Faith Communities Unite to Encourage Organ and Tissue Donation
Saturday, November 12, 1:00 P.M. Mount Calvary Community Church, 5112 Ames Ave, Omaha, Faith leaders representing Christian, Jewish, and Muslim traditions will come together for an interfaith service of prayer, testimony, and music to encourage organ and tissue donation. The program will include testimonials from a transplant recipient, donor family member, living donor and a patient waiting
for an organ transplant. Members of the Men’s Chorus from Mount Calvary Community Church and the Salem Baptist Church Choir will also share musical selections. More than 100,000 people in the United States are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and provide healing to 100 additional people through tissue donation. Communities of
faith embrace organ and tissue donation as a final act of love and generosity. Donor Sabbath provides congregants comfort in their decision to register and hope for those in need of a lifesaving transplant. Covid-19…RSV… The Flu…still here and advancing… Last Week I saw X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X presented by Opera Omaha. I participated in a panel discussion and attended the talks by Geoff Pope, in cooperation with the Malcolm X Foundation. It amazes me that many years have passed since 1964 and
some of the same issues plague our society today. As it was said in the opera “the chickens have come home to roost.” While many view Malcolm X as a radical, it is my opinion he was not. He was a deep thinker a man who was focused on activating the people to self sufficiency and was constantly being misunderstood and
hunted. Let that thought marinate…In 2022, how are we activating ourselves to be not so influenced by the media but to think for ourselves and proceed? Geoff Pope repeatedly used the phrase: “are you sending the ladder back down?” What are you doing to assist those who have not climbed
up yet, namely our youth and others. In order for those to use the ladder that is being extended, they must recognize that help is being offered and to take the assistance. How have you sent the ladder back down? The influence of social media as a source for knowledge is wide spread. Reading is being replaced
with information gained on TikTok. I implore you to know for YOURSELF. Investigate and get pure knowledge and do not just digest what is being served in the mainstream media. Until next week…READ for yourself

Health and Housing Coalition Launches First-Ever Medical Respite Program in Nebraska

