x a l l i h Just C 10 Tips for Calming Holiday Chaos By Tiffany Doerr Guerzon

The holidays are supposed to be a magical time of family togetherness and love. But so often--especially for parents of young children--the holidays end up being stressful instead of joyful. The inevitable stretched budgets, packed calendars, and over stimulation can be a recipe for disaster. But with a little planning and preparation, you can minimize frustration and maximize joy this year.

Think about what you really want. Sit down with a pen and paper and write down your vision of an ideal holiday. Not the presents you hope to give or receive, but what you want to experience and feel. Is it a joyful feeling when your kids open their gifts? Is it a warm, peaceful feeling of cuddling with the kids in front of the tree? Or maybe you just want a special sit down dinner with extended family? Once you have an idea of what will make you happy during the holidays, try to plan for it. Trim that schedule! Oh how quickly that calendar fills starting in November, especially if you have more than one child. Look over the invitations and see if there are any you can decline.Get older kids involved in planning family outings to narrow down what is important for each family member. Then, review what you usually do during the season. Has seeing The Nutcracker been a tradition, but now your kids are no longer interested? Replace that outing with something everyone will enjoy. Once you’ve figured out what everyone wants to 6

do, block out a few days or evenings in which you can stay home. Mark those on your calendar as you would any other required event. Use that time to recharge.

Eat well. When life gets hectic, healthy eating is often the first thing to go-- quickly followed by dropping blood sugar and rising stress levels! If you have time, prepare a few meals to keep in the freezer for those nights you are too tired to cook. Or, before you hit the drive-thru of a fast food restaurant (again) consider instead picking up a rotisserie chicken and a bag of steamable veggies from the grocery store. December might even be the perfect time to try out a meal service such as Blue Apron. Pack snacks--for both you and the kids. Fill a bag with non perishable snacks and bottled water and put it in the car for the inevitable time you get stuck in traffic and you or the kids get hungry. Choose convenience whenever possible. Is it really necessary to bake cookies from scratch for decorating when refrigerated dough is readily available? Will your kids remember decorating cookies with you or that you made the dough from scratch? Make a gift budget. I know, easier said than done. But making and sticking to a budget will make your new year much less stressful. Figure LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

out who you will be giving to a make a list, then divide that by the dollar amount you can afford to spend. Do you really need to buy your coworkers or your kids’ and teachers gifts from the mall, or would they be just as happy with a plate of cookies or a card?

Keep your usual schedule when you can. Keep routines in place whenever possible. Both for you and the kids! Children thrive on routine and although there will some upset in nap and dinner schedules, try to schedule activities around the kids. Your routine is important too! From the cup of coffee consumed in peace while reading the news before the household awakes to dipping into a favorite novel at bedtime, routines keep parents sane, too. Minimize the cooking. The holiday dinner can be a huge stressor, especially if you are the cook! Consider purchasing a prepped, readyto-cook holiday dinner with all the trimmings at your local grocery store. Most major chains off a variety of meals such as ham, turkey or prime rib, often for as much (or less!) that you would pay when buying the ingredients to cook your own. You can still make Grandma’s special pie recipe or your families traditional stuffing to go with the meal, but think of how much easier the holiday will be if that is all you make from scratch! Divide and conquer the shopping. Make a list and coordinate with your spouse. When the Christmas rush is on, it’s so easy to forget to buy for someone on your list, or forget what you’ve already purchased and buy too much. Divide and conquer! Trim the card list. Are you still sending holiday cards to your friend from college who you haven’t heard from since graduation? Or do you get a batch of “no longer at this address” cards back in your mailbox every year? Cut your card list to those who you really want to communicate with to save both time and postage. Speaking of postage… There is nothing wrong with electronic cards, especially if you are short on time and money. Folks really just want to know that you are well and see pictures of the kids. Sending a general greeting that includes pics of the kids is easy and free. By doing even a few of these things, you can simplify and smooth your holiday season this year. Maybe you can even enjoy it! Tiffany Doerr Guerzon is a freelance writer and the mother of three children. Her work has been featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul, the Christian Science Monitor, Brain, Child, Motherly and over 70 regional parenting magazines across the US and Canada. Being A Better Adult

Kid Behaviors Adults Could Do Better By Cheryl Maguire

Please use your inside voice. It’s bedtime. Eat your broccoli. Wear your jacket.

