The Hogans Celebrate 70th Wedding Anniversary
Friday, July 1, 2022, Stable Gray will celebrate their new offices with a ribbon cutting at 11:30am. Their new location is at 2520 North 24th Street. Stable Gray in July 2021 received The Small Business of the month award from the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. This organization is the blending of two creative prodigies, one a natural born storyteller, the other a self-taught graphic designer. The creative agency was founded in 2015by CharDale Barnes and Theardis ”Teddy” Young to help small and growing businesses build strong brands at competitive prices. The agency has grown from a staff of two to over ten. Their four marketing pillars: empathy, credibility, capacity, and virality.
Mr. and Mrs. Flourney Hogan are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. They met in 1952 at an Omaha restaurant. Within three months he asked her father could he marry her. Dad said yes! From their union were born eight children, 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. What is the secret to a good marriage: “patience, understanding the good and the bad times you have to hang in there if you want it to work, especially when you love one another a lot and trusting is important in a marriage. The Lord in your life is very important being saved and sanctified and filled with The Holy Ghost.”
Girl Scouts earn Planting Badge Girl Scout Troop #48563 earned a planting badge beautifying our community in preparation for Juneteenth. Plantings were done at the Omaha Star, Great Plains Black History Museum and Zion Baptist Church (their meeting place). Supported by their scout Leader, Dr. Cynthia Gooch-Grayson and her husband Meredith, anad Brother Hawthorne and Miss Leslie.

Many events, lots of vendors, in the spirit of celebrating freedom. There is no place like North 24th Street! Did you get frozen treats from the Soda Shoppe sponsored by North End Teleservices? Did you experience the future with the Steam Punk Tea sponsored by The House of Afro Capes and Curls curated by Miss Jade at NOMA? Did you go to the family at the Malcolm X Foundation? What about all the festivities at the Fabric Lab and the Junteenth JoyFest Not to mention the Opera Omaha presentation at KANEKO featuring poetry, dance, and music. Who said “there is nothing to do in Omaha?” Our city’s cultural events are on the rise. Who knows maybe one day the city of Omaha will have a Director of culture and art like other cities around the country. Yes I said it and I think that that seed should be watered so that it can grow. Art and culture attract visitors and great corporate neighbors. IJS (I am just saying).
Yep! COVID and its cousins are still around, masks up please. I am having a new experience this summer. I am traveling and publishing from hotels and airports. Ahhh the pleasures Dotcom Studios of technology. My favorite saying is: “you are not a success unless you have a successor. “ This summer we are conducting The Junior Journalism and Communications BootCamp in July and August., here in the Omaha Star offices. A generous donation by Milan Laser Hair Removal of 20 HP 27” computers give the Mildred D. Brown Memorial Study Center programming in the community. If you know a young person 13-18 years old, please call our offices (402-346-4041) for more information. On how young people can attend and learn. We are always looking for writers and content for our issues. This summer we have two college students providing content. One in the area of sports and the other for general content. This is how you get started. I remember writing for the Star over thirty years ago. I wrote Fashion Notes, which was a weekly column. LOCAL NEWS June 24, 2022 MCC to showcase new automotive and advanced manufacturing facilities
Metropolitan Community College will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Automotive Training Center and Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) on Monday, June 27 at 10 a.m. The Automotive Training Center is a two-story, $32 million academic facility on the South Omaha Campus near 27th and Q streets. The approximately 100,000 square-foot facility houses the MCC Automotive Technology and Auto Collision Technology programs in addition to the Toyota T-Ten program. The Automotive Training Center is designed to train highly skilled workers for the automotive industry, a field facing workforce shortages. MCC worked in lock-step with local companies such as Baxter, Woodhouse, Jensen Tire & Auto and many others.