‘Health and Dwelling,’ a 24-month pilot in the Greater Omaha-Council Bluffs area, will provide housing and medical support to those experiencing homelessness Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. and Siena Francis House launched “Health and Dwelling,” a unique 24-month pilot medical respite program in the Greater Omaha-Council Bluffs area of Nebraska. This is the first medical respite program in Nebraska. “The program will grant those experiencing homelessness better post-acute recovery care, and safe and secure shortterm residential housing allowing for improved health, social and cost outcomes for all involved,” said Kenny McMorris, CEO of Charles Drew Health Center. As a result of a 2020 planning grant which provided funds to convene the Health + Housing Coalition, facilitated by The Wellbeing Partners, organizations across the metro came together to collaborate and identify the needs of the chronically homeless, medically complex population in our community. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was then released to launch medical respite. CHI Health, through its national foundation, awarded $500,000 to Siena Francis House and Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. to carry out the pilot program, with intentions to implement the program long-term for those experiencing homelessness with chronic health conditions. The program provides a transition of care from an acute care facility to medical respite, serving as an alternative to readmission to hospitals for minor ailments that do not require hospitalization but do require monitored medical treatment. Through the program, medical care will be provided by Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. and services will include post-acute care, behavioral health, dental care and pharmacy services. Siena Francis House will provide shelter, food, clothing and other personal needs, case management and support services. CyncHealth, the designated health information exchange for Nebraska and western Iowa, will provide the IT infrastructure to support the program. Medical respite programs have proven to shorten hospital length stays, reduce hospital readmissions, improve health outcomes of participants and lower overall cost of healthcare. “We are excited to launch this pilot and improve the system of care for individuals who are experiencing homelessness and have needs that cannot be met in a traditional shelter setting,” said Michelle Bobier, Chief Program Officer at Siena Francis House. “This program is an innovative way for community agencies to come together and support members of the community by providing people an opportunity to rest, recover, set and work on goals and receive health management education,” added Joy Doll, Vice President of Community Programs at CyncHealth. “Medical respite also provides benefits to hospitals as it provides a safe discharge opportunity.” The program is working with local hospitals to coordinate a referral/application process utilizing the Unite Nebraska platform. Clinical admission requirements are: must be 19 years of age, willing to be admitted to service, willing to meet with medical and program staff, verified medically stable, independent in daily living activities, able to manage medications and oriented to time, place and ability to communicate. Partnership 4 Kids to Launch “Saturday Academy” A Multi-generational Career Development On Saturday, November 12th, from 11a.m.1p.m., on the South Campus of Metropolitan Community College, 2909 Babe Gomez Avenue, CAM Building, Room 120, Partnership 4 Kids will kick off “Saturday Academy” a new program initiative focused on multi-generational career development. Partnership 4 Kids Saturday Academy will consist of quarterly workshops open to programenrolled students and their adult family members who wish to explore local career opportunities, enroll in continuing education, strengthen employability skills and/or access resources to support their professional development and advancement. “Many of our students’ families were financially struggling before the pandemic began, so layoffs, job eliminations and all the obstacles that the pandemic brought with it has compounded financial burdens, and the need for financial stability,” said Partnership 4 Kids President, Deb Denbeck. “We realized that professional development education and resources are assets that would benefit both students and family members with a desire
to advance their career. And that’s why Saturday Academy was created.” On Saturday, Partnership 4 Kids students and their adult family members will have the opportunity to participate in STEM-focused activities with drones and robots, tour the Metropolitan Community College South Campus, learn about continuing education pathways offered at Metropolitan Community College, explore job openings with Partnership 4 Kids corporate partner, CLAAS of America, and access health care resources and other community services. This event will also culminate a two-year collaborative project between Partnership 4 Kids, Metropolitan Community College, global manufacturing company, CLAAS of America, which engaged more than 200 middle school youth in exploration of manufacturing technology education and career pathways that are available in Nebraska. This project was funded through a grant made by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s Developing Youth Talent Initiative.

What Will God Do When He Sees You In Heaven?
“Smile at me,” says Sofia, 5. I wonder how many of us can imagine God smiling at all? To imagine God smiling requires that little five-letter word called “grace.” Most of us know instinctively that we fall far short of the kind of righteousness needed to cause God to smile. When we think of our failures and sins, we can easily imagine an angry, frowning God. Grace causes God to smile a lot because it doesn’t depend on anything we do or fail to do. Our performance is not an issue. Grace depends solely on God’s initiative and work. If grace depended upon us in any way, it would surely fail. God is smiling because his love motivated him to send his only son to die on
the cross for all our sins. I like to call this the Grace Exchange. Jesus takes our sins by offering himself as a sacrifice for our sins and those who believe in him alone for their salvation have his righteousness credited to them (2 Corinthians 5:21). “When I get to heaven, God will lift me up, wipe away every tear,” says Karissa, 11. Of the age to come, the Apostle John wrote, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4). If this isn’t hope, what is? Can we imagine a
world without tears, death, sorrow, pain or crying? As I go to therapy for a frozen left shoulder, I’m ready for “no more pain.” The second coming of Christ will see the suffering of this present world pass away like a distant, faded memory. This present world is infected by sin and only the return of Jesus Christ can restore it to a state even better than the paradise God originally created. Read Isaiah 60 and Revelation 21-22. Karissa, 11, also says: “He will give me a new name and call me his beloved.” God is in the new identity business. Remember Jacob? God renamed him Israel, which means prince of God. Remember Simon? Jesus renamed him Peter,

