it could be worth keeping hold of.

Pros: Most affordable way into Series ownership. Still has the Series pedigree. Parts still widely available Cons: Not yetas desirable as the earlier Series models Series III (1971-1985) £2500-£30,000

The Series II/IIA is more affordable than a Series I, yet it still carries much of that early charm. Prices are on the increase, however, as these vehicles start to come into their own as collector’s items. A 2.25 petrol 88 would be our pick, as the diesel engines were underpowered and rather noisy.

The Series I, particularly in its 80 guise, is the most sought-after of all Land Rovers. Its engineering and design give it real charisma, but parts aren’t readily available. Restoration projects require deep pockets, but see it through and the result will be worth mega bucks. Gone are the days where you could use a Series I as an actual Land Rover. Because with restored examples changing hands for millionaire money, preservation is the aim of the game. The earlier the vehicle, the more it will be worth. The sky’s the limit – but can you really put a price on such an icon?

Pros: Off-road capability, power, overall reliability. Very well Cons: Rear chassis, premium prices, monstrous road tax on later vehicles

Pros: A proper truck with huge capabilities in every area Cons: I ’ ’ actually need that much size

The last Defenders gained modern 2. and 2.2 TDCi engines and smooth six-speed gearboxes, They still had phenomenal off-road ability and were even okay to sit in. Famously, this was the Defend er that actually had a dashboard Many people dislike the TDCi, especially the earlier 2.4, but they still change hands for huge money – especially when the likes of Kahn or Twisted have been involed. You will always pay a premium for a Puma, and a Tdi or Td5 may turn out to be a better purchase. Even then, though, look after it and you may well never see depreciation.

If the subject of the new Defender comes up in enthusiast circles, try to steer it away on to something safer. Like Brexit, for example. Much as it may infuriate purists, however, the Defender is actually a very wonderful thing. It’s kind of like an old one, only with space, comfort and equipment. The big difference is that you can’t work on it yourself. This goes for maintenance and, crucially, making modifications – a market Land Rover wants to take back and have for itself. It won’t hold its value long-term the way an original-shaper does, either. But this is still a superb vehicle.

Defender 300 Tdi (1994-1998) £4500-£40,000 When Land Rover introduced the Defender name, it was actually the 130 that changed the most. That’s because unlike the old 127, it was built on a proper chassis of its own rather than a stretched 110 frame. The advent of the Tdi engine was the making of the 130, too. At last, Land Rover could make them pull properly without returning single-figure fuel economy by using a hard-worked V8. As a result, you’ll find many more original(ish) 130s than 127s. Some are even still in service with the utility companies they were built for. If you want a Defender for overlanding, look no further.

Defender Td5 (1998-2007) £6000-£35,000

Pros: Comfort, capability, Cons: Not cheap to buy. Lacks ’ Defender (2020-on) £45,000-£110,000

The Tdi engine, which arrived with the Defender name, can last for decades if it’s looked after. Find one that’s had all its oil changes (a tall order) and it’ll go round (and round) the clock. The good thing about the earlier 200Tdi is that it’s simpler than the later 300. What you gain here you lose in refinement, but this is seen by many experts as the best Defender of them all.

The Td5 engine is arguably Land Rover’s most reliable unit and it’s a strong performer. It does lend itself to being tuned though, so watch out for abused ones and knackered examples that have been pushed beyond the limit. As with all Defenders, you’ll need a rear crossmember sooner or later – or even a new chassis.

Pros: E , forts, off-road prowess Cons: Price, electronics, TDCi engine is unloved

Cons: Lots of horrible and/or deceptive ones around

Despite having more electronics than the Tdi, a Td5 Defender can still be a DIY machine. Parts are in plentiful supply, as is specialist knowledge – and it’s one of the best Land Rovers ever.

Defender TDCi (2007-2016) £9500-£195,000

Pros: The perfect combination of tradition and modernity

Defender 130 (1990-2016) £12,500-£30,000

The LT77 gearbox in the 200 Tdi is more truck-like than the later R380, and these vehicles didn’t come with bling. Just be sure it’s an original Tdi you’re getting, not an old Discovery conversion.

