Tests of ‘forever chemical’ sources in the Occoquan begin Vint Hill could be among contamination sites, experts say By Hunter Savery

Fauquier Times Staff Writer

“Forever chemicals” are toxic, widespread and nearly impossible to destroy — and they’re moving from polluted sites into local waterways. Now, tests are underway which could help determine whether PFAS contamination coming from the former Army base at Vint Hill is impacting the Occoquan Reservoir, a drinking water source for 800,000 people in Northern Virginia. PFAS compounds have been found in multiple waterways in Fauquier and Prince William counties, according to data from the United States Geological Survey. South Run, Broad Run and the Occoquan Reservoir have all tested positive for PFAS. The two smaller waterways — South Run and Broad Run — are connected to tributaries that flow from

Vint Hill to the Occoquan Reservoir. Located at the border of Fauquier and Prince William counties, Vint Hill is a former U.S. Army base that’s now home to a mix of homes and businesses. For the past several years, the U.S. Department of Defense has been monitoring PFAS contamination at Vint Hill that is believed to be tied to a former burn pit where soldiers practiced putting out fires with firefighting foam containing PFAS chemicals, which then leached into the soil and the groundwater. Some of the agency’s tests have shown PFAS levels in groundwater wells at the facility as high as 1,200 parts per trillion — 300 times higher than the EPA’s proposed limit for drinking water of 4 parts per trillion. While testing has not yet tied Vint Hill PFAS contamination to the Occoquan Reservoir, a 2021 report from the Army Corps of Engineers shows that groundwater from Vint Hill flows into the Occoquan watershed.

The City of Manassas will turn the former Marsteller Middle School and its surrounding 20 acres into a new fire station, community center and park. The city announced its plans last week to purchase the property from Manassas Baptist Church, located at 8730 Sudley Road, for $9.9 million. The city has budgeted an additional $1 million for renovations to the school and park. The church will retain its main building as well as the surrounding 6 acres, according to a City of Manassas news release. “In one transaction, we were able to address multiple needs that have been identified in our community survey and long-term planning: green space/fields, an indoor community center and a location for a future fire station,” interim City

Manager Douglas Keen said in a statement. The city began discussing the plan to acquire the land and former school building last year. “The church and city worked together,” Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger said. The church “had an opportunity and were willing to sell.” “We are always mindful of what our residents’ needs are in this community, and it was time,” Davis-Younger wrote. “The city has done an amazing job and is in extremely good financial condition to allow us to fill the needs of the community and move swiftly when opportunity arises.” The city plans to turn a portion of the 20 acres into a public park that will include two baseball fields, a rectangular field, an outdoor running track and open green space for unstructured and passive recreation. Tests of ‘forever chemical’ sources in the Occoquan begin

More than just drinking water

PFAS, from page 1 “Vint Hill would be a really important question,” said Stanley Grant, director of Virginia Tech’s Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory, which, among other things, is charged with monitoring pollution in the waterway. Armed with $750,000 in new equipment, the Occoquan lab began a new effort in February to test samples from throughout the Occoquan watershed to determine where the PFAS in the reservoir is coming from. Susan Miller, a spokesperson for Fairfax Water, said that the new testing will help “provide the scientific foundation necessary to support efforts to reduce or eliminate sources of PFAS within the Occoquan watershed.” Tests conducted by Fairfax Water in September found levels of both PFOA and PFOS above the EPA’s proposed limit of 4 parts per trillion in the Occoquan watershed. Tests from the Potomac watershed have remained consistently lower, according to data provided by Fairfax Water. Grant said it’s too early to draw conclusions about the sources of contamination in the Occoquan watershed but that investigating possible sources such as Vint Hill is the right approach. PFAS chemicals, an abbreviation for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are manmade and now found across the globe in an estimated 45% of public drinking water systems, according to a recent study. The chemicals do not break down under normal environmental conditions and can remain in the soil indefinitely. They also accumulate in the human body, persist for years, and are tied to cancer and numerous other health problems. The EPA is finalizing a proposed limit on these chemicals that would reduce the permissible limit in drinking water to just 4 parts per trillion, down from the current standard of 70 parts per trillion. For reference, one part per trillion is the equivalent of one drop of water in three Olympic-sized swimming pools. Kirin Furst, an assistant professor of environmental engineering at George Mason University, is also cautious about drawing final conclusions but agreed that Vint Hill is consistent with other known contamination sites. “It seems totally reasonable that contamination is spreading from the burn pit and sludge fields,” Furst said. “PFAS is going to be mobilized; it does not stay put. We know that for a fact.” Both Grant and Furst agree that more research should be conducted at Vint Hill to determine the site’s potential risks. Vint Hill residents have continued to express concerns about the safety of their drinking water supply since the Fauquier Times first reported on the issue last summer. The area’s drinking water is provided by Buck-

