Feds: 8 local schools need improvement By Jill Palermo

Times Staff Writer

The U.S. Department of Education has identified eight local schools “in need of support” to raise test scores and improve attendance among students with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, according to state officials. The identified schools include two City of Manassas schools, one Manassas Park school and five Prince William County schools. The federal law is designed to bring attention to groups of students that have historically faced discrimination and other barriers to success when they fall behind so schools can act. The groups most commonly identified in these schools as needing support were students with See SCHOOLS, page 5

Fauquier stable owner aims to make equestrianism more inclusive By Beth Rasin

When Jade Krafsig was growing up in Fairfax, she desperately wanted to take riding lessons but, from the start, it wasn’t easy for her family. “(My mother) always told me, ‘I won’t pay more than I make an hour for you to sit on a horse for an hour.’ She was a single mom, and it was really difficult for her to do lessons,” said Krafsig, 37, who took her early riding lessons in Beale-

ton. “It always stuck with me how difficult it was for people to take riding lessons.” A computer whiz, she made money selling online horse games she created and, by age 14, she was paying her own way and competing at local horse shows. One thing Krafsig, who is Black, noticed — very few other competitors looked like her. That’s still true. “From my own experience, there are very few minority riders in the area,” Krafsig

said. “I’m usually the only one competing — and the kids I bring.” Black competitors in equestrian sports are exceedingly rare. The U.S. Equestrian Federation, the national governing body of English horse sports, reports fewer than 1% of its nearly 250,000 members are Black. In the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association, a subgroup for the hunter and jumper disciplines, it’s 0.22% of 35,798 members.

After a fire over the weekend left his family of 20 without a place to live, Mykal Coles is reaching out to the community for help to find a new home and to replace furniture, clothing, toys and other possessions damaged in the blaze. Coles, 49, said his two wives and their 17 children have been staying in two extended-stay hotel rooms since Friday night, when a fire sparked by a candle left their Dale City rental home unsafe to occupy and destroyed nearly all of their things. Coles said he is legally married to Alicia Coles, 43. He also has a long-term relationship with Jasmine Jones, 35. Between them, the women have 17 children with him, Mykal Coles said.

A few rain showers couldn’t keep the crowds away from Saturday’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the City of Manassas. It was the 24th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade organized by the nonprofit Inisfail. The first Manassas St. Patrick’s Day Parade happened in 2000 and was led by the Father Kelley Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the oldest Catholic fraternal organization in the U.S. Dozens of people lined Main Street

for the event, coming from all over Northern Virginia. The Manassas parade always happens the weekend before St. Patrick’s Day because many of the participants, including the bagpipers and drum and fife groups, also participate in other parades around the Washington, D.C., area. “We always come here to enjoy an Irish parade. It’s fun,” said Leyinska Collado, a Fairfax County music teacher from Centreville. “We are from Puerto Rico, but we feel Irish today.” Reach Jill Palermo at jpalermo@ fauquier.com

LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF PROPOSED REAL PROPERTY TAX INCREASE The City of Manassas proposes to increase property tax levies. 1. Assessment Increase: Total assessed value of real property (residential and commercial), excluding additional assessments due to new construction or improvements to property, exceeds last year’s total assessed value of real property by 5.19 percent. 2. Lower Rate Necessary to Offset Increased Assessment: The tax rate which would levy the same amount of real estate tax as last year, when multiplied by the new total assessed value of real estate with the exclusions mentioned above, would be $1.198 per $100 of assessed value. This rate will be known as the “lowered tax rate.” 3. Effective Rate Increase: The City of Manassas proposes to adopt a tax rate of $1.28 per $100 of assessed value. The difference between the lowered tax rate and the proposed rate would be $0.082 per $100, or 6.86 percent. This difference will be known as the “effective tax rate increase.” Individual property taxes may, however, increase at a percentage greater than or less than the above percentage. 4. Proposed Total Budget Increase: Based on the proposed real property tax rate and changes in other revenues, the total budget of the City of Manassas (excluding the Manassas City Public School Board budget, which has not yet been presented) will exceed last year’s by 6.7 percent. A public hearing on the increase will be held on Monday, April 22, 2024 at the City Council meeting which begins at 5:30 P.M. in Jennie Dean Elementary School Auditorium, at 9601 Prince William Street, Manassas, Virginia. All hearings are open to the public. The Manassas City Council shall permit persons desiring to be heard an opportunity to present oral testimony within such reasonable time limits as shall be determined by the Manassas City Council.

