T
he architecture of design and art institutes act as enormous fields of inspirations since these spaces stimulate interesting conversations, inculcate ideas and catalyse originality in the atmosphere. A belief in the power of drawing and its central role in artistic creativity was vociferously shared by Stuart Bartholomew, the Vice Chancellor and Head of Arts University Bournemouth and its architect alumnus, Sir Peter Cook. In 2014 Bartholomew invited Cook to design this building, which is dedicated to that pursuit. Cook’s office CRAB (the Cook-Robotham Architecture Bureau) with Jenna AlAli as Project Architect then developed an instrument that is to be used by the students of all of its 17 departments. The importance of light in architectural spaces have never been underestimated, however, it is more recently with the use of new technologies that one can desire to build wide-spanned openings to capture soft light into spaces. “History of architecture seems to be preoccupied by the form of the window, the decoration of the window, the acknowledgement of the window.” -Sir Peter Cook (Lecture at the 361 Degree Conference 2016)

ocially responsible architecture and its benefits answer the continually asked questions of, ‘What role do architects play in improving the social fabric of localities?’ and ‘How can architecture make a difference?’. Efforts by architects to work towards economically, sustainably and socially uplifting architectural models are underrated and rare to find. Such architecture has been seen emerging in various parts of Africa, Bangladesh, India, Vietnam and many other countries, where non-profit organisations team up with Indian Architect & Builder - July 2016
the locals to create examples of an architecture which can be easily created using indigenous techniques, ideas and applications. These inturn reinforce the belief of the people that architecture is not only for those who seek it and also helps them comprehend the importance of design in everyday lives. Makoko Floating School is a prototype structure that addresses physical and social needs in view of the growing challenges of climate

Such architecture can imbed and intermingle with the social culture and enhance opportunities to be independent for the people of developing nations. About NLÉ: NLÉ is an Architecture, Design and Urbanism practice focused on developing cities. Founded in 2010 by Nigerian-born architect, Kunlé Adeyemi, founded it currently runs its operations from Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Lagos, Nigeria. One of the mega century’s dominant and unstoppable trends is urbanisation. The outcome is a growing number of megacities worldwide, all of which face the same challenges. Within this context just as Silicon Valley acts as the home for new technologies it is the cities of the developing world that will generate responsible solutions for the larger world. As thinkers, creatives and agents of change, NLÉ’s role is to reveal these solutions and apply them so that we shape the physical, human and commercial structures that are critical to the near future of human civilization. hmedabad, a city treasured with detailed and delicately crafted heritage structures, represents not only the traditionalism but has progressed itself with the contemporary styles of architecture in its surrounding atmosphere. Currently the city is nurturing itself as a “Knowledge Hub”, leading the transformation to blend with the youth centric culture and style. Vir.Muller architects, while adding these modern styles to their design execution, have taken a page from the traditional built forms in the city. Their approach towards retaining the architectural history and then explore artistic possibilities while keeping the milieu intact has created an eloquent endeavour through this project. As one takes a tour of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) at Ahmedabad University, the entire surrounding welcomes its Indian Architect & Builder - July 2016
community of students and scholars with an academic quadrangle combining all the functional areas and a centrally oriented courtyard. The façade in the exteriors exemplifies a certain contemporary set of blinds which gives the edifice its academic typology. The planning of the entire structure is organised on the basis of its priorities and has limited itself to its functionality without interrupting the entire system with extravagant spaces. The structure compliments the sequence of space in a compact trapezoidal form with an array of columns, creating flexible large-span spaces, suitable for an evolving academic program. The building circulation - in the form of cantilevered stairs and screened galleries - weaves alongside the courtyard, creates a dynamic relationship between landscape and architecture. The galleries and corridors are designed to facilitate seamless movement, while offering repose with a line of sandstone benches oriented

essence of architecture seen in Ahmedabad city. Although the city proceeds with its rapid urbanisation beyond this site, preserving yet changing aspirations of architecture in a constructive way is what the planners have achieved through this built form. As they succeed in reconceptualising this intellectual capital, the project has also given a different articulation to the academic edifice through its contemporary cannon.

jjain is a historical city ruled by ancient kings and has many a literatures woven around it. Its rich history which boasts the reign of many illustrious dynasties including the Satvahanas and the Guptas and has also been witness to many great poets like Bhasa and Kalidasa, who have based many of their prose and poetry in this great city. Through history, the city has been built and rebuilt many times to attain its current milieu, growing richer in its built and un-built traditions and culture with the evolving socio-political environment. It has successfully retained its strong cultural and religious flavour, foundations of which have been said to be laid during the Gupta period. The core area of the city, which sits slightly away from the busy Ghats, is where this tradition is seen manifested in the tangible and the intangible. The crisscross maze of the residential streets host a series of beautiful houses: their windows, balconies, and verandahs opening directly on to the street, making it an intrinsic part of the life of the residents. The inner lanes are lazy, calling one for a quiet afternoon conversation; these open

into the stronger axes of bazaar streets, lined with shops selling religious items, books, local favourites, and famous delicacies; teeming with people from nearby villages, devotees coming from far, locals mingling with the crowd and buzzing with constant activity of selling and buying. These bazaar streets are also the processional routes connecting major temples like Mahakaal and Gopaleshwar with the Ghats. The Ghats with their beautiful temples, changing rooms, sarais and baradaries made alive with the devotees and sadhus bathing, relaxing and meditating on the banks of river Kshipra, is where we can always see an on-going celebration of a culture which is ancient, engaging through its rituals, endured by its people through age; and hence eternal. This culture and its celebration is seen to be at its zenith during the month long Sinhastha Kumbh, which Ujjain hosts every 12 years with the ghats teeming with the arrival of people from all walks of life and from diverse places throughout India to proclaim the eternal nature of the culture.

Samruddha Mogal Samruddha Mogal is a third generation graduate from his family form Sir J J Collage of Art & Architecture, Mumbai in 1996. He has been capturing architecture through his lens from his early college years. Samruddha has a personal collection of more than three thousand digital photo compositions shot by him over a period of time which largely include architecture, abstract, nature etc. He also had a solo exhibition ‘Light & Shadows in Architecture’ of his photo paintings at prestigious Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai in January ’14. He is a Nashik based practicing architect and also visiting faculty for Design at NDMVPS College of Architecture for more than 10 years. He enjoys travelling and architectural study tours with students and fellow professionals.
