HEALTH

get in the ZZZ Zone You’re not alone if you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night, unable to go back to sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation is bad for your health and can put you at higher risk for heart disease, diabetes and dementia.

“Sleep affects almost every tissue in our bodies,” says Gregory Banks, M.D., a primary care physician at Tennova Family Medicine - Tiny Town. “It affects growth and stress hormones, our immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure and cardiovascular health. Research shows that lack of sleep increases the risk for obesity, heart disease and infections.”

HERE ARE FIVE ROUTINES TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP, STARTING TONIGHT: Schedule your sleep. Adults should sleep seven hours per night. To establish a schedule, go to sleep and wake up at the same time every morning—even on weekends and during vacations. Consider using sleep apps, smartwatches, or under-the-mattress technology to track everything from sleep stages to snoring. It could be an excellent way to see which nighttime habits work best for you.

Establish beverage cut-off times.

Though you might be dragging, put down the coffee mug at least six hours before bed. Your circadian rhythm will thank you. This is because half the caffeine in that 2 p.m. cup of coffee could still be present in your bloodstream by 7 p.m. And though it may seem like a stress-reliever, alcohol can repress REM sleep. If you indulge in a nightcap, make sure the cut-off time is three to four hours before bedtime.

Establish good exercise habits. At least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise leads to better sleep, although it is best to do it earlier in the day and not too close to bedtime. Not only can exercise reduce insomnia and sleep apnea over time, but it also starts a positive body cycle. Sleeping well at night means you are wellrested the next day and have the energy to exercise again.

Make your bedroom relaxing. Good rest might require an investment in your environment. Consider buying a comfortable mattress to reduce back and leg pain. Beyond the bed, your room should be dark, decorated in a soothing color palette and free of clutter. In addition, make sure to set your thermostat between 60 and 72 degrees, as hot rooms can sometimes cause poor sleep. Some claim the magic number is 65. Drown out disruptive sounds with a white noise machine or app.

Put down the electronics. It is tempting to scroll social media once your kids are in bed or the workday is over, but cell phones, tablets and televisions could be keeping you awake. Electronics stimulate the brain with color, movement and melatonin-suppressing blue light. If you use devices at night, consider using night mode (red or yellow light) or blue light blocking glasses. Stop using technology at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Some healthcare providers suggest screen-free bedrooms, but if your phone doubles as your alarm clock, place your phone in “do not disturb” mode, so notifications do not interrupt your sleep cycle before morning.

She has been featured on shows as varied as Sesame Street and CBS 60 Minutes. She has performed at events ranging from a memorial service for victims of 9/11 at the Washington National Cathedral, to singing at the US Capitol on September 25, 2020 as her friend Ruth Bader Ginsburg's casket was lying in state. Ginsburg was a devoted fan of opera. In 2014, a recording of We Shall Overcome arranged by composer Nolan Williams, Jr. and featuring Graves was among several works of art, including the poem A Brave and Startling Truth by Maya Angelou, sent to space on the first test flight of the spacecraft Orion. According to her website, Denyce Graves is a native of Washington, D.C., where she attended the Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts. She continued her education at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory. In 1998, Graves received an honorary doctorate from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music. of Glamour Magazine’s 1997 “Women of the Year.” In 1999 WQXR Radio in New York named her as one of classical music’s “Standard Bearers for the 21st Century.” Denyce Graves has been invited on several occasions to perform in recital at the White House, and she provides many benefit performances for various causes special to her throughout each season. Denyce Graves has been the recipient of many awards, including the Grand Prix du Concours International de Chant de Paris, the Eleanor Steber Music Award in the Opera Columbus Vocal Competition, and a Jacobson Study Grant from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation. In 1991, she received the Grand Prix Lyrique, awarded once every three years by the Association des amis de l’opéra de Monte-Carlo, and the Marian Anderson Award, presented to her by Miss Anderson. In addition Graves has received honorary doctorates from Oberlin College, College of Saint Mary and Centre College.

On January 30, 2022 at 3PM the Clarksville Community Concert Association will host Denyce Graves in the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall at Austin Peay State University. Making Magic Memories Since 1858

&

By Paige Eisemann

B

uilt in 1858, the Smith Trahern Mansion stands high above the Cumberland River. Built in 1858 by wealthy tobacconist Christopher Smith, this majestic antebellum home overlooks the Cumberland River. Constructed during the troubled pre-Civil War era, the architecture reflects Greek Revival and Italianate styles. The home boasts grand hallways, jib windows, an exquisite curved staircase and a widow's walk on the roof. In 1998, the mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home makes a beautiful setting for weddings, wedding photography and receptions. It's also available for other private event rentals.

The first time.many Clarksvillians visited the mansion, however, was a visit to the annual Trees of Christmas Open House, hosted by FCE (Family and Community Education) in cooperation with the City of Clarksville. The event always drew crowds, eager to view over 20 elaborately decorated Christmas trees donated by local businesses and organizations. The home at 101 McClure Street is well remembered for elaborate holiday displays. Many people remember the magical experience of viewing the trees and displays against the backdrop of the historic home. The event showcased the beauty of the season as well as the beauty of the architecture in a unique way that was enjoyed by all ages. One lifelong resident shared that she vividly remembered the first time she took her young daughter to view the displays, and her wideeyed child exclaimed “It’s Christmas in a real castle!” The mansion hasn’t always been the property of the city of Clarksville however. The Smith family

18

Clarksville Living

were its first inhabitants. History tells us that Christopher Smith passed away far downriver from his Clarksville home. Unfortunately, the vessel tasked with returning his body home exploded and he was lost to the current of the Cumberland River. Legend has it that people report seeing the ghost of his widow Lucy, pacing on the widow's walk, waiting for her husband’s return. Lucy Smith died in 1905, and her grandson C. Lacy Lockert, Jr. became the home’s owner. He sold it in 1919, but not much is known about the home until it was sold to the Trahern family in 1947. At that point, the home

was falling into disrepair and they restored it to its former glory. The Russel Rives family was the last to own and live in the home before the mansion was sold to the city. Now the home is overseen by Family and Community Educators; a group of women volunteers who manage the upkeep and restoration of the property. It is this dedicated group of volunteers who hosted the traditional Festival of Trees at the mansion each year. Photos courtesy of the Montgomery County Archives.