which means rock. Peter’s confession that Jesus is the Christ, “the Son of the living God” became the rock upon which Jesus built his church (Matthew 16:16-18). Even though all who arrive in heaven do so by accepting God’s grace in believing in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a new name on a white stone will be given only to those who “overcome.” That same grace that allows us to become citizens of heaven enables us to live an overcoming life now. Our natural tendency is to live selfishly with ourselves at the center of our world. When Jesus Christ takes up residency in a Christian through his Spirit, he or she can break
the selfish orbit and begin to focus on the Lord as the true, life-giving center. Jesus not only promises eternal life to all who believe in him, he offers an abundant life to all who follow him (John 10:10). Think about this: Living the abundant life now will have eternal consequences beyond what anyone can imagine. It all starts with God giving you a new name on a white stone that only you will know. You want to arrive in heaven not as a mere resident, but as an overcomer (Revelation 2:17 & 3:12). Memorize this truth: Revelation 21:4 previously quoted. Ask this question: Who is the center of your life?

Politics Counts, Voting Counts and Who’s in Charge Makes a Difference John G. Daniels The National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMDSC) held its 50th national conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. Marc Morial, former Mayor of New Orleans and the current President of the National Urban League (NUL), was a guest speaker at the event. The Q and A with Marc Morial follows: What is the significance of the Infrastructure Investment Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act on minority business? First, nothing like that has happen in the same six month period in the last 40 years since the last urban equity legislation known as the empowerment zones (money and taxes incentives offered in a placebased strategy). Second, the growth of our consumer economy needs to be understood as powering the corporate side of the house. This will take sustained: advocacy, awareness, policies, and initiatives. Why do minority businesses have monetary caps in this legislation? Built on a legacy of racial discrimination and exclusion, the Reagan and Bush administrations put caps on minority business in order to say they must com-pete and not receive entitlements.That theory is broken, busted and disgusted because minority businesses are com-peting with global level enterprises. Morial urges that legislative caps need to be eliminated or radically revised because: • Minority businesses face discrimination in capital markets and procurement.

• Racial Equity Executive Order could be cancelled by a new administration “Politics counts, voting counts and who’s in charge makes a difference.” We must fight cynicism and disappointment in the underserved community that says it doesn’t matter if we vote. “Politics is not a transactional business, it’s a business of competing agendas.” What actionable items would you like to result from the 2022 NMSDC conference? Affirmation of a legislative agenda that gets rid of the caps and holds government accountable for the commitments made. John G. “Amendment 1: Airport Revenue Support”
Every once in a while, political media advertisements say the name of the bill without describing what the bill actually is. This can cause voters to ignore said issue or ignite curiosity and research. For myself, this began the inquiry to discover what exactly is the Nebraska Amendment 1 that will be on the November 8, 2022 election. “Yes” to this amendment means: amending the state constitution to authorize any city, county, or other political subdivision that operates an airport to spend revenue to develop commercial air travel at the local airport. “No” amending the state constitution to authorize any city, county, or other political subdivision that operates an airport to spend revenue to develop commercial air travel at the local airport.
Being in favor of this state constitution amendment is the creator of the legislative measure LR 283CA to put it on the ballot. “Nebraska has been behind other states of its size when it comes to how much commercial air service we have,” District 29 Sen Eliot Bostar shared in the StarHerald. “Recently, we’ve been losing air service across the state. One of the reasons for this is Nebraska doesn’t have the same tools at its disposal that every other state has.” Thus creating another stream of revenue that Nebraskans will benefit from. The opposition for this amendment is the idea that Nebraska might not have the population and demand to use such a method. If this amendment had an exact plan of how to be used and

One example for this plan came from Raul Aguallo, the airport director for the Western Nebraska Regional Airport, as to be able to “fly to Lincoln.” If the amendment is passed, Aguallo and the airport board will explore the possible avenues until a solution is found. The overall goal is to put Nebraska in the ability to create similar financial developments as other states. When amendments go on the ballots, the people that it affects should know potential results. The results are unknown, yet there is a possibility that we will gain from this. There is also a possibility we might lose from this. All in all, it is a step in Omaha’s evolution towards becoming a metropolis.