1. Just Say No Most toddlers favorite word is no. A child will cross their arms and stand their ground shouting no until they turn blue and pass out. Adults do not have the same ease in using the word. Why is saying no hard for adults? According to an article in Psychology Today Magazine there are many reasons adults struggle with using the word no. Often people want to belong to a group so they may say yes to receive approval from others. Another reason a person may resist using the word no is fear of upsetting another person. Lastly, a person may want to be helpful and feel valued so they reframe from saying no. How can adults just say no? Psychology Today Magazine says the word no should feel empowering. By practicing and remaining diplomatic most people will improve their ability to say no to others. Envisioning how easy it is for a child to say no may also help you realize you can do it as well.

bites of their dinner they respond with, “can I only eat three bites?” Children have little fear or resistance to negotiating with adults or other kids. Why is negotiating hard for adults? An article on Salary. com states, “our research found nearly one-fifth of workers never negotiate after they’re offered a job.” After interviewing 2,000 people about why they don’t like to negotiate Salary. com found the biggest reason was the fear of losing their job. Other answers were people felt they would seem greedy or they wouldn’t get a raise, anyway. In a Money Watch article by Jeff Haden, he states, “I hate negotiating, mostly because a negotiation often feels confrontational.” Heidi Grant Halvorson Ph.D. shares this viewpoint by stating, “A negotiation is an experience that is rife with conflicting motivations.” How can adults negotiate better? Negotiating is an important skill since it enables you to earn a higher salary or pay less for a car or house. This skill can help you in both your personal and business relationships. Similar to saying no, you will feel empowered when you are able to negotiate effectively. In the Psychology Today article “How to Negotiate Like a Lawyer” Ruth Lee Johnson J.D. offers five strategies you can use to improve your negotiating skills which are to prepare, plan, assert and implement the solution. She stresses the importance of listening to the other person and doing your research before the negotiation.

2. Ability to Negotiate If you tell your child their bedtime is 8 pm, often they will ask how about 8:30 pm? Or if you suggest they eat five more

3. Play Creatively If a child sees a basket of dolls or Legos, they have the ability to play creatively for hours. Sometimes a cardboard box

As a parent you have probably said at least one of these statements more than a hundred times to your child. Adults are always telling kids how to behave. But there are times when kids do things better than us. Here are five behaviors adults can learn from kids:

is enough inspiration for a child to pretend to be in a car, train or plane. As people age, they no longer use pretend play. Why is creative play challenging for adults? In an article on Psych Central Margarita Tartakovsky, M.S. discusses why adults struggle with creative play. She states, “Play for adults is perceived as unproductive, petty or even a guilty pleasure.” This leaves adults feeling as if the creative play is unnecessary yet she found play helps people to feel happy. How can adults play creatively? Tartakovsky suggests you can add play into your life by changing how you think about it and give yourself permission to play. She recommends using your childhood memories of play to reconnect with the idea. You can also play with your child or other children you know.

4. How to Succeed If you have witnessed a child learning to walk or learning to ride a bike, you will see that despite falling down, they continue to get up until they mastered the skill. Children don’t allow failure to hinder them from trying again until they succeed. Why is it difficult for adults to succeed? Most success is the result of many failed attempts such as mastering a new skill. In a Psychology Today, article Guy Winch Ph.D. discusses how when people fail they can believe they are helpless and unable to achieve your goal. How can adults succeed? Winch suggests the best way to overcome failure is to focus on the aspects you can control. After you are able to figure out what isn’t in your control, try to

improve it by taking a class or preparing and practicing for the next time you attempt the skill.

5. Finding Humor in Everything Children laugh at almost anything. If an adult speaks in high pitched voice, stumbles over a shoe or mispronounces a word a child will erupt into a fit of laughter. It is easy to make a child laugh. If you ask any comedian, they will probably tell you it’s not as easy to elicit laughter from an adult. Why is difficult for adults to laugh? People may hold back with laughing due to a fear of offending others. Robert Provine, Ph.D. author of the book Laughter states that adults laugh less than children due to the fact they play less. How can adults laugh more? Provine found people are more likely to laugh when they are with other people as opposed to being alone. You can also read humorous books, watch funny TV shows or spend time with your child since laughter can be contagious. It can be frustrating to hear your child say no to you or negotiate a later bedtime, but next time it happens notice how easy it is for them to do these behaviors. It can inspire you to do the same with your relationships. Cheryl Maguire holds a Master of Counseling Psychology degree. She is married and is the mother of twins and a daughter. The Timeless Ties That Bind 8 Meaningful Thanksgiving Traditions To Try This Year By Shannon Dean

Many feel that Thanksgiving is the best of the winter holidays since it focuses on family and gratitude without the pressure of commercialism. Taking part in yearly rituals gives families a sense of stability, identity, and connection. Sharing repetitive but flexible traditions gives families an annual opportunity to demonstrate what makes them unique. This exchange can be vital, since experts believe that the regular participation in rituals like Thanksgiving contribute to the well-being of the entire family. A study by the Society for Research in Child Development concluded that parents who had pleasant memories of family traditions reported more positive interactions with their own children, who might one day continue this cycle. Now that we’ve established the importance of Thanksgiving, here are 8 easy, meaningful, and inexpensive rituals meant to facilitate family connections.