Exploring the Montgomery County Archives yields several historic photos of Christmas at the mansion, including the Trahern family celebrating the holiday in the home they lovingly restored. The hard work of countless volunteers in creating beautiful trees year after year for the public to enjoy can be found, preserved in photographs. The beautiful mansion is not only a part of Clarksville history, but also a big part of many Clarksville Christmas memories as well.

n the tiny carriage house that sits next to the Smith-Trahern Mansion in historic downtown Clarksville, Bella's Closet has opened. Bella's Closet is a non-profit organization with the purpose of helping women in the community who need clothing, shoes, purses and other items for interviews and the first weeks of employment.

Women are provided a private shopping experience to obtain work-appropriate clothing and other items, including new under garments, and, it's all free of charge.

Article & photos by By Tony Centonze Closet's creation. “When I was younger, I worked in corporate America, where you really had to dress a certain way,” Watson said. “I didn't have the money to buy all the really good stuff, so I bought what I could. I bought what was on sale. Over the years, I never forgot that. Now, we have an opportunity to do something for everyone out there, and I know how much a place like this would have helped me.” Pitts and the others began by searching for a location. At the same time, they were reaching out to organizations with whom they could partner, as well as potential donors. “When we first started, we contacted all the

organizations we thought we could partner with, and we asked the question, how many women at some point in their life needed help like this,” Pitts said. “We found that the majority of us, at some point, needed some sort of assistance. It was mindboggling to me to see all those hands go up. “This is not just for women who are starting a job, it's for women who are working every day, taking care of their families, putting food on the table, clothing their children, and putting themselves last in line. That's what Bella's is for, to help those women.” Watson says they Continued on page 24

Carolyn Watson, Clarksville First Lady Cynthia Pitts, Faye Forsythe, Heather Fleming and others have spent about a year bringing Watson's idea for Bella's Closet to life. Pitts and Watson explained how this all came about. “Two years ago, Carolyn and I realized the need to help struggling women dress appropriately for interviews, and then have enough clothing to get through those first weeks of employment,” Pitts said. “We asked God to guide us through this process, and so we began. We now have a board of dedicated women ready to help with clothing, hair and makeup, financial planning, etc.” For Watson, memories of her own struggles as a young woman lie at the heart of Bella's

Bella's Closet; located at 101 McClure St. in Clarksville opened the doors in September. It took them about a month to get set up once the location had been secured. “But, it took us a year to find a place,” Watson said. “We kept reaching out to different organizations. It was a blessing when the women at Trahern Mansion gave us this opportunity, here at the carriage house.”

"I had a woman who came in wearing a size-9 shoe. The only shoes she owned were a $9 pair from Walmart. She left here with three pairs of shoes, and she was just in tears.”

But, when they heard about us, they knew, if they brought that clothing here, it would go to a purpose, And, in just two months, they're already outgrowing and that their loved-ones would be happy that their the space. As word spreads about the work that Bella's Closet is doing, more and more people are getting involved, and in a variety of ways. While we sat with the ladies to talk about all that is happening, Elaina Russell, Jessica Dalimonte and Crystal Hambrock with the APSU College of Business came in to check out Bella's Closet for the first time. Russell said, their hope is to start making contributions and donations to the non-profit, as well as offering some of their time. Their goal is to

eventually refer APSU students to Bella's Closet. At the same time, CMC School Board Member Carol Berry came through the door with a suitcase full of items, and a promise to bring more. Donations have been pouring in, all types of items, shoes, purses, coats, toiletries and more. And, in all sizes, from small to 4X. “To those who are in need of these items, we're just trying to get the word out, we're here, ready and waiting,” Watson said. Pitts went on to talk about her hope that Bella's Closet will be able to partner with other non-profits and local ministries, moving forward. “We are going to partner with Judy's Hope (a tiny homes ministry that will help women get back on their feet),” Pitts said. “Bella's Closet will be able to help them and others like them in their mission(s). “We've already helped women from the SafeHouse. We were also able to help some women who moved here from California and didn't have any warm clothing. Now, they have what they need.” There are other places where women can find items that they need, but Bella's Closet organizers want it to feel like a boutique experience. They want it to feel like you're going to the mall to shop. Thus, providing them with items they need, in a thoughtful way. “It's interesting,” Watson said. “We'll watch them come in. They'll pick one or two items and then stand there, like they don't know if it's okay to get more. So, Faye will go help them, and in the end they leave with a two or three bags full of items..”

Faye Forsythe is able to spend a lot of her time at Bella's Closet. She has already helped many. “It's an amazing feeling,” Forsythe said. “When these women leave, sometimes I have to sit down and cry. It's a blessing to know that we've helped someone pull several things together, things they really needed. I had a woman who came in wearing a size-9 shoe. The only shoes she owned were a $9 pair from Walmart. She left here with three pairs of shoes, and she was just in tears.”

“We're happy to give them all they want to take,” Watson said. “They need more than just a couple of things. They can't do laundry every day.” Bella's Closet is located at 101 McClure Street.
