From the publisher’s desk

I

’m a big fan of Japanese restaurants and we have a wealth of good ones here in the High Desert. Whether you like sushi, teriyaki, tempura or any other combination of entrees, there’s a restaurant to cater to your particular appetite on seemingly every corner of the region. I’m going to make a pitch for you to try A1 Grill, Teriyaki and Roll if you haven’t already. The restaurant on Bear Valley Road in Hesperia is near Smart and Final, so it’s easy to find and has ample parking. If you’ve never been there before, the first thing you’ll notice is the place is spotlessly clean. The next thing you’ll notice is the menu has a wonderful variety of bowls, plates, specials, rolls and even some Chinese dishes. That’s right, you can mix and match your Asian cuisine if you would like. If you have a hankering for some Kung Pao chicken to go with a Spicy tuna or California roll, this is the place for you. Egg rolls and Crab Rangoon are available too at reasonable prices. The food is fresh and the sauces are hard to beat, down to the dressing that comes with your side salad. It’s not the typical dressing you’ll find at many Japanese restaurants. This one is very orange and has a wonderful flavor that will leave you yearning for more. The service is excellent, too and there’s a drive-up window if you’re in a hurry and just want to grab some takeout. So if you haven’t tried A1 Grill, Teriyaki and Roll yet, take my advice and stop by for lunch or dinner. I’m confident you’ll add it to your rotation of great Japanese restaurants here in the High Desert. — Steve Hunt

Getting crazy at the Cow

Oro Grande restaurant’s regulars favor a variety of homemade items

RO GRANDE — Visit Cross Eyed Cow Pizza when they open on Tuesday morning and you’re likely to

find Brian. And he’s almost guaranteed to be eating a daily special with pepperoni and sausage. You’re also likely to find him with a Dr Pepper and a modified version of

the restaurant’s garden salad. “It’s just lettuce and m o z z a r e l l a c h e e s e,” says Grace Preston, the restaurant’s marketing manager whose stepfather, Jim Granger, and

mom, Donna, own and run Cross Eyed Cow. Preston tells Dining Out that Brian was originally part of a group of workers from the GE location at Southern C a l i fo r n i a L o g i s t i c s

Airport, just a few miles from the restaurant. “We started getting guys from there and (other companies) over there from the beginning,” Preston says, referring to September

2012 when Cross Eyed Cow opened on National Trails Highway in Oro Grande. “(Brian) trickled in on his own a few times throughout the years and now he’s been coming in almost every single week

Preston said. “One day at a time.” It’s no wonder customers have a variety of favorites here as the Grangers continue to put tons of work into Cross Eyed Cow’s identity, Preston tells Dining Out. “My mom and stepdad are just natural born leaders and trendsetters,” she says. “They come up with these ideas that even I second-guess sometimes but they really work. It’s crazy.” The work they put into the restaurant is evident in more than just the food — there are visual treats to enjoy before, during and after the visit. Inside, Route 66 decor and photos adorn the walls. Outside, a restored trailer is planned to open soon that will sell Route 66 memorabilia and trinkets. “Sometimes when I wake up and come to work, it hits me in the face that my family made this,” Preston said. “I love working here and our customers love eating here because (of what) my mom and stepdad (have done). Watching all the crazy stuff they do, they just outshine everything, even their own expectations.” To fill up on Cross Eyed Cow’s tasty offerings, visit the restaurant at 19242 National Trails Highway in Oro Grande. Call 760-241-1987, visit w w w. c r o s s e y e d c o w pizza.com or find it on Facebook for more information including menu and hours. Cross Eyed Cow also caters. for a year, maybe a year and a half.” Brian is one of many regulars at Cross Eyed Cow, a joint known for its pizza, sandwiches and iconic cow featured prominently on top of its building. Other regulars include many who work nearby and order for take-out or delivery. B u t w h a t t h e y ’r e ordering might surprise you. While Cross Eyed Cow is revered for its hearty pizzas featuring housemade marinara, bold toppings and cheesy goodness, Preston says their Cali Winter salad is a popular option for “the ladies at the cement plant” and “a lot of the teachers” at Riverside Preparatory schools in Oro Grande. The salad features a bed of spinach and lettuce topped with artichokes, red onion, red peppers, black olives, bacon, shaved Parmesan and croutons. It can be finished off with a housemade balsamic vinaigrette. Preston describes the dressing and salad — along with other in-house recipes — as the brainchild of her mom, Donna. “She was eating here a lot and she just kind of got tired of the same thing and so she wanted to try to mix it up,” Preston said. “She wanted to introduce a different ingredient without straying too far from freshness.” So she came up with the Cali Winter salad as a top-notch addition to the menu, and as a vehicle for the balsamic vinaigrette. “People have been begging us to bottle it, which we’re still considering,”