Defender 200 Tdi (1990-1994) £4000-£35,000

The 300 Tdi engine is very different to the 200 unit it replaced, though the two are related. It’s much more refined and smoother to drive, though there are more electronics involved so later versions in particular are less of a DIY fix. The arrival of the 300 Tdi also brought with it the R380 gearbox. This used to have a terrible reputation for relability, but most have been put right by now and they’ve become sought after for their light clutch and better shift action. It was during the Tdi era that Defenders started getting things like alloys, too. You might even find one that’s not been off-road Pros: Strength and simplicity. P Cons: Sure to be very different to when it left the factory

Freelander 1 (1997-2006) £400-£5500

Pros: Most usable classic Land Rover, V8 power, ride quality Cons: Rust, availability of parts for early models

Pros: Cheap to buy, no big rust issues, surprisingly able off-road Cons: All sorts of things can go wrong, some very expensively

When the Evoque was launched, it signalled JLR’s intent on hitting the masses. Given that it was the company’s fastest-selling vehicle, they clearly hit the brief, even if it wasn’t for the traditional Land Rover owner. It’s actually still a capable thing off-tarmac – but it’s definitely more at home on the Nevertheless, road.itis economical by Land Rover standards and because there are so many out there, used prices are tempting. There’s a Convertible model, too, as well as three and five-door tin-tops. We say stick to the latter, and be sure to get one with WD.

The second-generation Range Rover Sport is 400kg lighter than the original, meaning it’s almost economical to run. It feels really nimble and agile on the road, too, and it comes with a range of engines giving it a brisk turn of pace. Some won’t like the flamboyant posture, while others will love it. Either way, inside the cabin it’s very nearly as luxurious as the full-fat Range Rover. The only stumbling block with such a fine motor is going to be how to pay for it. Depreciation has started to bring down the purchase price – though you’ll never run one on a shoestring.

Range Rover L322 (2002-12) £2250-£28,000

RR Sport Mk1 (2005-2013) £12,500-£25,000

Freelander 2 (2006-2015) £2000-£18,500

Pros: P , , glorious interior Cons: Marmite image. Pricey to buy and run RR Sport Mk2 (2013-on) £22,500-£160,000

Range Rover Classic (1970-96) £5000-£265,000

Pros: Decent performance and all-round dynamics Cons: A Disco 3 is more usable.

Pros: Great off-road, luxury, image, TDV8 powerplants Cons: Very complex. Huge running costs

Pros: Feels like a proper Range Rover inside Cons: Petrol engine is poor on fuel economy, even as a hybrid

The Freelander 1 is a cheap gate way into Land Rover ownership. It’s also a notable classic in its own way, as it heralded the start of the company’s modern era. It has its issues, though. The viscous coupling is expensive to replace and can be upset simply by running mismatched tyres. The 1.8 petrol used to be notorious for head gasket failures. Today’s replacements are much more robust, but a late diesel is your best bet. Even these can go calamitously wrong, though. This was a more complex car than it needed to be, and buying one for sweeties now doesn’t change that.

The interior is Land Rover’s most advanced cabin to date, with other models expected to follow the Velar in due course. But is there a whiff of style over substance? Well, it’s a very good SUV. But you don’t half pay a pre mium for those suave looks... Pros: Stylish design, chic cabin, excellent tech features Cons: Feels like an indulgence, especially at such a high price

Range Rover Velar (2017-on) £30,500-£95,000

A Mk2 Rangey in good working order is still a sensational car to own, even today. The problem is that they’re very complex and very, very good at going wrong. Air suspension failure is the norm. Head gaskets can let go. Electronics are laughably flaky. And parts can cost the earth – as will the labour bills. Perhaps worst of all, nowadays it’s very hard to find one you can be sure hasn’t spent at least part of its life being worked on by idiots Still, you’ll get a classy motor with proper off-road and towing skills. It’s becoming a classic, too, and prices are still tiny considering everything you get.