The Center for Advanced Manufacturing project is a remodel of an existing facility at the South Omaha Campus. The new center offers improved space for welding, precision machining and the industrial trades programs. Additionally, MCC will offer certificates in several in-demand trade areas, including robotics and robotic maintenance. CAM, a 30,000-square-foot renovation project with a budget of about $10.5 million, also opened its doors 2021 fall quarter. Casting for Recovery Nebraska has held fly-fishing retreats since 2011 for women who have or have had breast cancer. The two-and-a half day retreat is scheduled for September 23, 2022 to September 25, 2022 at Ponca State Park, Ponca, Nebraska. The deadline for submitting an application to attend the retreat is July 15, 2022 and can be completed on-line at castingforrecovery.org or by emailing questions to the Nebraska Program Coordinator at cfrne@cox.net This unique program combines breast cancer education and peer support with fly fishing, enhancing
the lives of women. Casting for Recovery (CFR), is a national nonprofit program for women of all ages and in all stages of breast cancer treatment and recovery who live in Nebraska or South Dakota. It is free to the participants and no fishing experience is necessary. The CFR program is unique because the retreat incorporates the elements of fly fishing and nature to promote physical and mental healing. It is an opportunity to experience a true respite from familiar surroundings and everyday routines. The casting motion of flyfishing provides a gentle exercise for joint and soft tissue stretching.
Fly-fishing provides stress-relief and promotes a sense of calm, while the social interactions offer women a chance to share, laugh, and rejuvenate. Medical professionals provide open educational discussions, the women learn fly fishing basics and on the final day, experienced fly fishing volunteers guide each woman on a half-day of fishing. The Casting for Recovery program in Nebraska is planned, supported and staffed completely by area volunteers. Financial contributions for this program come from Nebraska foundations, grants, organizations and many individuals.

The African Culture Connection hosts performance at Omaha Community Playhouse
The Omaha Community Playhouse will be a hub for celebrating African culture, history, and art during African Culture Connection’s Tikpere event. The family-friendly event will take place on Saturday, July 9 and tickets are now on sale. Tikpere means our culture and history will not disappear in the Bariba language, and event-goers will be able to engage with African tradition and culture in an intimate yet fun way at this year’s event. In partnership with The Malaika Foundation, a marketplace featuring African art available for purchase will open at 6:30pm. The evening culminates at 7:30pm with an engaging live performance showcasing traditional African dances and music. Perfect for all ages, this event is sure to entertain, delight, and inspire all viewers with its engaging and expressive display of African culture and heritage. Tickets for the evening performance are now on sale and can be purchased at https://www.eventbrite. com/e/305681951947. The live performance will feature nine different dances,
ranging from contemporary arrangements of traditional Beninese dance styles to regional ceremonial dances. Sixteen local artists will showcase their talents, alongside three international performers: Luc Aho, a guest artist from Benin; Koko N’Tifafa, a guest artist from Togo; and Aboubacar Soumah, a guest artist from Guinée. The fun doesn’t stop with song and dance! In addition to the live performance, there will be a chance to view and purchase African art. A silent auction will take place for 20 large paintings, prints, and photographs, as well as drums and masks. Additionally, a marketplace featuring over 400 African artisanal works will be for sale. There’s something for every taste and budget in the marketplace, whether it’s a colorful print for your office, beautiful fabrics or carvings. Profits from the silent auction and the marketplace supports the African Culture Connection’s programming efforts in the Omaha community such as their after-school programs and their employee team-building workshops. All the art has been generously donated by the Malaika Foundation, a Nebraska nonprofit with a mission for global understanding. “This Tikpere event is a unique opportunity to introduce African culture and art to Nebraska homes,” said Dr. Natalie Hahn, the founder of The Malaika Foundation. Dr. Hahn is a native of Polk and worked with the United Nations for 38 years, with assignments in Nigeria, Ethiopia and Malawi.