Toasted rye with sliced avocado, crispy bacon and tomato with lettuce makes a colorful, tasty BLAT sandwich at Mile High Cafe. Kathy Young, Dining Out

By Kathy Young Dining Out

D

iners who love Mile High Cafe and visit frequently for breakfast and lunch know about the Hesperia restaurant’s fabulous omelets and creative hamburgers. For those who prefer something other than a burger with all the trimmings, take note: Mile High Cafe outdoes itself yet again with what we

prefer to call “sandwich favorites.” Sandwiches are named after the fourth Earl of Sandwich John Montagu, who, legend tells us, wanted to eat dinner without leaving his place at the card table. He ordered roast beef to be served between two slices of bread, and his “Sandwich” was born. To this writer, just about any sandwich is a

winner, but when it comes to having to “pick just one,” a delicious BLT is my standby. Nothing beats those crispy bacon strips adorning a bed of lettuce on mayo-dressed bread with slices of ripe, flavorful tomato. With the choices of bread — white, wheat, sourdough, rye, etc., toasted or not — everyone with a BLT craving can find a combination that works

for them at Mile High Cafe. Occasionally it’s fun to think outside the box yet again. That’s what happened when we tried a BLT with slices of ripe avocado. Suddenly our standby sandwich went from BLT into BLAT. Suddenly another wonderful taste experience arrived. Slowly, we become “foodies” and tweak our tastebuds even further

with how the bacon is prepared — crispy or “not so much” — as well as how much mayo — extra “on the side.” And of course, the bread. A recent visit to Mile High Cafe resulted in probably one of the best BLAT sandwiches ever. Served on toasted rye bread and with a side of wonderful coleslaw — other options include fruit

or fries — and with perfect bacon and juicy tomato and, of course, mayo, the BLAT is going to be on this writer’s “go to” list. Mile High Cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. for breakfast and lunch seven days a week. The address is 8832 Orange St. in old town Hesperia. Their telephone number is 760-9478844. W Spoon Buffet in Victorville takes diners on a ‘world tour’ By Kathy Young Dining Out

W vvdailypress.com

hether you crave Asian dishes, a plate of American comfort foods or a combination of items from throughout the world, W Spoon Buffet in Victorville is your kind of place. Located near Costco, W Spoon makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in the door. You receive a friendly greeting from the receptionists and you are soon ready to find a table or booth for your party.

Then the “world tour” and the fun begin. W Spoon calls itself a “Multi-Cuisine Buffet,” and that is exactly what you’ll find. There is a table dedicated to beautiful displays of several kinds of freshly made sushi rolls, some of which (like the California Roll) are available daily. Along with the colorful assortment of these rolls, you’ll find a selection of condiments like pickled ginger and wasabi (horseradish) paste — did you know pickled ginger is considered a palate cleanser

for sushi lovers? — plus seaweed salad, octopus sashimi and more. Just beyond the sushi table is the dessert area with cakes, cookies, several kinds of mousse and, adjacent to this area, the soft ice cream dispenser where you can top your favorite dessert or just enjoy the soft-serve all by itself. If you’re a fan of sashimi, which is raw fish, mark your calendars for the weekend because salmon and tuna sashimi are offered. For the Mongolian

Barbecue lover, check out W Spoon’s Hibachi grill. Chefs are ready to prepare to your order with whatever meat or chicken, favorite vegetables and soft noodles make up your favorite hot plate. Seafood is a popular choice for many W Spoon regulars, and whether you’re into shrimp, King crab legs or other types of fish, W Spoon will not disappoint. Green pepper beef, orange chicken, black pepper shrimp or chicken, green beans with sesame seeds, spring rolls,

dumplings, sesame balls, coconut shrimp — you can see where we’re going with this, right? Chinese and Japanese dishes are available and your plate will be full to overflowing. We mentioned American favorites, and that includes mac and cheese, pizza, fried chicken, french fries, and roast beef ready to slice. Now that it is fall, hot soups are on the menu as well. Fresh baked rolls or, if you prefer, crispy crackers go perfectly with the salad options, too, with several varieties of salad

greens, dressings and toppings available. Hot and cold drinks are available for the whole family, and if you’re in the mood for an adult libation, W Spoon serves hot sake and beer. W Spoon Buffet is located at 14689 Valley Center Drive, #C in Victorville. Its hours are 11 a.m. to 3:15 for lunch Monday through Friday; dinner weekends and holidays 3:15 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