Pros: Luxury, price, a Land R ’ Cons: E B Range Rover P38A (1994-2002) £1500-£25,000 Call 0800 085 5000 or visit adrianflux.co.uk

Pros: R , , economy of diesel engine Cons: Transmissions can wear quickly if used for towing

The Mk3 Range Rover hit new heights of luxury and was more reliable than the P38. It’ll still cost a lot to run, however, and drivetrain faults and underbody corrosion are not unknown. The TDV8 engine is sublime, but you’ll pay more to get one –especially the . , though the 3.6 has all the power you need. The V8 petrol, on the other hand, is temptingly cheap. Guess why… This isn’t a DIY motor, but it certainly is a Range Rover, with brilliant off-road and towing skills. It relies a lot on electronics, but they work wonders – and the deepdown engineering is very robust.

Most Range Rovers all look the same at the front now, but the new Evoque has adopted a similiar back end to the larger Velar. It’s not just the exterior that mimics the looks of the larger vehicle, however, as the Evoque has gained the latest Touch Pro Duo tech and a hike in quality. The main highlight of the new Evoque is the fact the majority of the range is made up of mild hybrids, available with diesel and petrol engines combining to an electric motor. Only the base D150 Evoque escapes the electrifica tion, and we’d avoid it as it doesn’t have four-wheel drive.

Pros: E , , concept-car image Cons: Cramped rear seats, not as practical as a Disco Sport RR Evoque Mk1 (2011-19) £9500-£47,000

Discovery 1 (1989-1998) £800-£18,000

RR Evoque Mk2 (2019-on) £31,600-£55,000

The Freelander 2 was a mas sive improvement on the model it replaced. It’s a refined and affordable SUV with a strong engine, good equipment and a decent level of practicality. It’s become one of the most reliable Land Rovers out there, too. But do be aware of the rear diff and Haldex unit for costly outlays. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is a strong performer, though for a bargain search out one with the unpopular 3.2 petrol unit. Either way, it’s a fine SUV to drive. Prices have fallen since the production ended, too – £10,000 now gets you one worth having.

The Velar a competent cruiser and has received numerous accolades because of its particularly handsome exterior. It’s based upon the same architecture as the Jaguar F-Pace but has greater off-road ability and is available with a wide choice of engines, most of which combine good economy with usable everyday performance.

The Sport is mechanically similar to the Discovery 3 – meaning it’s a supreme off-roader as well as being a funky road ride. It doesn’t handle like a sports car, but is agile enough for an SUV. A Discovery of the same era is far more practical, however, while a full-fat Rangey has more class. The Sport is still a massively able tow barge, though, in addition to all its other virtues. You’re looking at a car which many people associate with rich chavs and criminals, however. And being based on the Discovery 3, it can’t help but share that vehicle’s reputation as a money pit.

E

The original Rangey is a classic you can use everyday – and there are people who do just that, preferring to invest new-car money in a restoration than spending it on a current model. It’s a smart policy, too. An early two-door can cost mega money, but any Classic will appreciate in value if kept in good condition –and sought-after rarities like the CSK and LSE can be a gold mine. An awful lot of Rangeys have been neglected and/or abused, and you can still buy they cheap. But if you’ve got the skills, and ac cess to parts, restoring one would be the ultimate hobby that pays.

The original Discovery was based on the Range Rover of the time, with the same 100 wheelbase and a slick body containing a spacious, flexible cabin. It was well equipped and refined, and it came with the wonderful Tdi engine. Over time, the Discovery’s epic off-road ability meant almost all of them were hammered at playdays. Lower body rust is a big killer, too. So it’s rare to find a good one now, and when you do they tend to be priced with a lot of optimism. Very early ones in tip-top condi tion are full-on classics, too. For a sound one to own, we’d look for a tidy 300Tdi. Pros: Price, practicality, parts E Cons: T ’ been doused in sea water

The current Range Rover is a majestic 4x4. All the engines in the range supply copious amounts of power, and its road manners are absolutely impeccable. It’s startlingly capable off-road, too, even if getting one muddy would feel like bad form. Most that leave the tarmac probably do so only when their owners are in the mood to blow some grouse out of the sky. Inside, the Range Rover’s cabin is superb, with sumptuous trim and cutting-edge equipment. Prices are, of course, as immense as the vehicle itself. But if you can afford it, so too is the presence a Rangey will give you.