Citing expense, restaurant owner abandons plans to reopen former Tim’s Rivershore By Jamar Billingsley Contributing Writer

The iconic restaurant on the banks of the Potomac River, once occupied by Tim’s Rivershore, will likely sit empty for yet another summer season. That’s because “Fatty’s on the River,” a seafood eatery slated to take over the space, has backed out of its 20-year lease on the property due to the high cost of needed renovations, according to owner Chris Ahn. Biddle Real Estate Ventures, which manages the property for Potomac Shores, confirmed Ahn’s exit Tuesday. Biddle leased the riverfront restaurant building and the surrounding property to Ahn after it declined to renew its lease with Tim’s Rivershore back in 2021. Tim’s Rivershore owner Tim Bauckman had run the restaurant for 28 years and had built up a huge and loyal following of customers who arrived by both car and boat. Tim’s was known for its buckets of crabs, its expansive outdoor tiki bar, its sandy beach seating area and its signature blue cocktail: the “Killer Driller.” Ahn, who owns a Fatty’s restaurant in Stafford County, spent more than two years planning renovations for the property that he said would include a new roof, a new floor, a renovated kitchen and a self-pour tap wall offering 30 craft beers. Ahn said he hoped to restore the iconic riverfront restaurant into a family-friendly outpost that could once again be accessed by both land and sea. But the project got off to a rough start from the beginning. Ahn inadvertently started a brush fire outside the property in late 2021 while trying

The blaze took firefighters hours to extinguish and resulted in Ahn being charged with a misdemeanor for illegal burning. Then, flood plain restrictions limited the extent of the possible renovations. The restaurant could not be enlarged, and improvements to the interior could not exceed 50% of the property’s value in order for the restaurant to remain eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency flood insurance.

In a statement, Biddle spokesman Burns Patterson said the company remains optimistic that the space will eventually be reopened as a restaurant. “Mandatory renovations have proved more extensive than initially anticipated due to the deteriorated condition of the existing facility,” Patterson said. “The developer is exploring options to meet new business objectives while adhering to (federal) regulations.” Reach Jamar Billingsley at news@fauquier.com

Boosting diversity in horse sports DIVERSITY, from page 1 The federation’s diversity, equity and inclusion plan says that it is working on appealing to a broader pool of potential riders. “We recognize the need to achieve increased diversity and that our growth and success depends on the inclusion of all people,” it states. Krafsig’s experiences fueled her desire to make riding lessons accessible to a wider variety of students at White Oak Stables, near Warrenton, which she opened in 2013. She aims to make riding as affordable and accessible to as many people as possible, offering lessons for a fraction of the usual cost and providing scholarships. Meanwhile, she also works full-time as a computer programmer. In the summer of 2020, as police brutality cases fueled outrage after the murder of George Floyd, a Black man, by a white Minneapolis police officer and launched Black Lives Matter protests, Krafsig resolved to do more to increase diversity in her sport. “I really wanted to push how diverse I could make my own barn, and in doing so, to raise awareness for how other people could (increase diversity in) their own programs,” she said.

Making an impact

As a teenager, Krafsig said she experienced both microaggressions — small comments not always intended to insult but that still reflect bias — and overt racism in the horse world. She added space on her website that explained what it looks like in the horse sports world. One example shows a white rider asking a Black rider, “Who owns your horse?” — suggesting they assume a Black rider would not own that horse. Some other trainers asked her for advice to make their websites more inclusive, and she advised using welcoming language and prominent photos that show more than just white faces. “I give them some recommendations … so people from diverse backgrounds can understand that they can also be doing this,” Krafsig said. To really diversify horse sports, Krafsig said trainers need to reach out to kids in underrepresented com-

munities. She does it by contacting Boys and Girls Clubs, community centers and through outreach in Facebook groups. “I let them know, ‘Hey, we have horses, and you can be part of horses,’” she said. “Because some people get the impression that they are not welcome to these kinds of events.” At her own farm, Krafsig’s lower prices result in a calendar booked months in advance, and she offers a scholarship covering free weekly lessons from May to September to enable more people to try riding. She also encourages students to start in clothes they already have, gaining exposure to the sport before investing in their own helmets, riding boots or other equipment.

