REPORT OF GIVING 2022/2023

Message from the CEO Thank you for making Tanglin a philanthropic priority and this report celebrates the many people in our community who want to make a difference, pay it forward and help us go over and beyond our curriculum. As a not-for-profit school, we believe that education happens best in a relationship and the Foundation is no exception. This is the Foundation’s 12th year and just as our children grow up, but remain an important part of ourselves, the Foundation remains an important part of the School. With your support, our focus remains on enabling the exceptional and extraordinary, and going beyond what fees allow. We remain committed to ensuring high levels of governance, oversight, and reporting. We will remain true to our non-profit charitable status and we will continue to focus on generations of excellence. We are grateful for your support in 2022-23 and your donations have made an impact, transformed young lives and shaped the institution for the future. Craig Considine

Message from the Development Director & Head of Foundation This report reflects our community’s culture of giving and celebrates our past. As we acknowledge the impact you’ve made this past year, we are committed to pursuing even greater achievements with our Foundation in the days ahead. I hope you like the updated Foundation logo, which is now more aligned with the school’s identity. We are also excited to present the new Foundation Honour Board, a tribute to our community’s collective philanthropic contributions, and look forward to filling it with more names. We are committed to boosting our fundraising efforts and dedicating more resources to exceptional initiatives. Our Annual Appeal and Giving Days will continue to highlight active participation, a spirit of generosity and fostering deeper collaborations within our community. Thank you for your support! Abhra Bhattacharjee

Message from the Director of Learning The Foundation was established in 2012, to support Tanglin’s mission and provide exceptional educational opportunities beyond the curriculum. In the last 12 years the Foundation has granted nearly $2M, impacted thousands of lives and been recognised by the Singapore Government with a Charity Transparency Award. As a non-profit school, our focus for the Foundation has been on raising awareness, broadening impact, and making a difference. This has been especially true in the four specific areas that the Foundation funds. These are Arts, Sport, Global Engagement and Innovation, Imagination and Inquiry. Teachers and students can apply for funding to support projects over and above the curriculum. Projects are assessed collaboratively to drive eight learning outcomes. Thank you for the part that you play in creating this supportive environment for learning – it is a wonderful place to be! John Ridley

Global Issues

TOYBOX, INFANT SCHOOL

The Amazing ToyBox is a local children's production company that has a tradition of providing our Infant children with an interactive performance experience. Age-appropriate storytelling is interweaved through performances, songs and costumes. Infant children danced, sang, and listened to music as they interacted with stories from across the world, while also celebrating the festival of Christmas.

Innovation, Imagination & Inquiry

ACROSS ASIA YOUTH FILM FESTIVAL

The 2023 Across Asia Youth Film Festival was a great success with 150 film submissions from 10 countries in nine categories, spanning ages 10-18. Tanglin Trust School students were nominated in five categories. Judges from Disney and MediaCorp, along with hosts Kate Burton and Year 12 student Bailey Benitez, presided over the Gala Awards Event on May 11, which was live-streamed globally. We welcomed students from schools across Singapore and Southeast Asia, with prize winners from China, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia attending.

Arts

BOTANIC BEATS

After a five-year hiatus, it was a delight to showcase our talented students at Botanic Beats. It not only provided students with stage exposure before a live audience, it also fostered commitment, performance excellence, confidence and instilled lifelong skills in collaboration and teamwork. The students’ dedicated efforts paid off, as they impressed the audience with their exceptional talents.

Sport Arts

IAN MURPHY

Tanglin's enrichment programmes offer a variety of opportunities, including external artist workshops in the Senior Art department. We collaborate with local and international artists such as UKbased Ian Murphy, renowned for his atmospheric architectural art. Ian's workshops captivated students by emphasising the importance of artistic intention. He worked with Year 10 Art and Graphics students, leading them in creating impressive large-scale tonal drawings with graphite powder.

HARROW BANGKOK INTERNATIONAL 7S 90 students from Year 5 to 13 participated in the Harrow Bangkok International 7s - an overseas football tournament. Despite the blistering heat, our students displayed commitment and camaraderie, competing fiercely over two days. With seven of eight teams winning medals, the trip was a huge success, and we congratulate all students for their achievements.

Innovation, Imagination & Inquiry

SAMMIE BUZZARD

Dr Sammie Buzzard, a Cardiff University climate science lecturer, visited Tanglin to deliver inspiring talks to students from Year 5 to 12. She discussed how her math background led her to the Arctic glaciers and how it aids in understanding Earth’s coldest regions, using simulations and graphs to predict ice shelf vulnerabilities and their impact on surface water hydrology - a captivating session indeed.

Arts

PAUL PHOENIX, INFANT AND YEAR 12

Paul Phoenix, two-time Grammy Award winner, member of King’s Singers and a vocal coach, conducted choral training with our Infant children and Year 12 students. His visit was incredibly inspiring, as he gave real insight and advice to improve individual techniques, sound quality and performances, benefitting both students and staff.

Innovation, Imagination & Inquiry

DAVID FAULKNER

Students, parents, as well as faculty members from Tanglin and other schools met David Faulkner, MBE OLY, to discuss supporting children's sports aspirations, athlete development, DEI, and Wellbeing in Sport. David, an experienced professional in highperformance team management, shared his Olympic insights with Junior and Middle School students, emphasising teamwork and personal best. He also led sessions on leadership best practices for the Head team and select Sixth Form students, sparking engaging discussions and questions.