Local Track Star Takes Gold at Nike Outdoor Nationals By Roy Nelson Former Central Eagle, now Westside Warrior Jaylen Lloyd has broken onto the national track and field scene after taking first place in the long jump and second place in the triple jump at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Oregon. With a loaded field of the best high school athletes in the country Lloyd shined bright and stole the show by posting personal best jumps in both events. Building upon his dominant showing at the Nebraska State track meet in which he brought home 3 gold medals, Lloyd began his weekend by shattering his personal best long jump by nearly a foot with a leap of 25-5.5, which would best the Nebraska state record by 5 inches. He then followed up that performance by clearing 50 feet for the first time in the triple jump with a leap of 50-6, which would also be good enough to best the state record. With those jumps Lloyd became the only high schooler in the nation to top 25ft+ and 50ft+ in both horizontal jumps on the year. It’s safe to call that “rare air”. Lloyd and his family will not have much time to celebrate these achievements as he will be completing once again in Eugene in the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships where he will appear in the same events and attempt to extend those PRs again and bring home even more hardware. And with the Jr. Olympics later in the summer, Lloyd will

Leslie was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He married the love of his life Kim in 1980. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He had a flair and love of fashion which he shared as Assistant Manager of Leading Man clothing store and as owner and operator of Exclusively KALA, women’s clothing boutique. His motto: “When you look good you feel good.” Leslie lead a loving life and there are no words for the void left in his family. He leaves a legacy through his wife, Kim Denise of forty seven years; daughter Kandace; son and namesake Leslie,IV (Bridget); cherished grandchildren: Leslie V, Langsten Maxwell, and Macie Kay; his sisters: Sue Ellen Turner, Loretha and Jacqueline Minor (Calvin); half-brother, Troy Anthony; mother-in-law, Yvonne Smith and a host of relatives. His celebration of life was held at the Greater Union Missionary Baptist Church, St. Louis, Missouri.

When it comes to being knowledgeable, it’s not how much we know but how much we understand. It’s one thing to have bags of information seeds stacked up in the barns of our minds, but more importantly, how many seeds of truth have been planted and nurtured to take root within our conscience? Even the devil himself has more knowledge about God than the average person but he does not allow it to change who he is. It’s called selective thinking where facts are learned and accumulated but not acted upon. This is where we see a critical difference between knowledge and wisdom. Just because we read about how to live a victorious Christian life does not mean we will automatically be converted into a victorious overcomer. We must absorb His Word through our perception and into our spirit all the while learning how to surrender our will and discipline our carnality. Beware of powder-puff messages that only talk about strolling through life and enjoying the overflowing storehouses of blessings. They do nothing to awaken our desperate need to be a living sacrifice for God. The Christian life is a constant challenge, in fact, the more serious we become about taking up our cross the more difficult it will be. If we are genuinely born again, our spirit is connected with God’s Spirit and we have a wonderful opportunity to channel His energy into us. If we can prevent our old corrupt nature from talking us out of it, we can be saved from ourselves but it’s going to take a burning passion and a total commitment to live God’s way. Being a follower of Jesus means we are accepting a golden opportunity to transform the way we think which will literally change who we are. Persistence and even stubbornness can be good if we incorporate them into following Christ more intensely. Yes, being stubborn for God can be considered faith, however, being stubborn against God is an attitude of rebellion. He appreciates us for being determined but when He tells us no and we still keep pushing forward, we fall into the dangers of disobedience. There have been times in my life when I did not know if I should stop believing or if I should keep pushing. I’ve had doors slammed in my face and my share of disappointments, but I kept knocking even to the point of trying to force them open with a crowbar. Maybe God never intended for them to open and my demolition attitude just made things worse. Or maybe He wanted to see if I knew the difference between a vision and a whim. Whatever the case, the key to avoiding resentment and

How Do You Sense God’s Presence?

“I sense God’s presence when I pray,” says Kaillyn, age 9. “God comes into my heart and gives me the power to lift my heart up and tell him all the things I need.” Who are we trying to fool when we project an attitude of independence? Every breath we take comes by way of God’s grace. Everyone is needy. Humble people ask God for wisdom, provision and strength. Sensing God’s presence, promptings and power in prayer allows us to move into a realm beyond our meager abilities. In modern warfare, victory usually belongs to those with air superiority. In our personal lives, it’s prayer in spiritual realms that enables us to live victoriously. Only the weak who humble themselves before God in prayer rise up with divine strength. The prophet Isaiah wrote: “But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). When we wait on the Lord in prayer, we exchange our weakness for his strength. “When I pray, I know God is with me,” says Adam, 11. “I can feel him in my heart. When I pray, I’m always calm and gentle inside.” If we consider all that Jesus promised to those who pray to the Father in his name, we’re foolish not to exercise this privilege. Jesus said, “And whatever you ask in my name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:13). If you want to experience God’s presence in prayer, discover what glorifies the Father. Then, pray in Jesus’