Creating a feeling of belonging

One rider who has taken advantage of White Oak’s scholarship program is Amel Holland, whose mother, Tanisha Holland, found Krafsig through an online search for Black stables and equestrian businesses. “As a student of color, and as parents of color, we wanted a place that would be safe for her to ride,” Tanisha Holland said. White Oak, one of very few Black-owned stables Holland found nationwide, happened to be just 30 minutes from her home in Gainesville. “When you go to a place where there’s somebody that looks like you, and who has a mission statement like Jade, right off the bat you feel like you belong,” Tanisha Holland said. She said she has seen her daughter flourish as a result. “I’ve seen her confidence increase,” Tanisha Holland said. “When she did her first jump, I saw a look in her eyes, a spark, like, ‘I did it!’ I see her confidence soar, see her sense of calm that she gets being around horses. She’s smiling while she’s there; she doesn’t want to leave.” Amel, now a high school sophomore, started riding when she was 5. Her mom said she believes Krafsig, who’s already talking to Amel about colleges, will be an influence and a mentor the rest of Amel’s life. “I’ve been to different barns, and Miss Jade’s is the one where I feel I have the most connection to my community,” Amel said. “I feel the

She gets to know riders individually, and I can be open and talk about anything. It’s a safe space I can go to.” Tanisha Holland said she saw her daughter participate in clubs where she was the only person of color and ended up not continuing. “I always wonder if she’s in a place where she feels like she belongs,” she said. At White Oak, Amel’s not only learning about horsemanship and riding but also meeting a variety of people. “You meet people from different aspects, who don’t live the same life as you, don’t have the same privileges you do,” Amel said. “I think it has expanded me as a person because I’ve learned about different religions, races and cultures.”

A broader community

Outside of her own students, Krafsig offers a show division sponsorship to riders of color, paying the cost of entry fees, with the goal of getting “underrepresented people into the larger, recognized horse shows.” She also helps equestrians understand some of the hurdles that riders from more diverse backgrounds might encounter, explaining, for example, how to fit helmets on a variety of hairstyles and “some of the things you can do to help them feel

more comfortable coming into your program and be more open and accepting to the differences.” There are efforts underway to diversify the sport. The governing bodies of the sports that Krafsig works in have formed committees to improve diversity, and Krafsig has been asked to speak to the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association committee, to “reflect on what our associative bodies can be doing to help increase awareness of diversity and help raise diversity,” she said. Krafsig doesn’t limit her vision of diversity just to equestrians of color. She sees it as a spectrum, including riders from different religious backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses, a variety of body sizes and ages and LGBTQ+ students. “Inclusivity means being more open and accepting of everybody and furthering the love of horses with that,” she said. The community response, Krafsig said, has been mixed. “I have had some people that have been extremely supportive and want to know more (about how to do this),” she said. “I’ve had other people that were like, ‘This is rubbish. This is not needed. This is more woke nonsense.’” Reflecting on her personal experiences, Krafsig said she has seen progress, if slow progress. “I’ve been in Fauquier 25 years, and when I started, I’d have people come up and say, ‘Your kind don’t belong here; you need to leave,’ and now people wave and say ‘Hi,’” she said. The increased awareness of the sport’s lack of diversity is a meaningful step, she said. “The equestrian world is very slow to make change,” she said. “We’re based off the founding, classical way of doing things, so for the equestrian community, making changes feels uncomfortable sometimes. Just seeing that we have changes happening — I’ve noticed a lot more people of color in local horse magazines and on websites, and that, in itself, is a win.” Reach Beth Rasin at beth.e.rasin@gmail.com