Turn Off Electronics: Most of us eagerly anticipate intimate conversations with extended family. Because it can be rare to have everyone in one place, we desperately want to catch up and to connect, but electronics often interfere. A study out of Virginia Tech concluded that technology at the table “has the potential to divert individuals from faceto-face exchanges, thereby undermining the character and depth of these connections.” To avoid these distractions, try for a technology-free table this year. Simply say, “Let’s try turning off the electronics for a few hours,” and watch the verbal conversations flow. Share Dishes That Celebrate Your Family’s Identity: Although it’s easy to stick with turkey and traditional sides, it can also be valuable to share dishes that are personally meaningful. Many families have certain specialities that are served every Thanksgiving. Often, the foods reflect the family’s heritage or experiences. 10

Our Kids Magazine | November 2018

Don’t shy away from special ethnic or regional dishes that reflect guests’ identity and personal preferences. Consider cooking such dishes with children so that they can eventually pass these specialities down to their own families. The “perfect” Thanksgiving menu varies from family to family.

Use (And Add To) Family Heirlooms: Many hosts serve Thanksgiving dinner on “the good china,” so that the meal is particularly special. Some families embrace mismatched but vintage pieces that are specific to the holiday. Those who don’t start with a complete set will find that building a larger collection is relatively easy and inexpensive. Scouring auction sites, garage sales, and thrift stores will often turn up matching pieces or items that will compliment what is currently in use. It’s rewarding to add to your collection as your family grows. It’s also thoughtful to make the pieces available to whoever hosts Thanksgiving. Remember Absent Family Members: It can be therapeutic and respectful to remember family members who can’t attend Thanksgiving or who have passed away. Many families choose to honor absent family members with gestures like lighting a candle, leaving an open chair or place setting, serving favorite dishes, or saying a special blessing. It’s important that all family members know that despite any loss or absence, they will always be held up by generational family bonds. Experts stress that although it can be important to use discretion if grief is fresh, not talking about an absent family member ensures that they are really lost. It is the sharing of memories that keep them close. Tell Family Stories: An easy way to bring meaning to dinner conversation is to ask family members to share stories. Doing so ensures that mealtime topics remain positive and that LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

family members gain new insights about one another. Adults can begin this process by asking open-ended questions like, “What was your favorite birthday?” Or, “What personal attribute is most important to you?” The answers may lead to an intimate peak inside a family member’s personality, values, and experiences.

Provide An Ornament, Craft, Or Game Table For The Kids: Even the most engaged and well-behaved children enjoy entertainment or activities meant just for them. One easy and efficient way to accomplish this is to set up an activity, craft, or game table. Many companies offer craft kits that have all needed supplies. Some families encourage kids to make handmade Christmas ornaments or winter holiday decorations that can be sent home with guests, since many families decorate their homes the day after Thanksgiving. Consider offering games for children who would prefer an alternative to crafts. Value Repetitive Rituals, But Remain Flexible And Open-Minded: As valuable as repetitive traditions can be, change is inevitable. Sometimes, unforeseen events or a shift in circumstances may mean that the food, the people, and the activities may be different from year to year. However, an open-mind and a spirit of acceptance ensures that any changes needn’t alter the true purpose and enjoyment of the holiday. Add To Growing Displays Of Gratitude: Many families make a yearly habit of sharing one thing that each person is thankful for. Although some families choose to share verbally, others will create a thankful tree, a gratitude chain, or a tablecloth of thanks that can be added to every year. It can be heart-warming to watch these displays change over time. Placing an emphasis on recurring sentiments of gratitude keeps the focus on what is truly important – on giving thanks, on sharing important traditions, and on encouraging familial connections meant to endure for generations. None of these tips are particularly time consuming or expensive, but experts agree that encouraging deep, ongoing family relationships is worth the effort. Dr. Marie Hartwell-Walker, author of Tending The Family Heart Through The Holidays says, “It is important to be reminded that we are part of something bigger than our individual selves; that our relationships with people are more important than our relationships with avatars; and that our time with our families is just as important as time with co-workers and friends.” Author Shannon Dean is the mother of two sons. She enjoys writing about the health and well-being of families. Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