confusion and knowing if the dark side is working against us or if the Lord is directing us, is spiritual discernment. Wisdom and understanding comes from seeking God’s still small voice with all of our heart and mind. Pray and research thoroughly before you move forward. If you are standing in a crossroad and not sure where to go, do something positive while you are waiting for His confirmation. If you’ve been seeking His direction and have not heard anything, I once heard someone say, “while waiting for a door to open, keep praising Him in the hallway.” You might sense the need to begin a personal fast in order to become more sensitive to His voice. Fasting is not always just about food but can be the denial of other activities as you dedicate quiet time alone with Him. Just how desperate are you? By the way, this is personal and there is no need to broadcast it on social media. When you list all the requirements associated with your goals, you may realize you are simply not ready to proceed at this time, or maybe not at all. Yes, God can move mountains, but since He is the one who created our destiny, our ideas may not be the same as His. He can influence others, give us favor, and create divine appointments, but it’s our spiritual awareness that brings us into the position to receive. He is preparing a path for you behind the scenes that can utilize your strengths and will be a perfect fit for you, however, your obedience and patience are critical factors as you follow HIS plans and not your own. When we join God in what he’s already doing, he will always answer our prayers. “I read the Bible every day, and it tells me that God is always right there when I need him,” says Breya, 8. The Lord told the prophet Jeremiah, “Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3). Like parents attuned to their children’s voices, God hears the cries of his children. He delights in answering their prayers. If we spent more time praying, we would spend less time worrying. The Bible contains the inspired record of faith heroes and heroines who entered into a spiritual realm that seems unreal to most people. Moses refused the riches of Egypt as the adopted son of Pharaoh’s daughter because “he endured as seeing Him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27). Most of us won’t be offered unlimited wealth as the adopted son of the world’s most powerful ruler. But when we see how Moses set aside the riches of Egypt to suffer with the people of God, we’re encouraged to press into God’s presence. We want to behold God in a way that allows us to count the riches of this world as nothing. Think about this: Before Jesus went to the cross to die for our sins, he promised to send the Holy Spirit to his people as the helper who would guide them into all truth. Jesus actually said that if he went away, his disciples would gain an advantage because he would send the Spirit of truth (John 16:7). When you pray today, let the Holy Spirit carry you on eagles’ wings into God’s presence. Memorize this truth: John 14:13 quoted above. Ask this question: Are you pressing into God’s presence in prayer?

The Autism Society of Nebraska, Pediatric Therapy Center, the Down Syndrome Alliance of the Midlands, along with College of Saint Mary is hosting its iCan Swim and iCan Bike camps at CSM’s new Flames Lied Fitness Center. This is the first year of the partnership with CSM and the first year for the swim camp, which is June 20-24 (today through Friday) in the University’s Aquatic Center. The bike camp is July 18-22. The camps utilize the iCan Shine programs, which serve nearly 3,000 people with disabilities each year. The swim camp is for children ages 3 and up with special needs. Each of the 30 swimmers participating will spend 45

to 60 minutes a day for five days to meet their own unique goals, which will range from an introduction to water exploration, learning water safety in aquatic environment, learning to swim, or skill refinement in preparation to join a Special Olympics, Paralympic or other swim team. The bike camp is for children 8 years old and up with special needs. Campers spend a concentrated 75 minutes a day for five days to learn and practice their skills. Each camp has two volunteers by their side throughout the camp. CSM occupational therapy students will serve as many of those volunteers. “We couldn’t be successful without the volunteers,” said Danielle Thiessen, lead physical therapist at Pediatric Therapy Center. “Having this many volunteers

Teachers work with scholars in small groups to target concepts that need review from the school year based on their MAP progress reports.