Joy And Peace Are A State Of Mind Fear and stress are often blamed for ruining our contentment and happiness, but anxiety is not an uncontrollable monster that forces us to be afraid. Actually, these negative responses originate from within our own beliefs. In this light, pessimism is a personal decision that will continue to influence our thinking until a new system of thought processing is installed. The Bible says in the book of Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the views of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Simply stated, this verse is generally talking about interpreting our views through the lens of God’s Word and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, rather than through the lens of our emotions, past experiences, or the opinions of others. Recognizing our patterns and tendencies to be gloomy can explain why we react in certain ways and help us improve our pessimistic attitudes. Asking God to help us re-wire our minds is the key to learning how to trust Him as changing the way we think will change who we are as we demonstrate a life that honors Him. The recent decline in our economy is now at the point where many are feeling stressed and worried. My wife and I have noticed our home and auto insurance is climbing along with a significant increase in our utility bills and property taxes. With mortgage interest rates rising, we are
seeing home sales slowing down and subsequently real estate prices are falling. We have concerns about shortages, along with the rising cost of food and fuel and it only makes sense that as the cost of operating a business increases, they must raise prices to maintain a profit. Some are indeed jumping on the price-gouging wagon, but nonetheless, our world is currently not heading in a good direction. We can look back in history and see there are ups and downs in the stock markets and inflation, but whether enjoying prosperity or experiencing difficulties, it’s wise to remember that God is our source and it’s more secure to place our truth in Him than any earthly government. We are not to ignore what is going on, but the way we live is not based on a political party, it’s standing for truth and doing what is right in God’s eyes. It only makes things worse to blame others or to argue about the condition of our nation. We must realize that it is Satan who manipulates humans and his purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy which includes wreaking havoc on economies, creating division, and causing people to suffer. However, the Lord promises in Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” People talk about going to their “happy place” a seemingly magical location where we can take shelter from whatever is threatening our security. But what is this about? It can
mean different things to different people but for those who have a relationship with God, it’s a place in the deepest part of our conscience where we can commune with God and embrace the safety and joy of His presence. It is said that trying times are not the times to stop trying and that we can either give up or get up. Often when people face serious challenges in life, they lose hope rather than persevere in faith. We are reminded in Psalm 91:1, “They who dwell in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” In first Samuel chapter 3, it says that David found strength in the Lord, which means he encouraged himself. He was facing one of the most difficult challenges of his life, and no one was around to encourage him. There will be times when no one is around to counsel or give us a pep talk, and it’s during these seasons that we will need to embrace God’s promises for ourselves. Whether it be an emotional, psychological or spiritual issue, we can either be in control of our thoughts or our assumptions will control us. When we receive God’s wisdom it allows us to see life from His positive perspective which is never associated with fear, depression, or hopelessness. Apply for Kindergarten at Nelson Mandela Elementary Nelson Mandela Elementary is a year-round, private, tuition-free K-5 elementary school located in north Omaha. The mission of Nelson Mandela Elementary is to provide quality instruction that demonstrates ALL scholars can learn and develop academically, emotionally, socially, and physically. Nelson Mandela Elementary is committed to maximizing the educational success of all scholars and bridging learning and achievement gaps. To fulfill our mission and make sure we are best serving our community; we have a thorough application process. Pre-applications for Kindergarten will open December 1, 2022 and close January 1, 2023. These pre-applications are the first step in the application process to determine preliminary need and eligibility. Nelson Mandela Elementary only enrolls at the kindergarten and first grade level. We accept incoming kindergarteners whose birthdays are on or before June 1 of the upcoming school year. Admission at the first grade level only occurs if there is space available. Due to the rigor of our curriculum, including violin class, we do not accept any scholars entering second, third, fourth, or fifth grade. Based on the information provided in the pre-application, families may be asked to move forward in the application process for an interview. The administration will thoroughly evaluate all pre-applications when determining who will be interviewed. An interview does not guarantee enrollment. The interview will allow the administration to determine kindergarten-readiness as well as if the family is a good fit for the school. Each year, Nelson Mandela Elementary can only accept an average of 40 new scholars for kindergarten.