Happy Thanksmas

How to Have a Thanksmas Celebration By Kerrie McLoughlin

I don’t know about you, but for me, the cooking, cleaning, shopping, dressing up, traveling, rushing, stressing, and going into debt are just a few of the joys to look forward to from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day. I vote we all take a day in between all that chaos to have a low-key Thanksmas celebration. Invite who you want! Eat what you want! Wear what you want! Now that I’ve got you all riled up, let me teach you how!

and pick up leftover Thanksgiving goodies like plates, cups, napkins and decorations on the cheap. While you’re there, grab some red and green plastic utensils, then find a plastic or fabric Christmas tablecloth (ask someone you know if you don’t have one).

What is Thanksmas … and when? Thanksmas is a holiday when religion doesn’t matter; it’s about spending time with loved ones — not just family. It can be held anytime between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, usually on a weekend, never before noon. Hold this celebration at your place, someone else’s house if your space is limited, or in a church basement or other venue.

4. DON’T try to cook the perfect meal because the goal of this “holiday” is to have fun. Go ahead and cook a turkey and a ham if that’s what floats your boat, but I’m giving you permission to do something different like make pizza, stir-fry, tamales or bratwurst. It’s your party, and the sky’s the limit! Being a little goofy gains you extra Thanksmas points.

Why Thanksmas? Thanksmas is a great excuse to keep in touch with the friends you can’t even seem to spend time on the phone with anymore. I mean, Facebook is a great social outlet, but it’s not the same as a face-to-face conversation and a hug. Also, we overextend ourselves during the main holidays, and we need a day when we can focus on fun, relationships, and relaxation.

5. DON’T dress up. I’m not saying to ask your guests to come in jammies (okay, maybe I am), but for the love of all that is Thanksmas, please do not allow your guests to dress up! Comfy is key.

Who is invited to Thanksmas? Thanksmas includes friends, neighbors, a family you want to get to know better, your own family who might be out of town during the main holidays, etc. Invite who you want, not who you feel like you should. This is a great time to invite someone like that cool ex-aunt who you never get to see anymore or that family you wonder about at church. How to do Thanksmas 1. Start with the invitations. Have your kids trace their hands on the front of green and red construction paper for a turkey shape, include the details, and mail those puppies off old-fashioned style. 2. Head to the clearance section of your local party store 12

Our Kids Magazine | November 2018

3. Download a bunch of Christmas music and hook up a speaker.

6. DON’T stress out. Your house does not need to be immaculate, and your cooking doesn’t need to be gourmet. Make your celebration a potluck so most of the meal is taken care of. 7. Put out crayons, coloring books, and games for the kids. And if you happen to pop something in the DVD player for the kids like “A Christmas Story” or “Elf ” or Tom and Jerry’s “The Nutcracker” so you can have some adult conversations in another room, I won’t tell anybody. 8. Give back. Come up with a charity, and have your guests bring something for it, like canned goods for a food bank or diapers for a local crisis pregnancy center. Teach the kids about religious freedom and diversity, and how great it is to get together with all kinds of different people. Kerrie McLoughlin loves throwing parties! Showered In Support

10 Baby Shower Gifts for Newborn Parents By Christina Katz

When people say having a baby is like having a bomb go off in the living room, they are not kidding. If you are having a baby for the first time, you are going to need all the help you can get. So don’t be afraid to ask for products that will help you survive the first few months of new parenthood. When you are the gift-giver, remember that thoughtfulness counts. When I was a new mother, anything that helped me be hands-free was most appreciated. I did not even realize how much a sling or backpack would help until my hands were no longer available. No matter what you buy, remember to get gift or regular receipts. If you are unsure about a mother’s position regarding feeding, diapering and pacifiers, steer clear of those items. Even if you are certain this mom would think breast was best or pacifiers are crucial, you’d better wait and let her make the call. Also avoid perfumed soaps or creams that may cause a sensitive skin reaction. When it comes to shower shopping, think loving, helpful and supportive and you can’t go wrong. A little forethought and introspection will likely lead you to choices any new mother would cherish. Here are ten tips on purchasing baby products that make parenting newborns easier. Happy shopping! 1. Convertible Car Seat. You will not believe how long baby is going to be using a car seat, especially if the child is on the petite side. My best advice is to search for whatever car seat is the current best model in terms of safety. The most protective choice is what every parents want for their precious child. A good car seat is a bit of an investment, and worth every penny. Remember, you can’t go home after a hospital delivery without one. Check out this overview of car seats from the US Department Of Transportation https://www.nhtsa.gov/equipment/car-seats-and-boosterseats#find-right-car-seat-find-compare-seats. 2. Diapers. Brace yourself for the giant impact on the Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