Buckland has been testing Vint Hill wells for PFAS for years but did not provide the results to Vint Hill residents — or Fauquier County water officials — until after the Fauquier Times wrote about Department of Defense tests that showed some drinking water wells exceeded the EPA’s proposed new standard for PFAS levels in drinking water. The Army has been providing bottled water to four “off-post” homes since 2021 after a shared drinking water well tested above the current PFAS standard of 70 parts per trillion, according to an Army spokesperson. During a homeowner’s meeting in October, Buckland Water announced it was launching a new round of “at-the-tap” testing. But, as of this month, neither residents nor Fauquier County water officials have seen the results of those tests. Calls and emails to Buckland Water and Sanitation for comment have not been returned. Fauquier County Supervisor Ike Broaddus ordered his own round of PFAS testing at his business, Old Bust Head Brewing Company, around the same time last fall. Results from these tests show PFOA and PFOS levels hovering slightly above or below the proposed limit of 4 parts per trillion. Broaddus represents the Scott District, which includes Vint Hill, on the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors, and his brewery is also located in Vint Hill

A widespread problem

Furst noted that there are dozens of sources of PFAS contamination in Northern Virginia, including airports like Dulles International and Manassas Regional. In fact, a 2020 fire sprinkler system malfunction at Mannassas Regional Airport caused large quantities of firefighting foam to spill across the tarmac and nearby roadways. Furst identified that spill as contributing to PFAS

There are everyday causes of contamination as well. Much of Furst’s research has examined the role of septic systems in polluting local aquifers with forever chemicals. Scientists are only beginning to fully understand the scope and causes of PFAS contamination in surface and groundwater. PFAS is not only a concern for public water systems — which might have to spend millions to filter out PFAS if the proposed EPA limit is finalized — but also for private well owners. In November, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources revealed that seven out of 10 private wells in the state tested positive for at least one form of PFAS. No comparable study has been undertaken in Virginia, however, and well owners would have to pay for their own testing to determine if their water is contaminated, according to VDH. Scientific studies have tied forever chemical exposure to various forms of cancer, immune system disorders, reproductive issues and other ailments. “It’s been found to have adverse effects in every organ system in the body. Which is very concerning,” Elsie Sunderland, the Fred Kavli Professor of Environmental Chemistry at Harvard University, told the Fauquier Times. “The challenge is that not any one individual will see the outcomes but looking at the data you see a whole lot of problems,” Sunderland said. Forever chemical contamination is not only a threat to human health, but to entire ecosystems. In September, the Environmental Working Group published a peer-reviewed study revealing that more than 120 PFAS substances have been found in more than 625 different animal species. Wild Virginia, a Charlottesville-based environmental advocacy group, recently raised the alarm about potential harm to Virginia wildlife from forever chemicals. The Virginia Department of Health found PFAS in fish tissue in several areas of the commonwealth, though testing has been limited. Across the water in Maryland, state officials recently announced a new fish consumption advisory based on PFAS sampling results. The Maryland Department of the Environment recommended that consumers limit their intake of smallmouth bass, sunfish and white perch, among other species. Virginia has not issued any PFAS advisory for fish, though there are multiple local advisories related to PCB contamination. Research conducted by a former student of Furst’s found that freshwater clams in Bull Run and Fairfax’s Cub Run had accumulated high quantities of PFAS.