FIRE, from page 1 The fire started in the afternoon on Friday, March 8, when one of the women was deep cleaning one of their children’s bedrooms. She had removed a mattress from a bunkbed to vacuum underneath it when a spark from a lit candle on top of a dresser hit the rug and set it on fire. “Everything just started (catching fire) really quick, and she couldn’t get it out. So, she got out of the house and called the fire department.” Mykal Coles said his wife wasn’t hurt as she escaped from the home. None of the family’s 17 children, who range in age from 9 months to 21, were home at the time of the fire. All were either in school or daycare, he said. The Prince William County Fire Department arrived at the Coles’ home, located in the 6100 block of Oust Lane, at about about 1:30 p.m. and quickly extinguished the fire, according to Prince William Assistant Fire Chief Matt Smolsk. “There’s a lot of mixed emotions right now,” Mykal Coles said of his children. “The older ones, of course, they’re devastated by the loss of personal items and things like that. The only things they have are the clothes that were on their backs.” A friend set up a GoFundMe account for the family to help them get back on their feet. The kids include 10 girls and seven boys. Two are young adults:

women ages 18 and 21. The other 15 include four teenagers — a boy 16, a girl 16, and two 13-year-old girls — as well as 11 children ages 12 and under. The kids attend Hylton High School, Beville and Saunders middle schools and Rosa Parks Elementary, Mykal Coles said. Mykal Coles said he is a captain for a private police service in Washington, D.C., that’s currently tasked with providing security to the Qatar embassy. He is also an aspiring actor as well as an author of a self-help book titled “I Matter.” He also has a record label and recorded his own album of gospel music, according to his website. Mykal Coles said his main goal is to find another house for his family and says he will have to outfit with all new furniture, as all of their furniture was damaged by smoke. The kids also need new clothes and other items. “Mainly, my concern is just my children. You know, we just want to get them stabilized,” he said. Prior to the fire, he said, the family was doing OK but fears the task ahead will be daunting. “We’re working-class people just hit with something devastating to us,” he said. “So, we’re not trying to beg people, just to ask if (they) can assist in any kind of way just to get us back stabilized.” Reach Jill Palermo at jpalermo@fauquier.com

SCHOOLS, from page 1 disabilities, economically disadvantaged students and Hispanic students. The schools were identified based on state tests given at the end of the 2022-23 school year. The identified schools represent about 6% of the 113 public schools located across Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park. Both Prince William County schools and City of Manassas schools said work is already under way. The eight local schools will receive additional support from the state, which is required to “assist and support” schools in academics, staffing, professional learning and school climate. Each school will conduct a needs assessment, identify strategies and develop a support plan. “Manassas City Public Schools have provided support to both Haydon Elementary and Metz Middle School,” said Almeta Radford, director of public communications for City of Manassas Public Schools. “Targeted follow-up with both Metz and Haydon will occur this spring to ensure that the improvement efforts are in line with all VDOE expectations,” she added. “Division and school support plans will be submitted to VDOE by June 30.” Prince William County schools are “waiting on guidance from VDOE to determine what type of support and programs are needed,” said Meghan Silas, a school division spokeswoman. Local schools federally identified as ‘in need of support’

The Virginia Department of Education recently released a list of 247 schools that failed to meet targets set by the state’s plan under the federal “Every Student Succeeds Act.” Local schools identified as needing support to close large gaps in test scores and attendance rates for vulnerable students compared to the rest of the student body include:

City of Manassas schools

• Haydon Elementary: economically disadvantaged and Hispanic students. • Grace E. Metz Middle School: students with disabilities and multiracial students.

City of Manassas Park schools

• Cougar Elementary: Hispanic students, students with disabilities and multiracial students.

Prince William County schools • Beville Middle: Asian students, students with disabilities and multiracial students. • Fred Lynn Middle: students with disabilities. • Potomac Middle: students with disabilities. • Potomac Shores Middle: Hispanic students and students with disabilities. • Unity Braxton Middle: economically disadvantaged students, Hispanic students, students with disabilities, white students and multiracial students.