environment one tiny baby can have. By far, your largest expense after having a baby is the steady need for clean diapers. Before deciding on disposable or cloth diapers, take a deep breath and do your homework. Rather than go one way or the other, why not consider both? Cloth diapers are considerably cheaper. Disposable diapers are more convenient. By using both methods parents can save money and protect the environment, while allowing for convenience over virtuousness now and then. 3. Feeding Bottles. Whether mom is nursing or not, she is going to need feeding bottles to nourish baby when they are apart. If you are nursing, get a complete feeding kit, including a breast pump so you will be ready. For parents feeding with formula, purchase the basics before baby arrives, but make a larger investment in a system after baby’s delivery, to insure you meet baby’s individual needs. No matter when you purchase, save all the receipts just to be on the safe side. 4. Changing Pads. When my daughter was an infant, we used a changing table, but you don’t need to buy a new piece of furniture unless you want one. These days a changing pad can be used on top of a sturdy dresser or even on a bed. Portable changing pads are also an option, if bending over does not hurt your back. But keep in mind the sheer volume of diapers that will be changed. Babies are estimated to go through 1,200 diapers in the first four months. Consider what is best for everyone doing the changing, before you decide. 5. Baby Carrier. Having a great baby carrier helps you get out and about with less fuss. Whether you are taking a walk, going shopping or heading to your baby group, the Baby Bjorn carrier is my top recommendation, but there are many quality brands out there. Most carriers will last for years longer than you will need them. But you can hand yours down when you are done with it or use it next time. November 2018 | OurKidsMagazine.com

6. Baby Monitor. Remember that scene in Terms Of Endearment where Shirley McClaine is nervously running back and forth into the nursery to mare sure her new baby is still breathing? That won’t be you, if you use a baby monitor. Baby monitors today are a far cry from what they used to be. You will be able to hear your baby, see your baby, and even speak to your baby from another room, if you wish. A monitor gives new parents the peace of mind and flexibility that they need, so take advantage of it.

7. Chairs That Move. There are two types of moving chairs you will want once you bring your baby home from the hospital: a rocking chair or glider and a baby swing. Studies show that a calming effect takes place when babies are carried or rocked. I appreciated having a nice big La-ZBoy rocker. We wore that big, sturdy chair out over the years, and that’s exactly what you want to do - spend lots of time snuggling with baby. As for baby swings, they can be nothing short of a miracle when you are hands-free and in the same room. So go ahead and get yourself one. You can always pass it on or use it again next time. 8. Strollers. Mom will appreciate having a portable stroller and a jogger stroller, especially if she wants to get her pre-baby body back. Be sure to pay attention to age qualifications for strollers, so you won’t feel impatient waiting for baby to be big enough after making a purchase. There is a product called the Snuzzler that can keep your tiny baby from rolling around in a stroller or car seat in the short run. But be sure to follower manufacturer guidelines that come with each stroller for safety’s sake. 9. Boppy. A Boppy comes in handy when nursing or feeding. Boppies can also be used as helpful cushioning when babies start to sit up. You can purchase a waterresistant liner and cute slipcover for your Boppy. Just make sure it’s in a pattern you like, because you will use your Boppy often during baby’s first year.

Parents, don’t forget to take a picture of your child in costume this Halloween for a chance to be on the cover of Our Kids Magazine next year. Send photos to rudy@ourkidsmagazine.com by 12p.m. November 10, 2018 20

10. Linens and Clothing. Whatever clothing and linens you acquire, make sure they are comfortable, hypo-allergenic and washable. Despite all the fetching photo shoots you see online, babies are messy. You will want to have a few adorable outfits but avoid getting carried away by too much frou-frou. Here’s what newborns need in quantity: onesies, socks, blankets, burp cloths, changing table liners, washcloths, hooded towels, and pajamas. Stock up in advance and watch the adorable outfits come pouring in after baby’s birth. Folks love selecting baby outfits, so be sure to send out those baby announcements as swiftly as you can. Journalist Christina Katz still remembers every shower gifts that saved the day. Many moons later, she is still grateful for every single one of them. LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA
