Are you stuck! – With your back against the wall.

You can save a lot of money by using an ERP IT solution as a standard solution; that means as it is intended to be, e.g. a Microsoft Dynamics NAV solution.

But a standard solution does not always consist of what you need at first sight. Before having examined carefully, what the standard system is able to or what it is not able to, and before having considered how you can alter the procedures of the company to conform to the standard system, it often happens that you start to change and expand the solution by programming. After having started the programming, you have already “shot yourself (and the company) in the foot”, regarding expensive reimplementation of changes made and expansions in future updates and new versions. Consequently these updates are made very seldom. Definition I: Usually a standard solution has been developed and further developed on the basis of “BEST PRACTICE” knowledge for many types of business and task performance. Think about that, before you start to alter (program) in your solution.

If you have already decided that you do not want to program, and that you are missing functions, which are not available in the standard; fortunately standard expanded solutions for the standard solutions are available. Definition II: A standard expanded solution is an integrated solution, which does not alter even a line in the codes of the programming in the standard basis solution. But remember to ask your supplier, if it really is a true standard solution he is able to deliver. Namely a solution that does not make alterations in the “engine room” of your standard basic solution. There is just one further version, we could call definition III: Some suppliers develop their own solution based on a standard solution; e.g. Microsoft Dynamics NAV, and sell it as a standard solution in their own name or in the name of Microsoft. Often there have been made serious changes in the “engine room”, consequently it is no longer a standard solution, however it is the “standard solution” of the supplier. In this regard you have to decide, if you want to enter a long-term relationship with a future supplier. Usually you do not have a standard solution any longer. Standard basis and standard expanded solutions result in, among other things that it is possible to update them continuously, and an upgrade to newer versions is very easy to carry out, when new versions are released. Microsoft, for instance, regularly publishes new updates, but a new Dynamics NAV version each year, too. There are many good reasons for the fact that these updates/versions are published/released as bug fixes, improvements and new functions. Have a look at the current status of the update / version history of Dynamics NAV 2013/2015: For Dynamics NAV version 2013 to date 30 continuous updates have been released For version 2013R2 to date 23 continuous updates have been released For version 2015 until now 11 updates have been released A new version2016 will be released very soon Finally 5 good questions:

1. In general, how many updates have been made on your system in order to be up to date? 2. Think about how often your Windows or your smartphone is updated without your active participation? You just notice that fewer errors occur and that things work even better.

3. Have you ever wondered about starting to program / develop the Smartphone application you are have. Of course not!

4. Most of the standard systems have a mandatory payment of the maintenance fee, which means that you receive updates and new versions for free. Why not use them, now you are paying anyway?

5. How old is the (changed) ERP-version you use in your company? – where you kind of have your back against the wall with regards to the question of updates and upgrades?

It might be even very expensive to make the wrong decisions with regards to your IT-solutions.