Pros: Classy and practical cabin, all-round good to drive Cons: You can get a Defender for the price of some models

Discovery 2 (1998-2004) £1000-£12,000

The Disco 3 is an astonishing allround vehicle. It’s good on the road and capable off-road, genuinely luxurious and a giant of a tow truck, and as well as being able to seat seven adults it can be turned into a van with a totally flat rear loadThearea.Disco 4 was basically the same vehicle evolved; in the used market, it all comes down to your budget. The problem will always be maintenance costs – infamously, the timing belt is a body-off job, and rust is becoming more and more of an issue with these vehicles, too.

Discovery Sport (2015-19) £13,000-£33,000

The Disco 2 is powered by the Td5 engine, one of Land Rover’s most most reliable units ever. It drives well, too – mated to a manual box it has more guts even than the V8 option, which is surprisingly bland but predictably thirsty. Whereas the Disco 1 was prone to body rust, the D2 is fine here. Instead, its chassis rots like a carrot, especially towards the back end. Also at the back, seven-seat models had air-suspension, with all the horrors that brings. Mainly, D2 owners will tell you about rogue electronics. And leaky sunroofs. They still love their trucks, though, which says a lot.

Pros: All-round ability, stunning practicality, luxury and kit on Cons:high-speccersCambelts, handbrakes air suspension… the list goes on

The second-generation Discovery Sport arrived only four years after the first. That’s because once again, it’s related to the Evoque, which was launched several years earlier and was therefore ready for a full new model in 2019. The Disco Sport is a premium medium-si ed SUV. It’s available with seven seats and, by the standards of the competition, models with four-wheel drive offer a decent level of off-road ability. It’s a massively popular choice for the school run – and, with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid early last year, as a company car. Quality has taken a step up from the first model, with far better chassis dynamics and overall refinement. There’s a range of excellent drivetrains on offer, and the interior is a quantum leap ahead from the old model – it now feels fit to be called a Discovery, whereas the previous version was more of a Freelander. The Sport has grown into a convincing premium vehicle, and the range offers enough choices to suit anybody with the means to buy one.

Pros: Immense blend of comfort and Cons:practicalityFeelsmore like a softroader than a proper Discovery

The Discovery Sport packs seven seats into a Freelander-si ed body and dishes up an appealing all-round blend of comfort, kit and general driving manners. The third row of seats is only suitable for little ‘uns, though, and off-road it’s a Discovery in name only. It’s a more practical proposition than the closely related Evoque –and you won’t need to live with the fear of Posh Spice jokes.

Discovery 3/4 (2004-2017) £2450-£34,000

The Discovery 5 is a versatility monster. As an all-rounder, at launch it was the most capable Land Rover on sale. All the engines in the range are refined and flexible, and its chassis is remarkably supple. There’s no end of electronics working away in the background, but the effect is very convincing – as is an interior that’s very well into luxury car territory.

Pros: Seven-seat practicality. Capable enough off-road Cons: Back seats only for small mammals. Price of top models

PEOPLE KEEP SAYING the Discovery 3 is going to be the next big thing in expedition vehicles, but you still don’t see all that many of them going around. Here’s one that’s been put together for general camping and off-road use, though – which could certainly be developed further into a full overland vehicle. Up top, it has a full roof rack supporting a three-man tent and Direct x annexe, the latter complete with a ground sheet. Off-road ability comes from a Terrafirma winch, Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac all-terrains and a Safari Snorkel – as well, of course, from the mere fact that it’s a Discovery 3. Talking of that, the 2.7 TDV6 engine has had a new turbo and EGR valves, the suspension has had a new compressor and the handbrake module has been replaced by a main dealer. Quite a few of the normal boxes both crossed and ticked there,Inside, then.this is a lower-spec Discovery S model so instead of leather the seats are clad in good, tough fabric. It’s rather a rarity, too, in that it’s a manual one, which you may well consider to remove one layer of the potentially ruinous complexity for which the Disco 3 became known. There’s a full set of window blinds to keep it private in there – and even though this wasn’t a fancy model, it still has cruise, climate, parking sensors and heated seats. With 185,000 miles on its clock, this is not exactly what you’d call a spring chicken. But it’s been cared for the way many lower-mileage examples haven’t, and at £6000 you might well be able to see yourself having the sort of adventures its owner built it for. Located in Nottingham, it’s advertised opposite.