GUEST OPINION

The 14th high school must not be delayed until 2029 Our students deserve a solution to overcrowding at Woodbridge High School now, not in 2029. If the current plan to delay the high school proceeds, current fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders slated to go to Woodbridge High School will experience overcrowding for all four years of their high school experience. I was honored to serve as your Occoquan representative on the Prince William County School Board for 11 years. During that time, I accomplished many things of which I am very proud, including the reduction of trailers; additions to three Occoquan District schools; the first “net-zero” school, which will replace Occoquan Elementary; and finally, the planned 14th high school, the first new high school on the county’s east end in 20 years. My husband, Richard Jessie, was elected to the school board last November after I decided not to seek re-election. Since leaving the board, I committed not to speak out regarding matters concerning the school division. But the delayed opening of the 14th high school is such a devastating blow that I had to put my advocacy hat back on. Woodbridge Senior High School has the second-largest enrollment in the county, with approximately 2,800 students. It is almost 50 years old, and no one remembers a time

Lillie Jessie

when it was not overcrowded. The school division staff is proposing the delay because of recent University of Virginia demographic reports that show Northern Virginia losing population to North Carolina and less expensive parts of Virginia, as well as a declining birth rate in Prince William County. But I have concerns about that study, given the number of apartments, condominiums and homes being built for families within the likely boundaries of the 14th high school. The UVA report does not appear to match the growth we are seeing in our communities. Woodbridge Senior High School is not currently using portable classrooms due to the sacrifices of 19 teachers who don’t have their own classrooms but rather shuttle back and forth from one available room to another. These “roving” teachers act like “human trailers” and have been overlooked. Woodbridge has had roving teachers since at least 2015. I was a principal for 20 years, and having a few teachers on carts

— usually art, music, or physical education — was not unusual. But neither the school division’s central office nor I knew about Woodbridge’s enormous number of rovers. Teachers on carts were not considered in the decision about delaying the 14th high school. I am deeply disappointed that the school division’s planning staff continues to recommend that the new high school be delayed until 2029 despite learning about the roving teachers. It was this finding that made me come back to the boardroom. One may ask why the teachers haven’t complained. The answer is what happened when students, parents and staff complained about the poor conditions at the school’s football field. A 5-foot banner highlighting everything the school division had done for Woodbridge High was displayed in the lobby of the Edward L. Kelly building, outside the school board chambers, by the former superintendent’s staff. The Woodbridge Senior High School advocates were humiliated by this “What more do you want?” type of retaliatory gesture. There are other reasons these teachers and most teachers do not complain: They do not know they have the right to do so. They do not like controversy. (As one said, “This is how it has always been

done;” followed by: “We make it work.”) They are worker bees and do not want to lose favor with those above them. They accept what they get; it has become the norm. Finally, and most importantly, some of the teachers do not know about the proposed delay in opening the 14th high school. The appearance of a lack of sensitivity for teachers having to rove from classroom to classroom sends the wrong message, especially at a time when teacher retention is a national and local issue. I commend the staff at Woodbridge High for making such a sacrifice. However, I implore this school board to prioritize providing teachers with proper classrooms. I do not support delaying construction until August 2029, which is two years longer than what was agreed to by the last school board. If the delay is approved, the current school board will effectively force staff to work in an overcrowded school while using roving teachers longer than necessary. Teachers at Woodbridge do not need to be on carts for another five years while we conduct studies. They have suffered enough! Lillie Jessie is a retired Prince William County Schools principal and administrator who served on the school bo ard from 2012 through 2023.

Introducing The JAM — and our love for Prince William County By Scott Elliott I have something cool to show you. It’s the logo for our new daily newsletter called The JAM. The story of the logo and the way it came to be is a story of my team’s love for this place — Prince William County — and their care for you, our readers, and for your friends and neighbors who aren’t yet readers. If you get our newsletter right now, I regret to admit to you that it’s a bit, well, boring. It’s automatically created by our website, which grabs recent stories we’ve published and shoots them directly into your inbox. No human hands touch it, which is why it feels a bit sterile and uninviting. Our team wants to give you something more. Our vision is to make the newsletter feel like a daily email from a friend, telling you something interesting we thought you’d want to know. We also wanted a catchy name. That was really hard. We went through several dozen ideas before this notion of an acronym came

together. JAM stands for “Just A Minute,” because we hope to give you a quick look at everything you need to know each morning. Prince William County is a busy and bustling place. Life here isn’t sterile, boring or uninviting. It’s vibrant, energetic and on-the-move. Prince William County certainly is known for its commuters, racing the clock to work — it might even be best known for the occasional traffic jam. We thought it would be fun to reclaim the word “JAM” for a morning newsletter we hope will contribute to a bright start to the day. Once we got there, we needed a logo that conveyed those words by creating a visual feeling. This is not something everyone can do. It takes an artist. Graphic artist Laurene Craig came up with the idea of a stopwatch in the center. With the name and the stopwatch icon, we just needed to add color. Let me tell you what she envisioned when she thought about a

Scott Elliott

color to represent Prince William County. This is a place teeming with history that is deeply connected to the beauty of its natural landscape. The roads where we commute today were once trails for pioneers and for soldiers making commutes of their own with thoughts of home, family and simpler times in mind as they traveled. Craig’s mind took her to the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk, a scenic and historic place where trails and boardwalks make up a leg of a long national scenic trail from the Allegheny Mountains to the Potomac River.

The boardwalk rises above lush, tall grass that is home to all sorts of birds and other wildlife. Thinking about strolling above the grass, a color to represent the county came to her mind: green. So, when the JAM arrives in your inbox each morning, we hope you’ll embrace the stopwatch and traffic allusions with the spirit of reclaimed ownership that we intended. But sometimes we hope you have the space in your day to let your mind wander to the green landscapes of a casual stroll among the birds along the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk in summertime. The JAM debuts on Monday. You can sign up for free at https://www. fauquier.com/newsletters/. Scott Elliott is the publisher of the Prince William Times

Second time not the charm for Pioneers South Lakes rolls over Patriot, 65-39, in Class 6 boys hoops final By Matthew Proctor Times Staff Writer

Patriot High had multiple reasons to feel they’d beat South Lakes and make history with their first boys basketball state title last Saturday in Richmond. The confident Pioneers were returning to the Class 6 title game at VCU’s Siegel Center. They’d played the toughest schedule in Class 6, which included an 83-72 win over South Lakes on Dec. 19. Matchups against Class 5 champion Woodside, Class 4 champion Hampton and defending Class 6 champion Hayfield had also prepared them for glory. But the Seahawks were just too deep and balanced, getting great guard play and showing excellent size and star power in national recruit Jordan Scott. With a dynamic performance, the Seahawks (26-2) stymied Patriot’s dreams in rolling to a 65-39 victory and capture their first state title. “At the end of the day, you got to score. We did not. We had 39 points in a varsity basketball game. You don’t usually win those types of games,” said Patriot coach Sherman Rivers, whose Pioneers finished 24-5. “We didn’t play our best game today. It’s unfortunate to get to the last game and to not play your best game.” Patriot led 4-0 after winning the opening tip-off, but it would be their only lead as a 15-2 South Lakes run set the tone. South Lakes outscored Patriot 40-16 in the paint, 16-3 off turnovers, 13-3 on second chance opportunities and shot 55.8% from the field compared to 27.8% by the Pioneers. “We just didn’t look comfortable,” Rivers said. “You got to score the basketball. We just did not score it. It’s hard to win in these types of games when you don’t.” “That is a great team that we just played and beat. Coach Rivers always does a tremendous job,” said South Lakes fifth year coach Mike Desmond. “We did a good job settling in before the team that’s been here before.” “I think we can be difficult to guard because we have multiple guys that can put the ball on the deck. It’s drive, draw, kick and then the next guy’s going. It’s a very unselfish team, so getting paint touches when we move ourselves and the ball, it happens naturally,” Desmond added. In building their early advantage, 6-foot-5 forward Jordan Scott, the No. 2 ranked junior in the state according to 247Sports, exploded out of the gates, scoring 10 points in the first quarter. “They ran their offense. He got

I took the matchup personally and gave my all on defense,” Scott said. Scott scored the Seahawks’ first points on a putback following an offensive rebound, then drained a corner 3-pointer to put South Lakes ahead for good at 5-4. Later in the first quarter, Scott converted an alley-oop layup off an assist from

point guard Brian Kennedy, then added an old-fashioned 3-point play on a fast break. South Lakes led 15-8 after the first quarter. The Pioneers hung tight for most of the second, cutting the deficit to 21-17, but the Seahawks’ cushion blossomed back to double-digits at the end of the quarter behind Kennedy’s buzzer beating 3-pointer for a 33-23 halftime lead. Rivers knew it wasn’t the Pioneers’ night after Kennedy’s triple. “I was like, this is one of those days. I just felt it,” Rivers said. “Sometimes when a team’s got the momentum, things just start happening that you don’t necessarily like. It just makes it rough.” The third quarter was another backand-forth tussle that saw Patriot keep their hopes alive as they only trailed 48-37 entering the fourth, but South Lakes quickly slammed the door. Holding the Pioneers to 0-for-10

from floor in the fourth while the Seahawks had their most efficient shooting quarter of the game, the lead soon became out of reach and the celebrations started early for South Lakes. Scott scored a game-high 23 points for the Seahawks. Kennedy had 16, Sol Vita 10, David Rochester seven, Aiden Billings six and Tyler Andre three. Barbour led the Pioneers with 11 with seniors Dezmond Hopkins adding nine, Mekhi Dillard seven, Vick and Abe Halim five and junior Carter Crumity two. Despite the loss, Rivers remained proud of the Pioneers, who have won 51 games and played in two state finals over the last two seasons. “These kids had a goal and they got to this game when a lot of teams wanted to be here. We had an opportunity to come out and do some stuff, but we just didn’t get it done,” he said.

How to prepare your home for spring weather By Carmen Rivera State Farm

You can’t stop spring showers, but you can prepare your home and surroundings for thunderstorms, severe winds and more. Spring is known for its rapidly changing weather and that can mean severe storms. Help get your home and family ready with these tips. Let it flow. Remove winter debris from your gutters, drains and downspouts so that heavy rains can flow freely off your roof. Be sure that downspouts are secure and that water is draining away from your home and not toward your foundation. Add extensions if necessary. Trim the trees. Prune lanky limbs and branches so they don’t snap off in a windstorm and land on your home or a power line. Check the pump. If your home has a sump pump, test it to make sure it’s clean and operable and that the outflow is draining properly. Consider adding a battery-powered backup sump pump to keep the system working if the power goes out. Furthermore, an automatic standby generator can ensure your sump pump and other electrical systems continue to run during power outages. Stow your gear. When strong winds are forecast, secure patio furniture and other yard items or put them in your garage or a shed so they don›t become dangerous projectiles. Cover up. Close and secure storm shutters if your CALENDAR, from page 8 vegetables, grains, dried beans, pasta, and the like. Snacks and refreshments will also be available for purchase (cash only). Janet J. Ford 08/28/1936-03/08/2024 Janet Josephine Ford of Manassas, Virginia passed away peacefully on March 8th, 2024 at the age of 87. Janet was born in 1936 in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. As a child, she lived with her family on the Kokosing Farm, a dairy farm just north of Mt. Vernon. She was very active in her community, specifically in her 4-H work. Janet attended Mt. Vernon Schools and graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree, majoring in Clothing and Textiles. In high school, she was very involved in the music program, in both the band and orchestra. In college, she was a member of the Strollers Dramatic Society, Delta Zeta Sorority, Gamma Alpha Chi, and played violin in the Ohio State University Symphony Orchestra. Later, near mid-life, she became a professional watercolor artist. She sold her artwork all throughout the United States. Her colorful paintings brought joy to many. Most importantly, she was a devout mother, grandmother, aunt, neighbor, and friend to all that knew her. Janet's family meant the most to her, and she found joy in opening up her home for many to enjoy her beautifully set holiday dinner tables, delicious home-cooked meals, and perfectly tended gardens. Her creativity will be missed, but never far out of sight. Janet is survived by her three children, Todd R. Wagenhorst of Chesterfield, Virginia and spouse Martha, Dr. Bret Wagenhorst of Tifton, Georgia, and Amy L. Kidder of Midland, Virginia and spouse Daniel. Other surviving relatives include her six grandchildren, Erin Conner and spouse Larry, Lauren Headley and spouse M.D., Michael Wagenhorst and spouse Erika, Emmylou Kidder, Kinsey Kidder, and Patrick Kidder. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Brice Headley, Reese Headley, Tate Headley, and Todd James Conner. Additional survivors include her sister, Susan Ann Rhinehart, sister-in-law, Nancy Bouton, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Juanita Bouton, father, Monroe C. Bouton, brothers, James M. Bouton and Harry E. Bouton, and grandparents, Georgia McKee, Orville McKee, Floy and Leno James. A small private gathering of family, close friends, and neighbors will be held this spring, with a burial to follow this summer in her beloved Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Obituaries