More teachers, staff raises boost school division spending Superintendent pitches $1.78B budget for next school year

“Investing in our students begins with investing in our workforce.”

By Jill Palermo

Times Staff Writer

The Prince William County Superintendent LaTanya McDade’s proposed $1.78 billion budget for next school year includes about 165 new teaching positions and boosts teacher and staff pay between 5% and 9%. McDade’s new spending plan boosts per-student spending to more than $16,000 — an all-time high. That amount though comes in part due to an expected dip in enrollment of about 1,400 students — from 89,660 students during the current year to a projected 88,239 next year. Still, McDade said increases in more challenging student populations, including children with disabilities and those who qualify for special education services as well as students learning English as a second language, will require larger investments. Accordingly, the school division hopes to hire an additional 125 teacher assistants serving students with special needs, 23 teacher assistants for kindergarten classes, 15.5 read-

Superintendent LaTanya McDade ing specialists, as well as provide a new stipend for case managers who oversee students’ individualized education plans. The budget reflects an increase in spending of about $137 million over last year. The bulk of the new spending — about $71 million — will go toward increasing staff pay. The budget continues a string of raises teachers have received over the past few years and includes both cost-of-living adjustments and step increases. “Investing in our students begins with investing in our workforce by delivering on the promise for region-

ally competitive pay,” McDade said. McDade and other school division officials hope to emphasize that the latest raises, if approved by the school board, would result in a 28.2% increase in average Prince William County teacher pay over the past four years. Under the new budget, starting teachers would make about $58,000 a year. The raises, however, fall short of the 17% salary hike the Prince William Education Association had asked for during its first-ever round of collective bargaining, which wrapped up in December. Maggie Hansford, president of the teachers’ union, said the group is withholding comment on the proposed raises due to a pending unfair labor practice charge the PWEA has leveled against school division negotiators. The union expects to hear the outcome of the charges in March,

she said. The budget reflects increases in funding across the board. The state is expected to direct an additional $55.6 million to the school division next school year, an increase of 7.5%, while the county is expected to kick in about $79.4 million more, an increase of 9.8%. “It’s a good budget. Generally, we’re very excited about it,” board Chairman Babur Lateef said in an interview after the Feb. 7 school board meeting. Still, Lateef noted the state is still not funding the same number of school positions they did prior to the 2008 recession and said the school board would like to raise teacher pay even more than McDade proposes but can’t afford to do so. “The hardest choice is always our inability to pay our staff what we believe is more competitive wages,” he said. “We’re trying, but we’re also competing with (surrounding Northern Virginia counties) who are already ahead of us, and they’re increasing as well. So, we’re constantly playing catch up.” The budget hearing will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the school division’s Edward L. Kelly Administration Building. Unity Reed High hosts first-ever school drone competition By Cher Muzyk

Times Staff Writer

The gymnasium at Unity Reed High School was transformed into an aerial drone field over the weekend for Prince William County schools’ first-ever “Aerial Drone Robotics Competition.” The school division and the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation teamed up to host the tournament, which was open to high school and middle school students. Student participants came from Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia to compete among a field of 24 teams. The competition involved both piloting and coding the drones. Most of the local competitors were students of Unity Reed High, Woodbridge Senior High, Unity Braxton Middle and Lake Ridge Middle schools. Students competed in four missions that tested their teamwork, piloting, programming and communication skills. One required the drone pilots to fly blind, navigating only with the help of a team member using pre-planned hand signals. After eight hours of competition, all six Lake Ridge Middle School teams qualified for the finals. But

Local breweries are getting ‘frogged.’ Here’s why. ‘They make people hoppy.’ By Cher Muzyk

Times Staff Writer

Visited a local brewery lately? If so, you might have found a tiny plastic frog hiding behind your pint of ale, under your cocktail napkin or even sitting next to a stack of brewery merch. If so, it was likely placed there by the “Brewery Frogs.” The two-member group, who asked not to be named to avoid spoiling the fun, say they’ve spent the last several weeks hiding over 600 tiny frogs at breweries in Prince William, Fauquier, Orange, Albemarle and Louisa counties. They carefully number each frog to keep track of how many they hide at each stop. The result has both confused and delighted brewery owners and patrons. Jonathan Waldron, the owner of 4J’s Farm & Brewery in Warrenton, said he first learned about the tiny frogs when a little girl approached him with a handful. “Can I have these?” she asked. “Uh, I’m not even sure,” Waldron said he responded. “I don’t even know what those are.” Upon closer inspection, Waldron noticed numbers on the frogs. The little girl told him she found them hidden around his brewery. When she asked again if she could keep them, Waldron figured, why not? “I’m not quite sure what they are, but absolutely!” he said. It was a busy Saturday at 4J’s, and Waldron said he and his staff had been feverishly pouring beer all evening. So, he didn’t think of the frogs again until he visited the restroom and saw one staring back at him. “I was using the urinal and looking straight ahead, and there’s a little frog sitting on top of the ‘Focus, Aim, Flush’ sign,” he said. “So, I giggled a little bit, and I left it there, and I went back out.” Waldron said he thought it was a “pretty cool” idea because customers had fun discovering the frogs. Later, Waldon said his wife, Jessica, told him 4J’s and a few other local breweries had been tagged on social media by a new page called “Brewery Frogs.” It said: “4J’s Farm and Brewery, you’ve been #frogged! Happy hunting and remember, it’s all for fun!” The duo behind Brewery Frogs plan to continue to secretly hide more frogs. at more breweries. “It’s a lot more fun if it’s a secret,” one told the Prince William Times.

COURTESY OF BREWERY FROGS

The Brew Republic Bierwerks in Woodbridge after a recent frogging. The idea came from the viral Instagram trend of adult children hiding ducks in their parents’ houses and the hilarity that ensues as the parents find them, the group member said. They picked tiny frogs because “beer is made from hops, and frogs hop,” the member of Brewery Frogs said. The duo first tested their idea at Iron Pipe Ale Works in Orange County and said the inaugural frogging was a success. “They loved looking for them. Some of the customers were finding them, and they made a little game out of it,” the group member said. The breweries are having fun with the frogs and think it’s toad-ally awesome, too. “The invasion of the frogs was confusing at first

but made total sense when we found out that they just wanted some good beer,” said Christopher Chardon, general manager of Silver Branch Warrenton Station. “We got to the bottom of it quickly and informed our guests (who were also confused) that they were just looking to enjoy a good hoppy beer or two.” Breweries have messaged Brewery Frogs on Facebook inviting them to “frog” their breweries. Brewery Frogs invites those who find the frogs to take pictures and tag them on Facebook. Some have pondered on social media whether the frogs are being hidden because it’s Leap Year or because of the emergence of spring peepers. To that, Brewery Frogs says: “It’s all about the hops.” Reach Cher Muzyk at cmuzyk@fauquier.com

Manassas to buy former middle school for new fire station, park site LAND SALE, from page 1 Adding the new sports fields to “help meet increasing demand and to provide fields for youth recreation leagues” is a priority, the city said in its press release. The acquisition will allow the city “to offer more recreational opportunities and more open space as our residents have requested,” Davis-Younger said. The site will also house a new fire station. The location for Fire Station 1 will be “optimal,” city officials said, because it “will reduce response times to the northern side of the city and bring public safety operations closer to UVA Health Prince William Medical Center.” “We will be able to keep everyone safer with the future relocation of

Fire Station 1,” Davis-Younger said. The fire station, a long-term capital project estimated to cost $29 million, is planned for construction in 2029, said Lisa Sievel-Otten, a City of Manassas spokesperson. The former Marsteller Middle School — named for the late Dr. Emlyn Harrison Marsteller, a country doctor and former school board member — was built in 1960. The church bought it from Prince William County Schools when it opened the current Marsteller Middle School in 2002. The city has big plans for the former school building, which it plans to develop into the city’s first community center and indoor athletic facility. “I have long been an advocate for

a community center in the city and am glad we have this unique opportunity to re-acquire a former public property in an important partnership with one of the city’s most historic churches,” Davis-Younger wrote in the press release. Because some facilities at the former Marstellar school are immediately usable, the city expects to be able to offer “limited outdoor programming” as soon as this summer. For now, the church will continue to operate its warming shelter and offer some programming during a transition period as the sale is finalized. Ultimately, the church’s essential services will relocate from the middle school building to its church building. Davis-Younger said the purchase

was made with an eye toward the future because it not only meets the present needs voiced by the community but is also an investment for “future generations” of city residents, Davis-Younger said. While the planning and design of the new park facilities are already underway, the city says it will hold community discussions and commission an analysis to determine needs and additional uses of the existing building, the release said. The city invites public comments on the project at a public hearing on the city’s budget on April 22. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

With data centers, what happens in Richmond doesn’t stay in Richmond At 5 a.m. on Jan. 31, I got on a bus in Haymarket to travel to Richmond with 40 other folks from Fauquier and nearby counties for Conservation Lobby Day to meet with members of the General Assembly to emphasize the need for data center reform. The Virginia Conservation Network organized the event, and Piedmont Environmental Council, Protect Catlett and Protect Fauquier also participated. The Piedmont Environmental Council deserves a special shout-out for its state-level data center reform efforts. First, the good news. There were 17 bills to limit the further proliferation of data centers (and transmission lines) in Northern Virginia and the harm that results. More specifically, the proposed bills would, among other things: Require the industry to locate and operate data centers more responsibly. Eliminate the many millions of

dollars in tax benefits the industry receives without any requirements to reduce energy consumption and other detrimental impacts. Encourage undergrounding of transmission lines and make the industry (not all of us) pay for the billions of dollars in electrical infrastructure it requires. This is real progress because it shows that citizen concerns are beginning to reach at least some of our legislators, including Sen. Russet Perry and Del. Michael Webert. Both sponsored data center reform bills and represent significant parts of Fauquier County. Now, the bad news. Most of these bills have been tabled until a “study” is done later this year — or killed outright. As I explained to legislators with whom I met, action is needed now. Data center problems will only get worse with delays, as the industry attempts to get as many facilities approved as possible before new legislation

With thanks for critical information about data centers in Prince William Just want to express my appreciation for the article Peter Cary wrote that includes the map and numbers for Prince William data centers. I have always believed this was critical information that was hard for the public to get and understand, and this article was very clear. The article has been linked by several posters on Western PW Chatter. I posted it on NextDoor yesterday, with the text below, and according to the stats on the post, it was viewed 5,900 times in just one day. This is the post:

“This post is dedicated to the people of NextDoor who have been reading data center posts trying to figure out if the people voicing concern about the transformation of (Prince William County) into a data center city are exaggerating. Investigative reporter Peter Cary from the PW Times has dug deep and put it all together. ... It is why we as a community must subscribe to local media like PW Times — The Washington Post has not covered this story ALLY STOEGER Gainesville

could slow the onslaught or put restrictions on the industry. The current legislative activities in Richmond of interest to Fauquier residents go beyond data centers. For example, there were proposed bills that would usurp the authority of local authorities to make decisions regarding the approval of utility-scale solar facilities and transfer that authority to a state agency. And there was another bill, HB 1459, that would allow town and county governments to change zoning and grant permits with little or no public notice, involvement or recourse. This particular bill strikes very close to home because it contained additional language that is contrary to a recent favorable court ruling in Citizens for Fauquier County’s litigation to overturn the permit granted to Amazon to build a data center in Warrenton. Fortunately, this bill did not move forward because of a large

outpouring of opposition from citizens groups and individuals. What is becoming increasingly clear to me is that the more of us who pay close attention to what is happening in Richmond, the more we will be able to influence decisions there that will truly affect our lives, our environment and our pocketbooks. The fate of HB 1459 is a perfect example. We are up against very formidable special interests, including the data center and electric power industries, with incredible wealth and influence. It is our responsibility to stay informed, work to influence legislation through our elected representatives and hold them accountable for protecting the public interest. KEVIN RAMUNDO President, Citizens for Fauquier County Upperville

Adam Beard, a Prince William County police spokesperson. The area is near the NOVEC building, just west of the intersection of Min-

nieville Road and Cardinal Drive. Police said Carla Andrea Mejia, 27, of Woodbridge had been struck by a car and was pronounced dead at the scene, Beard said in a news release. Mejia was wearing dark clothing and was walking in the westbound lane of Minnieville Road when she was struck, although it’s not known exactly when, Beard said. The vehicle involved in the crash was believed to be a Hyundai, but it’s not clear what model. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police at 703-792-6500 or submit a tip online at pwcva.gov/policetip.

Police: Man accused of raping his Dale City housemate at knifepoint arrested in New Jersey A man accused of raping his Dale City housemate at knifepoint on Monday has been arrested and jailed in New Jersey, according to Prince William County police. Officers were called to a Dale City area home at 7:50 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, after a woman reported that she woke to a man armed with a knife entering her room. She said the man sexually assaulted her before she managed to get away from him and escape. A neighbor helped her call police, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County police spokeswoman.

Police determined that the man was renting the basement of the home where the victim lived, but the two did not know each other, Carr said. The man fled in a black Dodge Caravan with New Jersey license plates. Police announced at about 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, that the man had been arrested in North Plainfield Borough, New Jersey. Alexander Maximiliano Soto Hernandez, 42, of Dale City, was arrested and charged with multiple felonies in connection with the incident, Carr said.

SETON SCHOOL HOOPS TEAMS WIN STATE TOURNEY OPENERS

The Seton School boys and girls basketball teams both won VISAA Division II first round games Tuesday. Led by Dominic Nguyen’s 34 points, the Conquistadors (26-2) beat North Cross 84-59. The Seton girls (21-5) eliminated Foxcroft 50-22 as Lucy Pennefather scored 16 and Lilly Vande Woude had 12.

‘We studied a lot of film on Oakton’ Osbourn Park girls hoops dismantle Cougars, 67-32, in state quarterfinals By Matthew Proctor Times Staff Writer

They say defense wins championships, and there might not be a stingier unit around than the Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets. Oakton saw how tightly the Yellow Jackets guard you in Tuesday’s Class 6 girls basketball quarterfinal. Osbourn Park (24-3) led 36-11 halftime in rolling to a 67-32 no-doubt victory that advanced OP to the state semifinals for the third time in four years. “I don’t think that score is indicative of how good Oakton was. They made us work through every possession defensively,” coach Chrissy Kelly said. Playing a tight man defense that switches on everything on the perimeter, OP’s collective athleticism and discipline allows them to cut off driving lanes, deflect passes, generate turnovers and keep their opponent off the scoreboard. “We studied a lot of film on Oakton, and they don’t stop moving. They never run out of energy. They’re so good at turning the corner and getting downhill with their dribble handoff actions. We had to switch. We had to be in position to take away those open lanes,” said Kelly. See OSBOURN PARK, page 10

Sophomore Keyarah Rainey and the Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets advanced to the Class 6 semifinals for the third time in four years following their 67-32 win over Oakton on Tuesday.

Patriot boys stay calm, eliminate Madison 55-42 under the pressure of it, were strong with the ball and made foul shots down the stretch,” said Rivers. “Our guys did a good job stepping up to the plate and being able to handle business even though they’re the hunted.” Patriot led 36-22 at halftime and 45-26 a few minutes into the third, but Potomac outscored Patriot 15-4 over the final minutes of the quarter to enter the fourth down 49-41, then closed to 51-49. But Halim slammed home a breakaway dunk, then hit back-toback 3-pointers from the left wing to sprout the lead to 61-52 and steal all momentum with just over three minutes to play.

Pioneers next face Oscar Smith Friday in state semis rematch By Peter Brewington and Matthew Proctor Times Staff Writers

Coming from behind or leading from the outset, the Patriot High boys basketball team keeps winning in the postseason. One year after reaching the Class 6 championship game, the Pioneers are on a similar path after using a strong second half to eliminate visiting Madison 55-42 Tuesday in the quarterfinals. Tey Barbour scored 18 points as Patriot recovered from a 12-point first half deficit to close the game on a 31-13 run. Next up for Patriot (23-4) is Oscar Smith (23-3) in a rematch of last year’s state semi, which the Pioneers won 47-39. The game is at 7:30 p.m. at Hylton. The other semifinal has defending champion Hayfield facing South Lakes (Reston), which downed Potomac 74-69 on Tuesday. The Class 6 state final is Saturday, March 9 at 1 p.m. in Richmond’s Siegel Center. Tuesday’s win saw Patriot dig deep as Madison’s zone restricted the Pioneers’ ability to play in the open court. The Pioneers used the home crowd to never lose confidence and

Abe Halim scored 10 points and Isaiah Vick nine as Patriot moved on. The win was a lot different than the Class 3 Region B final on Feb. 2. Leading host Potomac by 19 points halfway through the third quarter, Patriot saw a 45-26 lead shrink to 51-49 a minute into the fourth following an electrifying Potomac run led by high-flying point guard Kenny DeGuzman. But the battle-tested Pioneers nev-

er wavered in posting a 71-60 win for their third straight region crown. “We’re not going to blow out good teams. It looked like we were, but we knew they were going to go on a run at some point,” Patriot coach Sherman Rivers said. The Pioneers used a pair of clutch 3-pointers by forward Halim and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth to close out Potomac. “Our guys held serve, didn’t fold

This is Patriot’s third straight trip to the state tournament. They reached the semifinals for the first time in school history in 2022, then advanced to the state final in 2023, losing to Hayfield 52-41. Patriot is riding a 14-game winning streak and posted defining wins throughout the regular season, including an 83-72 victory over South Lakes on Dec. 19 and a 50-48 win over Hayfield on Jan. 31. Rivers is excited as Patriot tests itself against the state’s best, looking for their first title. “Everything that we’ve been working on and doing has prepared us for this moment, so it’s not something that’s too big for us,” said Rivers.

OP roars into state semis led by Rainey, Snead, Brown

She led the Yellow Jackets with 19 points. “Once I get a couple down, I just stay with what I’ve been doing,” said Snead. “It’s the first one going in, and also mentally knowing that that’s what I work on. Before the game, I have workouts in the morning and that helps me. I do game-like shots, so when I’m shooting them in the game, it’s like I’ve already done this.” Osbourn Park led 17-7 after the first quarter before outscoring the Cougars 19-4 in the second in bolting to their 36-11 halftime cushion. The margin was 58-24 to end the third and Kelly subbed freely in the fourth quarter.

OSBOURN PARK, from page 9 OP point guard Samia Snead said the Yellow Jackets extensively scouted Oakton, which finished 23-7. “We learned everyone’s tendencies, so we already knew what we were coming into. We knew they liked to fake the handoff or actually do the handoff, so we switch and push up on them. We executed what we did in practice,” said Snead, an all-Class 6 Region B first team selection. The anchor of the Yellow Jackets’ defense is forward Keyarah Rainey, a 5-foot-8 sophomore who always has her nose around the basketball, collecting steals and starting fast break scoring opportunities. Rainey was named the Class 6 Region B Player of the Year. Kelly had high praise for Rainey, comparing her to Forest Park legend Monica Wright. Wright led the Bruins to two state titles under Kelly in the early 2000’s before playing at the University of Virginia and being selected second overall by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2010 WNBA draft. “She is the Monica Wright of this decade. (Wright) was an elite defender for me at Forest Park, and Keyarah is growing into what Monica Wright did for us,” Kelly said. Playing against an undersized Oakton lineup, 6-1 junior forward Alex Brown was dominant, blocking shot after shot. Getting to the rim became near impossible when Brown was on the floor. While the Cougars struggled to get into a rhythm offensively, Samia Snead and the Yellow Jackets had no problem finding the bottom of the net. Draining 3-pointers for OP’s first two baskets of the game, Snead made it rain early and often, hitting five threes in the first half and six overall.

To earn a home state game, Osbourn Park beat Gainesville 62-60 in the Class 6 Region B final on Saturday to win their fourth straight region title. Two weeks before, the Yellow Jackets beat Gainesville 69-30 on Feb. 9 in the Cedar Run District final to claim their fourth district crown in a row. Gainesville fell to Centreville 64-52 in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday. In the semifinals, Osbourn Park will battle Thomas Dale (23-1) at Hylton High at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Centreville (23-3) will face Manchester (25-2) in the other semifinal. The Class 6 state final is Saturday, March 9 at 11 a.m. in Richmond’s Siegel Center. Thomas Dale dismantled Osbourn Park 81-40 on Jan. 13 in what is the Yellow Jackets’ last loss. Since falling to Thomas Dale, OP has won 13 in a row. “They’re super talented. They’re well coached. It’s about preparation, going back and watching film and making sure when we’re in-game that we’re able to manage any runs that happen, momentum shifts and just being able to stay in the moment, stay composed and focus on one play at a time,” Kelly said. “That 41-point loss, it stuck with us heavy. It’s time to get our get back,” said Snead.

Going away? Protect your home while you’re gone. By Carmen Rivera

State Farm Insurance

You’ve booked your trip and packed your suitcase. But before you depart, take the time to vacation-proof your home. Whether you take a weekend getaway or a longer trip, consider taking extra security and home protection measures. Consider the following checklist:

Inside the house

Install or set timers on interior lights. Giving the impression that someone is home can help in deterring burglars, who often look for crimes of opportunity. Protect against power surges. You never know when a power surge may occur, so it’s good to be prepared. Consider unplugging the coffee maker, computer, TV, stereo and other electronics or see that they are plugged safely into a surge protector. Test the smoke alarms. See that all alarms are in working order and replace any batteries. Don’t broadcast your plans on social media. Even if you think that it’s only your friends or colleagues viewing your online profiles, it’s safest not to leave any sort of opening for a possible burglar. Alert the alarm company. If you have an automatic security system in place, you might want to call your representative to let them know you’ll be away from home for an ex-

tended time. Check that the alarm is set properly when you leave. You might also consider using remote monitoring with your smartphone or a video doorbell for some added protection. Secure your valuables. If you don’t already have your jewelry or other valuables in a secure space such as a home safe, now might be the time to do so. If you leave valuables out in plain sight, a burglar might be able to see them from a window. Set the HVAC. Set a programmable thermostat to lower your heat or air conditioning usage and remember to change the thermostat’s battery. Protect your pipes. Check that pipes in vulnerable areas such as attics, basements and crawlspaces are insulated. In unusually cold weather, consider setting your thermostat at 55 degrees or above. Ask a neighbor or friend to stop by and check on the house and periodically turn on the faucets to help ensure the pipes don’t freeze. Check doors and windows. Before you leave your home, see that all windows and doors are locked. Consider a house sitter. If you have the option, a house sitter can help look after your home while you are away. This could also come in handy if you have pets that need to be watched.

Outside the house

Arrange for lawn care. Think about having your landscaping tended to by a friendly neighbor or local service. Prune any risky branches. Before you leave, trim any tree branches that might allow access to a climbing burglar or that may cause damage during a storm. Stop newspapers and mail. Consider requesting a U.S. Postal Service hold mail service for your mail and newspaper deliveries or have them regularly picked up by a neighbor. Again, you don’t want to easily clue in a burglar to your absence by the mounting newspapers on your doorstep. Park a vehicle in the driveway. Keeping an extra vehicle in the driveway or asking a neighbor to park their vehicle might help deter potential burglars. Put away potential wind-borne objects. If you live in a region that experiences severe weather, you may want to secure objects such as patio furniture, grills or trash cans.

Check your exterior lighting. Utilize motion sensor detector lights or install or set timers on outdoor security lights. Don’t leave spare keys outdoors. Collect any hidden spare keys from around the exterior of your home. Remember, many burglars know about popular hiding places, like beneath mats and in potted plants. Lock the garage and any fencing. Even if there is no entrance to your house from the garage or fencing, there’s still a chance for things to be stolen. Secure all doors and any entrances. Make sure you have the appropriate amount of home insurance for your needs and contact an agent if you have any questions.
